Lockerly Newsletter January 2018
From the Director

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

I hope this finds you all warm, safe and happy after a blessed holiday season! Here at Lockerly, 2017 was an amazing year, and I'm not just saying that because it was my first year here.  Lockerly achieved some amazing milestones in 2017 including a new strategic plan, record attendance at Lockerly Under the Stars and Family Fun Day, we raised more money than our goal for the year and we began the process of installing a comprehensive irrigation system for the first time in our 50 year history.  All of this would not have been possible without you, our supporters or without the input and direction of a dedicated and hard working board of trustees.

The board recently elected officers for 2018 and I'm pleased to introduce you to this year's leadership team:
President: Joe Sama, POA Landscape Director, Reynolds Lake Oconee
Vice President: Doug Oetter, PhD, Professor, GCSU
Secretary:  Sandy Mercer, Retired, Georgia DOT
Treasurer:  Chuck Walsh, Retired, Commercial Real Estate Appraisal

The combined knowledge and passion of this leadership team is impressive and I look forward to working with them to accomplish the many goals we have set for 2018.

You'll see in this newsletter that we have some exciting programming planned for 2018, targeting children of all ages, 2 to 92.  We look forward to seeing you at one or more of these events!!

Warm regards,
Jennifer

From the President
As we start off 2018 I want to take a minute to thank all the volunteers, professional staff, and trustees that made 2017 a banner year for the Arboretum.  This support has allowed thousands of visitors to enjoy Rose Hill, the Arboretum grounds, and the Worley Outdoor Education Center.

I hope you were able to visit during the year and enjoy some of the events that took place in 2017.  If you haven't stopped by in a while I would like to welcome you back to enjoy the property.  Many of you enjoy the grounds during the spring bloom and mild weather but I would encourage you to visit during every season.  The 2017 fall color was breathtaking and rivaled more well known vistas in North Georgia.  Our camellias are blooming now and provide vivid colors on a cold winter day.  A tour of Rose Hill and the Woods Museum is a great rainy day activity.

One of the items that I am most proud of is the approval of a Strategic Plan for the Arboretum.  This will allow us to continue to expand and improve the educational programming, horticulture and historical components of the property.  Several key items that were identified in the plan included improved fishing programming, property irrigation overhaul, Rose Hill refurbishment, and more adult education offerings.  I am happy to announce that these items are in the works now with more details to follow soon.

I wish you a Happy New Year and thank you for your continued support of the Arboretum.

Joe Sama, President
