" 'Let everything in creation draw you to God. Refresh your mind with some innocent recreation and needful rest, if it were only to saunter through the garden or the fields, listening to the sermon preached by the flowers, the trees, the meadows, the sun, the sky, and the whole universe. You will find that they exhort you to love and praise God; that they excite you to extol the greatness of the Sovereign Architect Who has given them their being.

The 5th-8th graders enjoyed a wonderful presentation last Friday on zebra fish and how our study of them can teach us about our brains.  Dr. Harold Burgess from NIH answered many questions from our students.  See pictures below.

Science Assembly

Last Friday afternoon, students in Grades 5-8 were treated to an assembly by a Neuro-Scientist from the National Institute of Health after St. Ambrose was selected to host a USA Engineering and Science Nifty Fifty STEM Speaker!!!

Dr. Harold Burgess, PhD., is the Head of the Section of Behavioral Neurogenetics, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, at the NIH.  He spoke to students about his path toward becoming a scientist, that took a rather circuitous route from his undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne, Australia, to his Ph.D. from the Weizmann Institute of Science, in Israel.  His postdoctoral work was completed at the University of Pennsylvania.  In his presentation on Friday, he encouraged students to consider science as they discern their future career paths.  He explained what a typical day looks like for him as a scientist working in his own lab.  Presenting his own research on the brain behavior of zebrafish, he explained how their startle responses tells us a lot about human behavior and how it can inform research on autism and psychological diseases such as schizophrenia. He brought with him zebrafish embryos as well as a 3-D model of a zebrafish brain. Fascinating!  Thank you, Dr. Burgess!

Yikes - Anxiety, Fears, and Phobias - Normal for Children?

Everyone, from the youngest child to the oldest adult, experiences anxieties and fears at one time or another. Feeling anxious in a particularly uncomfortable situation never feels very good. However, with children, such feelings are not only normal, they are also necessary. Dealing with anxieties can prepare young people to handle the unsettling experiences and challenging situations of life.

Many Anxieties and Fears Are Normal

Anxiety is defined as "apprehension without apparent cause." It usually occurs when there is no immediate threat to a person's safety or well-being, but the threat feels real.
Anxiety makes someone want to escape the situation - fast. The heart beats quickly, the body might begin to perspire, and "butterflies" in the stomach soon follow. However, a little bit of anxiety can actually help people stay alert and focused.
Having fears or anxieties about certain things can also be helpful because it makes children behave in a safe way. For example, a child with a fear of fire would avoid playing with matches.
