NYCOMEC's First Sponsored Residency Program at Orange Regional Medical Center

On April 28, 2017, the Psychiatry residency program at Orange Regional Medical Center (ORMC),  institutionally-sponsored by NYCOMEC, received ACGME Initial Accreditation effective July 1, 2016. Congratulations to Drs. Israelski and Vieux! 

NYCOMEC will continue to work with them to move to the next step: achieving Osteopathic Recognition. All NYCOMEC programs are welcome to contact our office at 516.686.3730 with any questions about applying for ACGME Accreditation and/or Osteopathic Recognition. 
New Scholarly Activity Opportunity for NYCOMEC Faculty: May 25, 2017

NYCOMEC is pleased to assist our member institutions with all documentation requirements related to contracts, registration, completion of training and verification of education. We are currently processing the trainee registration forms and hospital contracts for the new academic year (2017-2018).  For your convenience, the Registration Form can be found on our  website Please be reminded to submit them before trainees begin the academic year.

2017 AODME/AACOM Conference

The Joint AACOM & AODME 2017 Annual Conference, with the theme Educating Leaders for Integrated Health Systems, A Paradigm for the Future, took place from April 26 to April 29, 2017, in Baltimore, MD. NYCOMEC member institutions had a large representation across the programs, from sessions on admission to medical schools to medical research posters:

At the conference, one of the focuses was the importance of attaining osteopathic recognition by residency programs in order to perpetuate the osteopathic philosophy.

Shawn P. Cannon, D.O., FACOI, Chief Academic Officer, Director of Medical Education, Southampton Hospital, and Member of NYCOMEC Board of Directors was appointed to represent Region 1 on the AODME Board of Trustees.
NYCOMEC Members Dine Together at NYCOMEC-sponsored Hospitality Event  
35 NYCOMEC members gathered together to enjoy dinner and share camaraderie at a hospitality event hosted by NYCOMEC on April 26, 2017,  during the AODME/AACOM Conference in Baltimore, MD. The dinner provided  an informal opportunity for members to build fellowship while  discussing GME-related concerns.  At the dinner, Dr. Broder facilitated a discussion on each member's aspirations for their programs under the Single Accreditation System.
NYCOMEC Co-Sponsored NYIT Global Health Grand Rounds

NYCOMEC co-sponsored the NYIT Global Health Grand Rounds o n Monday May 1, 2017. Isha Mehta, M.D. , Chief of Gynecology, Elmhurst Hospital, shared her experience in women's health care outside of the United States and the challenges women around the world face in addressing their health with her  presentation titled Women's Health: A Global Health Challenge. The presentation was well received by a large audience comprised of faculty, students and trainees.

All members of the osteopathic professional family and AOA affiliate groups are encouraged to submit applications of interest to serve on an AOA Bureau, Council or Committee.

Apply now to serve in an AOA leadership position in 2017. ACGME Launches New Single GME Accreditation System  Web Pages 
 
The ACGME has added additional web pages with new information on the Single Accreditation System (SAS). 
The new pages provide specific information for AOA-approved programs and institutions applying for accreditation under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding. This information has been organized by stages in the accreditation process: application, pre-accreditation, and Initial Accreditation.

There is also now targeted information for AOA residents and DO students, as well as ACGME-accredited programs that are not AOA-approved. For each of these groups, applicable information is presented on such topics as terminology, eligibility, Osteopathic Recognition, and more.

The ACGME is collaborating with OPDA in the sixth webinar in a series of presentations designed around the six CLER Focus areas. The speakers will discuss key
themes and data from the National Report of Findings 2016 relating to supervision. They will highlight findings in four major areas: resident, fellow and faculty member awareness of the CLER's supervision; knowledge of supervision terminology and methods; engagement in supervision improvement (QI) activities; and involvement in developing and implementing the CLER's strategies for supervision. They will also expand upon these areas by including challenges and opportunities for improvement.

Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., Osteopathic Medicine Pioneer and Visionary, Announced Retirement

After nearly 40 years of advancing the field of osteopathic medicine and blazing trails for women and minorities, Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., is retiring as Vice President for Health Sciences and Medical Affairs at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), an institution she served for 16 years in multiple leadership roles.

Commendation Corner
Dr. Jeger Received AODME Lifetime Achievement Award

Abraham Jeger, Ph.D., Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, and Assistant Dean, Academic Outreach and Site Development, NYITCOM, received the 2017 AODME Lifetime Achievement Award on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at the Presidential Reception and Collegium of Fellows Induction Ceremony that took place during the  AACOM/AODME Joint Conference in Baltimore, MD. 
 
The award was presented to Dr. Jeger for his exemplary leadership and exceptional contributions to AODME. Lynn Mark, D.O., AODME President, and NYCOMEC Director of Accreditation, said that over the years Dr. Jeger "has been instrumental in advancing the mission and purposes of AODME by improving the quality of osteopathic medical education".

Dr. Steier Awarded at the SUNY Orange Foundation Annual Ceremony

Kenneth J. Steier D.O., M.B.A., M.P.H., Executive Dean, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, received the Leadership in Education Award at the SUNY Orange Foundation 11th Anniversary of the Annual Leadership Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 5, 2017. The SUNY Orange Foundation Annual Leadership Awards recognize excellence in health services.

2017 Spring Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades

The 2017 Spring Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades were published in mid-April. Three NYCOMEC member institutions are the proud receivers of the well-deserved A grade:
  • Eastern Long Island Hospital
  • Jersey City Medical Center, and 
  • Saint Barnabas Medical Center.
The Hospital Safety Grade scores hospitals on how safe they keep their patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.
