Delivering Music For Film, TV and Games
ATCs Providing Honesty to John Rodd's Studio, Clearstory Sound

Renowned music engineer John Rodd works on a wide variety of projects from blockbuster movies to television (Breaking Bad) and video games (World of Warcraft, Overwatch, EA Star Wars: Battlefront, Call of Duty: Black Ops II).
Rodd's versatility as an engineer is showcased on a diverse range of projects, including huge orchestral scores, rock, electronica, jazz, and classical. His recent work includes the score albums for Better Call Saul and Marvel's Jessica Jones, and the chart-topping #1 classical album Stars Are Rising for soprano Joanna Forest.
Rodd had to bring all of his skills to bear, along with the fatigue-free and translation-assured performance of his LCR set of ATC SCM150ASL three-way monitors, to mix composer Michael Abels' eclectic film score for the hit social thriller Get Out and composer Penka Kouneva's inspiring score for NASA's unique Heroes and Legends 4-D experience at the Kennedy Space Center.
Working with Abels was a great experience for Rodd. He noted that "Michael's score covered a ton of ground - live orchestra, Swahili group vocals, diverse percussion, solo cello, harp, and unique synth sounds. It's really far from a traditional thriller score, and Michael deserves all the praise he's received for writing something that works so well with the movie." But working with a new film director meant working within budgetary constraints. This meant a very tight schedule to mix the movie's 45 eclectic score cues. Rodd had to deliver ten separate 5.1 score stem mixes, the full 5.1 score mix, and a stereo fold-down for the soundtrack album, thus delivering a 68 audio track wide score mix for every piece of music!
"I've had the privilege of recording and mixing music all over the world at some of the greatest studios on their high-end monitoring systems," Rodd said. "Given that perspective, I'm grateful to have the brutal honesty of the ATC monitors at my own studio, Clearstory Sound. They have tremendous definition and clarity across the entire range, and they really allow me to hear what's going on so that I can make sure no elements are masking other important elements. My goal is to give each instrument its own sonic space in terms of frequency, panning, fader moves, and overall placement, while having them all work together at the same time. If something is harsh or woofy or boxy, I know it right away. I'm not second-guessing, ever. The ATCs allow me to work very quickly and confidently, which was a huge asset given the time constraints for Get Out.
Those long days held the potential for ear fatigue, but Rodd claims the ATCs protect him from that pitfall as well: "It seems like a lot of other loudspeaker manufacturers turn up the brightness to give you detail, and I think that can get fatiguing. The ATCs, however, give me tons of detail without the top-end hype, which allows me to put in really long days of consistently solid work." When mixing 5.1, Rodd uses his three ATC SCM150ASLs for a left-center-right system together with a revolving cast of surround speakers depending on the nature of the project.
Rodd's other recent project, Penka Kouneva's score for the Heroes and Legends 4-D experience at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, offered up a different sort of challenge than the traditional film score. The experience takes visitors through the history of the space program in a way that captures and conveys the excitement and emotion of that history. In addition to the immersive visuals on giant, curved screens and audio that can literally shake visitors to their core, the experience includes holograms, wind effects, scent effects, and other surprising 4-D elements spread across numerous theaters.
For Rodd, "It was a very complex mix due to the elaborate nature of Penka's awesome hybrid score. It used a massive live orchestra along with many live solos, tons of synths, guitars, percussion, pads, arpeggiators, drums, and sub-bass musical effects. She really captured the spirit of the experience and gave it a timeless yet modern theatrical feel. I leaned heavily on my ATCs to let me know when things were right. I knew that if my mix sounded fantastic on the ATCs, it would sound the same in NASA's theaters."

