Gaining insight into international research

A message from Vice Provost Philip Wainwright

Our last newsletter highlighted the Global Strategies' focus on faculty and student mobility across borders. In this issue, we look at the research generated by crossing borders, both disciplinary and geo-political.

On an institutional scale, the importance of international faculty research goes to the core of Emory's mission, but what does that intellectual journey look like for individual scholars and what unique opportunities and challenges does it raise? What can faculty who are interested in expanding their research into the international realm learn from others' experiences? And what can we, as the stewards of Emory's Global Strategies, learn from them about how best to provide support?

Border Crossings, an ongoing series being launched in this issue of our newsletter, looks at these questions through conversations with faculty engaged in international research. This series will highlight the breadth of exciting research already in progress and offer insight into how top-tier faculty navigate international work.

The impact of Emory's research is substantially increased by international collaborations. Emory faculty publications that have an international co-author have 2.5 times the number of citations as those that do not. GSI has been active in promoting international research collaborations through its country initiatives and its cultivation of institutional partnerships.

New faculty director of the Halle Institute

Vice Provost Philip Wainwright is pleased to announce that Jeffrey Lesser, Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of History, has accepted the position of director of the Claus M. Halle Institute for Global Learning, effective September 1, 2017. Professor Lesser will continue to serve as chair of the Department of History and focus on new strategies for increasing the impact of the Halle Institute on Emory's campus during the first year of this three-year appointment.

As director, Lesser will promote Emory's global identity by maximizing the Halle Institute's impact as a global center for research, scholarship, and education. A great deal of Emory University's research and teaching takes place outside of the United States. The Halle Institute supports Emory's strategic global priorities by facilitating the exchange of people and ideas between Emory and institutions around the world. It partners with schools and centers at Emory to cultivate global perspectives and international understanding on campus and beyond.

Updates on executive order addressing employment-based programs
ISSS continues to closely monitor immigration-related executive orders, including the April 18 order to "Buy American and Hire American," which, among other things, addresses the H-1B Specialty Worker program. No immediate changes will occur with H-1B or other employment-based regulations due to this executive order; however, we may see an increase in government enforcement efforts and site visits. For a more in-depth analysis of the order's scope and impact, please visit isss.emory.edu.

BPI project on travel agency services and travel policies
Emory's Office of University Consulting / Business Practice Improvement (BPI) is working on a project to look at opportunities for improvement in the current level of service provided by Emory's travel agencies. This project will also involve a review of our current travel policies to ensure that they effectively meet our operational needs. BPI has formed a working group of staff involved in travel matters to help guide this project and has also been holding a number of focus groups to gain input from travelers and the people who support them. If you have any feedback you would like to share on our current travel processes and policies, please contact Jen Kostyrna.
