Teachers of the Year announced

At the annual Carl Junction Community Banquet, the school district named the teachers and support staff of the year.

District Teacher of the Year:

Scott Schneider

This year, the top honor of District Teacher of the Year went to 6th grade - HS Band Instructor Scott Schneider.

Other honors went to:

David Read - Secondary Teacher of the Year
Bob Hays - School Volunteer of the Year
Jill Adams - Support Staff of the Year

CJ hosts banquet for retiring staff

On the evening of Tuesday, May 2, CJ Schools hosted a retirement and years of service banquet at Butcher's Block Event Center.

Primary K-1 and 2-3 Buildings earn PBS recognition

State representatives from the Missouri Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (SW-PBS) Organization were on hand this week to recognize the Primary K-1 and 2-3 Buildings for their continued efforts in Positive Behavior Support with their students.

Carl Junction Primary K-1 earned "Gold Recognition." This is the only school in Southwest Missouri to receive this honor 10 years running. The Primary 2-3 earned "Silver Recognition."

This program is a framework for creating safe and orderly learning environments in schools, while improving the social-emotional outcomes for students. It is a proactive approach that relies on research based practices, including developing clear behavioral expectations, teaching these expectations, acknowledging appropriate behavior, consistently correcting inappropriate behavior, and using behavioral data to systematically solve problems.

In order to earn recognition, staff must document and generate reports on each student interaction. The data must reflect significant improvements of positive behavior or a decrease in the occurrence of negative behavior in the student referred.


	Tanner Fienen

CJ Franklin Tech Student earns top honor at State SkillsUSA

Carl Junction High School Senior Tanner Fienen earned the top honor in Collision Repair at the State SkillsUSA competition.

Fienen, who is enrolled in the technical programs at Franklin Technology Center, impressed the judges for the second year in a row with his welding, straightening metal, repairing plastic, analyzing frame damage, job interview, and written testing skills to repeat as the first place recipient.

Fienen, will compete against the top 47 students in the nation at the National SkillsUSA awards to be held in Louisville, Kentucky this June. Last year, Fienen placed 5th in the national competition.


	Allec Uber

Uber competes at International Building Contest

Allec Uber, a Junior at CJHS placed second in the Southwest Missouri district competition at a bridge building competition sponsored by Allgeier Martin and Associates of Joplin, held at MSSU. The top two winners were qualified to advance to the International competition level.

The International Bridge Building contest was held in Dallas, Texas in April.

At these competitions, students are tasked to design and construct a truss bridge made of balsa wood and glue. The bridges are loaded with weight to test failure and ranked on the basis of highest efficiency ratio.


	Hailey Russell

Art Honors

Carl Junction 8th grader, Hailey Russell, recently submitted an entry to a national art competition held by the Crayola Company - The 2016-17 Student Creative Leadership Art Expo. Russell submitted an original crayon drawing. Crayola was so impressed by her work that they extended her an offer for her project to be included in future educational resources produced by the company.

Carl Junction Junior High School art students participated in the Central Ozark Conference Art Show hosted by Neosho and Crowder College. Carl Junction 8th Grader Delaney Wentland won Best of Show.

Other CJJH students receiving recognition for their artwork include: Saedra Allen - 2nd place; Kody Thornton - Honorable Mention; Samantha Carlton - Honorable Mention; and Shiloh Sluder, Darby Skiles, Jackson Hinderliter, and Donavon Vantrease received Honorable Mention recognition for their group project.


	Delaney Wentland

Forty-seven pieces of art work from Carl Junction High School were submitted for competition and display at the 2017 Las Vegas Glass Crafts and Bead Expo held in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the largest glass trade show in the country.

The student art work was displayed in the Gallery of Excellence, which is composed of mainly professional art work. The following students won awards in the Glass Crafts & Bead Expo:

	Chase Boyd

Boyd Recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship

Carl Junction Senior Chase Boyd in one of fifteen Missouri high school students to be recognized by the Advisory Committee on Citizenship Education to receive the 2017 Missouri Award for Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship.

This award is based on academic achievement, extracurricular leadership, and community service. Boyd will be honored at a luncheon hosted by the Missouri State Board of Education and the Missouri Bar Advisory Committee on Citizenship Education at The Missouri Bar in Jefferson City. She will receive a plaque designating the award and be enrolled in the American Bar Association's Civics and Law Honor Roll.

Boyd plans to attend Baylor University in the Fall as a pre-med major.

