Student Body Presidents Leadership Summit hosted by Capital High School, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Barber Park Events Center, Boise. This is an engaging, fast paced, one-day workshop that will help students and student council advisors learn the basics of building a strong school culture, leadership class and team. This conference will bring together students who are preparing to take on their new roles as A.S.B. Student Body President, A.S.B. Vice President, Senior Class President, Junior Class President, or other students who will play important leadership roles on campus. This conference is a powerful opportunity for the key leaders in a secondary school's student leadership program to receive quality leadership training while networking with other outstanding student leaders.

North Junior High School, Clash of the Vikings, an annual race event with proceeds going to benefit North Junior High sports and additional academic materials not covered by the District.
May 21: Boise High's Catalpa Quartet will present its 4th Annual Benefit Concert on Sunday, May 21st at 3:00 PM in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. Quartet members are Boise High School juniors: Anaise Boucher-Browning (viola), Jusung Lee (violin I), Abby Robison (violin II) and Ben Seabourn (cello). Since its founding in 2013, the Catalpa Quartet has raised over $17,000 for orchestral instrument repair at Title I elementary schools in the Boise School District. The concert is FREE and open to the public. Tax-deductible donations to the Catalpa Quartet Fund at the Boise Public Schools Education Foundation will be accepted at the door.

Boise District High Schools Again Nationally Recognized:
Boise, Borah, Capital and Timberline high schools once again have earned the national spotlight for preparing students for college and beyond.
A total of nine Idaho schools were identified on the Washington Post list: two high-income charters, Riverstone International School (Boise), Vallivue High School (Caldwell), Century High School (Pocatello) and the four Boise high schools. Approximately 11% of high schools nationwide were identified this year by the Post.
This is the 9th consecutive year that all four Boise District high schools have earned the distinction of being listed among America's Most Challenging High Schools by the Washington Post. Capital has been on for 9 years, Borah 10, Timberline for 16, and Boise High School for 19 consecutive years.

Idaho's U.S. Presidential Scholars from Boise District:
Two Boise School District high school seniors have been named 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholars for Idaho, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students. Boise High's Elizabeth S. Lee and Capital High's Henry Zhang (pictured below), are among 161 Presidential Scholars announced by the U.S. Department of Education.
As U.S. Presidential Scholars Lee and Zhang will receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in June and will be presented the U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House, in commemoration of their achievements.
Selections are based on academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and commitment to high ideals the U.S. Department of Education says.

Majority of Idaho's National Merit Scholarships Received by Boise District Students:
Nine of the 13 National Merit Scholarship recipients in Idaho for 2017 are from the Boise School District. National Merit $2,500 Scholarship recipients are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The nine Boise District students selected are among 2,500 Merit Scholars nationwide. Scholars may use their $2,500 award at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

Pre-Engineering Students Win Awards:
Boise School District's Pre-Engineering Programs (PLTW) at Borah, Boise, Capital and Timberline high schools recently completed the 5th Annual Design Competition sponsored by local tech start up, IdeaRoom, Inc. IdeaRoom CEO Russ Whitney and Elaine Anderson (pictured) recognized the student competitors designs last week with certificates and gift cards. For the last five years, IdeaRoom has sponsored a design contest open to PLTW Engineering students at all four District traditional high schools.
This year's challenge was to design a tiny building (i.e. storage shed (pictured), tiny home, planting/gardening room or children's play house). Students needed to render their design in color, provide technical blueprints, create a video and a hard copy as part of the design criteria.
Here are the results from the IdeaRoom design competition:

Boise School District Summer School:
Boise School District offers a wide variety of summer school classes for elementary, secondary and alternative secondary students to enhance their educational experiences beginning June 5th. Further information can be found on the 2017

TEM Revolution Summer Camps:
Designed by Stanford and MIT graduates, STEM Revolution Camps (formerly known as STEMbusUSA) provide students with fun and engaging opportunities to explore science and technology with no experience needed. Each camp is filled with exciting, hands-on experiences designed to build interest, knowledge, and technical skills the campers can take with them into the classroom and beyond. STEM Related Summer Learning Opportunties: Following is a list of STEM related summer learning opportunities for students:
- Idaho STEM Action Center -
Ariel Cordova, (pictured left) a sophomore at Borah High School, finished second in the nation for her review of "'Xanadu Jr.' turns heads with big hair, bright colors, leg warmers." In ranking the review, the judge commented: "Terrific review. Very nice set-up explaining who the Muses were with excellent easy to appreciate references.....Graceful transition to the specific performance and the strengths of all the students in lead roles. Perfect ending with acknowledgement of contributions of supporting cast and backstage crew. This really did sound like a fun time at the theater. I wish I could have been there to see Xanadu Jr. too!" Michelle Harmon is the student adviser.
Timberline student Schyler Voshell, received an honorable mention (fourth place) in sports reporting for the story "It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt." The judge commented, "Love the headline of this piece. Very good word play that leads right into the heart of the story." The Timberline adviser is Jeremy Bronner.
Borah Quadrant Bands and Students Continue Their Winning Ways:

South 9th Band: Excellent Rating
West 9th Band: Superior Rating- High Score at Festival
Borah Symphonic Band: Superior Rating - 1 of only 6 out of 31 bands to be rated Superior. The only non-auditioned program to do so and have been rated SUPERIOR
21 times in the past 25 years.
Borah Jazz Ensemble: BSU/Gene Harris Jazz festival- Superior Rating. They have been rated SUPERIOR 23 times in the past 25 years and placed 1st 11 times out of 22.
State Solo Competition: Held in Post Falls, ID.

Timberline Music Students Win Awards: The following Timberline High music students won awards at the State Solo Competition in Post Falls. Sebastian Houk won 3rd place in the state on trumpet, Tessa Smith 3rd place on bassoon, Emma Charlier 3rd place on Marimba, Kate Allen 3rd place in voice, and Oliver Blumenstein won 1st place in the state on bassoon.
Boise High Student Wins Music Award: Boise High junior Rachel Lee took 2nd place for Flute Solo at the recently held State Solo Competition in Post Falls.
Borah Teacher Awarded Grant: D.J. Eberlin, Borah High, Chemistry/Biology Teacher, received the Albertsons Grant Award through the Boise Foundation Committee. This grant was awarded to help Borah teachers promote/teach health and nutrition through the use of healthy soil, sound watering practices, and sustainable gardening. New corrugated garden boxes, soil, and watering materials were purchasesd with the $1000 awarded (pictured).

2017 Distinguished Service Recognition Program: Each year, Boise School District recognizes District employees for their years of service to the children of the Boise School District. This year, the
2017 Distinguished Service Recognition Program recognizes the service of 126 individuals representing a combined total of 2,970 years of service. We congratulate these staff members and honor their work in helping make Boise School District a high-performing and nationally recognized school district.