Switching the Drawmer MPA-90 from stereo to mono bridged is easily accomplished with the flick of a switch and use of the mono loudspeaker jack. Its inputs are either balanced XLR or unbalanced phono to cover the two universes of gear, pro versus semi-pro/consumer that may feed it. It features thermal, overload, and power-up/power-down protection and front-panel standby, fault, and clip indicator LEDs. of the Civil Rights Movement. A Notoriously Ku Klux Klan-friendly re-imagining of history, Griffith's motion picture unleashes a conflict that still rages today about race relations, representation, and the power of Hollywood. The New Rock Stars: Comedians!
Stephen Colbert (averages 2.77 million total viewers), Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Stewart, Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon... they're all trying to out do one another making America laugh again, at politics! And if ratings are any indication, they're the new Rock Stars with enough consumer eyeballs and ears. "I would say it is an honor to be here, but that would be an alternative fact," said Hasan Minhaj of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," at this year's
White House Correspondents' Dinner.
SNL viewership for the season to date is up 19% in adults 18-49 (3.5 vs. 2.9 rating) and up 22% in total viewers (10.6 million vs. 8.7 million) over the comparable period in the 2015-16 season. This marks the show's strongest ratings performance in 22 years, since the 1994-95 season, according to NBC. Who hasn't seen Alec Baldwin as the Commander-in-Chief or McCarthy's brilliant work as Spicer? Then there's the brilliant Kate McKinnon who easily moves from her impersonation of Justin Bieber, Kellyane Conway to Hillary Clinton (watch Kate singing Hallelujah sporting 10 million views).
The musical heroes of Generation X didn't have to be political until now. Where Bob Dylan raged against "masters of war" in the 1960s and the racism of the US legal system in the mid-1970s protest song "Hurricane", Kurt Cobain generally explored an inner world where "it's fun to lose and pretend." "I don't care who gets elected," sang the Replacements' Paul Westerberg in the late-1980s blues song "Election Day", most likely reflecting on the choice between the hawkish George H W Bush and the decidedly liberal Michael Dukakis - candidates who offered significantly different conceptions of what kind of country America should be. But would Westerberg have tossed out such a line if faced with the choice between Clinton and Trump? Do artists have the pulse of the public today? How are they connecting to their fans? One thing is for sure. Comedians do and they're enjoying a growing fan base. The music vacuum is about to be filled with a new wave of musicians and bands. We're listening!
Jay Z's VC Arrive!
A press release from parent company Roc Nation made it official this month on Jay Z's New Venture Capitol firm, Arrive.
Roc Nation, a full-service entertainment company founded by Shawn "JAY Z" Carter, announced an innovative new platform, ARRIVE, that will partner with a select group of early stage start-ups by providing them with brand services, business development, advisory and capital to drive growth in their organizations. "ARRIVE was created to leverage our experience and resources in building brands, developing consumer facing businesses, managing artists and representing athletes. We've opened that diversified, global range of expertise to a new vertical: entrepreneurs and their early stage businesses" said Neil Sirni, Head of New Ventures at Roc Nation.
The rapper-entrepreneur is an investor in Stance and Uber, among other startups, but now he's formalizing his investor efforts: Roc Nation
. Carter has firsthand experience growing a tech startup: He launched music streaming service Tidal in 2015 after buying Swedish tech company Aspiro. In January, Sprint bought 33% of the company for $200 million.
Arrive will pour capital into young startups, as well as advise them on brand and business development. (Perhaps it will use JetSmarter, another Carter-backed startup,
as a case study in how not to pitch the press.)

Malibu Guitar Festival Raising Wave of Fun, Fund & Friends
2017 Malibu Guitar Festival kicked-off its 3rd Annual event with a stellar music line-up during the week of May 18-21 presented by D'Angelico Guitars. studioexpresso was among the media sponsors.
The brainchild of Malibu resident's Doug Deluca and John Watkin, both avid music and guitar fans, who utilized their deep passion and connections to bring a grand scale music festival to the shores of Malibu. This year's fest focused on kids, community and creators, according to founder Doug DeLuca "From surf junkies with battered acoustics on the beach, to billionaire aficionados with priceless collections, the thriving beach community and the classic musical instrument seem to go hand-in-hand." The goal remains to feature globally renowned, award-winning legendary musicians, while supporting local musicians and giving back to local charities. Everyone came together for three days of unforgettable live performances.
The event organizers first got the buzz going with a Cure Spa Fashion Show, "Guitars and Couture" and master class by Tim Pierce at
MGF HQ in Malibu Village the week before. Kid's corner offered rock climbing and the overall vibe was family-friendly including vendor booths offering yes, you guessed it, guitars! The adjacent Malibu Village offered restaurants and galleries for attendees. The crew was busy switching acts on two stages offering local and world renown acts to everyone's delight. Music Director Steven Ferrone (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Duran Duran, Stevie Nicks, Slash, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash) made all the musicians feel at home. "Doug books the bands. But, they came over to my studio and we went over every detail over tea," says Ferrone.

Mick Fleetwood Blues Band shined on the main stage on Saturday.
The band featured Rick Vito on guitar, who had a short tenure with Fleetwood Mac many years ago. "He's just a brilliant guitar player....and so we're going to have a lot of fun," said Mick Fleetwood who ended the show by thanking his audience and telling them to take care of each other during this crazy times.

