Expert in Nursing Care Award

The Mid-Oh
io District Nurses Association's Expert in Nursing Care award is given on annual basis to a nurse member who demonstrates extraordinary nursing care in ordinary settings, brings 'heart' into his/her practice, and exhibits the five values of an Expert of Nursing care into his/h er practice: Compassion, Competence, Conscience, Confidence and Commitment. This year'sExpert in Nursing Care award recipient is Deborah Shields, Ph.D, RN, CCRN, AHN-BC, QTTT. Debbie was nominated by her husband David Shields and Capital University CON Associate Dean, Heather Janiszewski-Goodin.

"We are excited to nominate Deborah Shields, PhD, RN for an Expert in Nursing Care Award to recognize outstanding Registered Nurses. Dr. Shields has been a Registered Nurse for 34 years and has been a member of the Mid-Ohio District Nurses Association for many years.

Debbie emulates the five values of an Expert in Nursing Care in practice. Her compassion for nursing, students, our profession, and humanity is unwavering.

She mentors students in our undergraduate and graduate nursing students about holistic nursing concepts and scholarship projects. She not only cares about her students' successes, she and guides them to be the very best  version of themselves. She meets students where they are and provides them an atmosphere of learning, growth, and reflection.

Dr. Shields has been an expert in holistic nursing for over 30 years and a nurse educator just as long. She is a board certified Advanced Holistic Nurse, a Qualified Therapeutic Touch Teacher, an End of Life Nursing Education Consortium Trainer, and a certified critical care nurse. She earned her Masters degree in 1986 and her PhD in 2008. She is a tenured, full professor at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. She received the Holistic Nurse of the Year award in 2009 and the AHNA Service Award in 2014 from the American Holistic Nurse Association. She is a member of numerous nursing organizations and has several publications, including peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and is the editor of three books.

Her conscience, confidence, and commitment are strong, ethically bound yet very humbling and caring. Dr. Shields is very open-minded when it comes to the nature of holistic nursing practice and self-care but has a high regard for rigor and evidence-based practice using both qualitative and quantitative research. She is an experienced educator and bedside registered nurse (still to this day - she works at Doctor's West in the PACU) and is often a quiet leader but emulates confidence and commitment with her very presence."

Congratulations Debbie!!

Annual Celebration of Nurses
We proudly celebrated nurses and our 92 nd anniversary at this year's Annual Dinner with colleagues both old and new. We were honored to have students and faculty from Capital University, Chamberlain, Mt. Carmel, Otterbein, Columbus State and Ohio State University. The Villa Milano restaurant provided us with a great meal, including several singing waiters who were happily clearing tables after the event!!

Our keynote speaker for the evening was MasterJeremy Roadruckfrom Centerville, Ohio.Jeremy, also known as"The Kung FuGuy" has taught Karate for 18+ years with a focus on strengthening the minds and bodies of children. His book " Your Best Child Ever: Is This Game Worth Winning" earned him the rank of #1 bestselling author on Amazon. Jeremy both entertained and challenged those present - entertained with his examples of how to fall safely by 'going low' to minimize fall distance, and challenged us to think of workplace issues from an energy perspective and then suggested ways we could use and/or re-direct those external forces of negative energy that sometimes come our way.