Boyd was nominated for this honor by Carl Junction High School Teacher, Terry Higgins. She is the daughter of Joey Boyd and Larry Boyd.

This is the tenth year in a row that a Carl Junction Senior has received this honor.

Sigler and Dean selected to the Academic Excellence Team


	*Edith is the daughter of Kimra Ross-Sigler & James Sigler.*


Jessica is the daughter of Jason and Wendy Dean.

Carl Junction Seniors Edith Sigler and Jessica Dean have been selected to The Joplin Globe Academic Excellence Team.

Twenty area students were chosen to the team based on an overall score using grade point average and ACT (or SAT) scores.

The students attended an awards banquet that honored them and their chosen teachers recently at MSSU.


	Jillian is the daughter of Janet Hackney.

Hackney chosen as April's Golden Lion

Jillian Hackney, a Carl Junction senior, finds the time to balance her own academic and extra-curricular pursuits with staying very busy sharing her knowledge and helpfulness with younger students in the district. Her many achievements and skills have earned her the title of the MSSU Beimdiek Golden Lion recipient for April.

As part of her studies, Jillian works with students at the Intermediate building. She tutors 6th graders in Math and mentors at-risk 4th and 5th graders as a member of the program, Team Bulldog. She is a member of the Cadet teaching program, and also helps CJ's youngest students, in Kindergarten and 1st grades, achieve early literacy by reading to them.

Her future pursuits are to attend Missouri Southern State University, belonging to the honors program, and majoring in biology.

	Emilee is the daughter of Mark & Stacie Baker.

Baker receives Golden Lion for May

Band, volleyball, and volunteer work are among the favored pursuits of Emilee Baker, a Carl Junction senior. She uses her time and experience in these fields to help others, namely mentoring younger students and helping to feed the needy. These pursuits have earned her recognition as MSSU Beimdiek Golden Lion's recipient for the month of May.

Baker has organized and coached volleyball team for younger girls, taught clarinet, spent her time with service learning class at CJ: Reading Buddies, Team Bulldog, and volunteering with Bright Futures. In her free time, she has donated time and even her own finances to charities such as the Ronald McDonald House and Watered Gardens.

This achievement marks the fourth time this school year that a CJ senior has received the regional honor.

TSA Chapters honored at State

The Carl Junction High School and Jr. High Technology Student Association (TSA) chapters were very successful at the state competition in Rolla this past April.

Two students from the High School chapter and one student from the Jr. High chapter ran for state office. All three made it onto the state officer team.

Many of these students will travel to Orlando Florida June 21-25 to compete at the national competition.

CJ DI teams on route to International Competition

Teams from the Carl Junction School District recently competed in the State Destination Imagination Tournament held on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.

Participants from all over the state traveled to MSSU to compete in Destination Imagination, the world's largest creative problem solving program. The teams solved challenges that were scientific, technical, theatrical, structural, and improvisational. Teams that placed first at the affiliate tournament qualified to attend an international competition on May 24-27 on the campus of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

High School Band and Vocal Music have performed at the state level in group and solo competitions recently.

FBLA earns state honors

Carl Junction High School Future Business Leaders of America students brought home several awards from the FBLA State conference held in Springfield, MO.

Earning top awards and qualifying for the National convention are:

3rd Place: Partnership with a Business Report and Presentation - Trenton Dunlop, Gracie Smith, and Kayla Ellison

3rd Place: Gaming and Computer Programming - Gustavo Molina and Tiffany Durbin

Additional projects earning awards are:

9th Place: Banking and Financial Systems - Dason Boren and Katie Crider

7th Place: Community Service Project - Joanne Kim, Jera White, Katy Estabrook

Chapter of the Year, Gold Level - Dason Boren, Trenton Dunlop and Austin Rose

Storm Shelter Information

The Carl Junction School District is grateful for the community support to construct FEMA-rated safe room shelters. The shelters west of the Primary 2-3 building and south of the High School building will be open for public use when Severe Thunderstorm Warnings or Tornado Warnings are issued regardless of the time of day as capacity allows.

Your official notification that the Storm Shelters will be open will be through your NOAA Weather Radio. The Storm Shelters at the Primary 2-3 Building and at the High School will be opened when the National Weather Service issues a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning for our area. If a weather warning is issued after school hours, the doors will unlock automatically and district staff and volunteers will be at the facility for the duration of the weather warning.

We also need volunteers to assist during weather events outside regular school hours.