Mark Cochi runs RDR Audio and RDR Location Recording in upstate New York.
As an in-demand live sound mixer for television, Cochi has the freedom to devote his well-appointed studio - both in terms of fantastic gear and inspiring aesthetics - to musical acts that speak to his artistic soul and to audio-for-video post-production projects that challenge his skills. Honed by nearly thirty years in the business, those skills come wi
th the calm assurance of an
engineer who has a lifetime of successful work to his credit. A few years ago, Cochi stepped up the monitoring in his studio to active three-way ATC SCM25As, which now give him fatigue-free sessions and effortless translation. He recently brought his 5.1 post-production work up to the same standard with five of ATC's new two-way SCM12 passive monitors. "In my live sound mixing role, I have a prearranged target that I need to hit, which doesn't leave a ton of room for creative input," Cochi said. "In my studio, I'm much more of a purist. I prefer to record a whole band performing live. I'm not into trickery, and I'm not into a lot of comping of parts. I'd rather have someone play a part a half dozen times to get it right than have to stitch things together. Since I'm not making my living doing this, I have the freedom to try and get the artists working in that mindset on these kinds of things." He continued, "There wasn't any learning curve - even though the SCM12 is a two-way box, the famous ATC sound was there. The top is smooth and extended, the mids are accurate, and I was also impressed by their bass response; when I muted the sub, I still had plenty of low-end information with which to make decisions. I know it's pretty rare, and maybe a little reckless, to buy five monitors without ever having heard them, but it turned out to be a solid decision."

ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers
, hosted its 34th Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards
on Thursday, May 18, recognizing pop mastermind Max Martin
("Can't Stop the Feeling!" for Justin Timberlake, "Send My Love for Adele, and "Just Like Fire" for P!nk)
as Songwriter of the Year for an unprecedented tenth time.
The evening's highlights belonged to two highly accomplished, multi-platinum award-winning songwriters: Diane Warren
was honored with the prestigious ASCAP Founders Award, and pop star Meghan Trainor
received the ASCAP Vanguard Award.
Sony/ATV took honors for Publisher of the Year
and BMG for Independent
Publisher of the Year.
The event took place at the historic art deco Wiltern Theatre
in Los Angeles
in front of a packed audience of songwriters, composers, producers and music industry executives. ASCAP Pop Music Song of the Year went to "Love Yourself," written by Justin Bieber. In a tribute to Bieber and his team, 2017 ASCAP "EXPO Factor" Showcase-winning a cappella group The Filharmonic
performed the song live.
Grammy Goes To New York
In celebration of the Grammy Awards®' 60th anniversary, The Recording Academy®, in close collaboration with the Mayor's Office of New York City, Madison Square
Garden and CBS Corporation, take Music's Biggest Night® to New York City's Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018.
To announce the show's return to New York, The Recording Academy worked with creative agency TBWA\Chiat\Day and director Spike Lee on a star-studded film, titled "NY Stories," featuring New York artists sharing New York musical stories. The film takes viewers on a musical tour of the city, from the Apollo Theater in Harlem to Jay Z's Marcy Projects in Bedford-Stuyvesant, to all the neighborhoods and musical landmarks in between.
"I'm honored to be a part of this homage to the city I love, that is welcoming the 60th anniversary of the GRAMMYs into its big warm arms," said director Lee.

Becky Villaescusa
The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation® confirms the appointment of Becky Villaescusa as Vice President of Strategic Planning & Corporate Development. In this role, Villaescusa will report directly to Manolo Díaz, Senior Vice President of the Latin GRAMMY Foundation - the charity arm of The Latin Recording Academy®. The new appointee will mainly be responsible for the organization's fundraising efforts and increasing awareness of the wide-range of programs offered by the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation.
"Helping to grow the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation through strategic corporate partnerships is an opportunity I have always dreamed about as it allows me to further my personal commitment to empower the Latin community," Villaescusa said.
Prior to joining Latin World Entertainment, Villaescusa served as senior executive producer at Univision for more than 10 years where she was responsible for developing "Escándalo TV," "El Show De Cristina," and "Control," among other original content for the network.

Maezawa, Proud New Owner of Basquiat

New York Sotheby's made history on May 5 for sale of an untitled painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat for a record $110.5 million to the 42-year-old Japanese musician turned billionaire (net worth $3.6 billion) art collector Yusaku Maezawa.
The Basquiat piece Maezawa bought is the
most expensive painting sold in by an American artist. Basquiat (above), born in Brooklyn to Haitian and Puerto Rican parents, died in 1988 of an overdose aged just 27 after a fleeting eight-year career. The subject of much of Basquiat's work - ordeals endured by blacks in America - is finding renewed resonance in the wake of nationwide US protests about the shootings of unarmed black men by police.
 The world may not at first recognize the proud owner who shared this sentiment on his Instagram page: "I am happy to announce that I just won this masterpiece. When I first encountered this painting, I was struck with so much excitement and gratitude for my love of art. I want to share that experience with as many people as possible."
Maezawa started up a band with his classmates called Switch Style in high school. They released their first EP in 1993 and later got signed to BMG Japan. He moved to the US with a girlfriend, where he started collecting CDs and records of bands that he liked. His album collection became the basis for his first company, which sold imported albums and CDs through mail.
Mr Maezawa started buying and collecting contemporary art 10 years ago and founded the
Contemporary Art Foundation in Tokyo, which puts on two shows a year. He is also planning to build a museum in Chiba, Japan, just outside of Tokyo, according to Forbes.
