NAMI ADVOCACY ALERT! Take Action!

May is Mental Health Month and how is Congress celebrating? By trying to decimate mental health coverage in America.

This week, there is a vote expected in the House on the amended American Health Care Act (AHCA). If this bill passes, millions of Americans will lose mental health coverage or be charged more simply because they have a mental health condition.

How does Congress' health care bill affect mental health?
  • The AHCA will strip over $800 billion from Medicaid over the next 10 years, forcing states to slash mental health services.
  • 24 million Americans will lose insurance for mental health care.
  • Allows states to:
    • Drop coverage of mental health and substance use (one of the essential health benefits) from insurance plans
    • Charge people higher premiums if they have a pre-existing condition, like depression or anxiety.
    • Create high-risk pools, which are another way of charging people with mental illness more money and providing less coverage
NAMI AHCA Talking Points (Revised 5/2/2017)
  • One in five Americans experience a mental health condition, but only half get needed treatment.
  • Coverage for mental health care helps people get treatment when they need it-helping them to stay in school, on the job and in recovery.
  • The American Health Care Act (AHCA), Congress' health care bill, will strip Medicaid funding and mental health protections from health insurance.
  • The AHCA will strip over $800 billion from Medicaid over the next 10 years, forcing states to slash mental health services.
  • 24 million more Americans will lose insurance for mental health care.
  • Insurance plans will be allowed to:
    • Drop coverage of mental health and substance use (one of the essential health benefits).
    • Charge people higher premiums if they have a pre-existing condition, like depression or anxiety.
  • People shouldn't be charged more because they have a mental health condition and mental health coverage should not be optional. Ever.

Tell your Representatives to VOTE NO on the AHCA.

Are You Ready for Mental Health Month in May?

During May, NAMI and the rest of the country will raise awareness of mental health. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care.
In 2017, NAMI will promote the theme " Into Mental Health: Inspired, Informed, Involved" throughout all awareness events, including Mental Health Month. The campaign will focus on the power of starting inspiring conversations, getting informed to know the right thing to say and becoming involved with NAMI activities. W e're asking everyone to join with us to say, "I'm in to mental health!"

As a NAMI leader, you play a significant role in growing the movement. NAMI has created resources you may use to make Mental Health Month as successful as possible:
  • Message guide and style sheet
  • Social media toolkit
  • Sample press release
  • Customizable flyer in Microsoft Word
  • Graphics to download, print or share on social media
