The final Spirit Day of the year is Friday, May 19, and Wildcat parents get to choose the theme. Visit this poll and cast your vote! Votes will be accepted through end of day Monday, May 8.

GET READY! May is Bike Everywhere Month
Now that Whittier's Bicycle Skills and Safety Unit is nearly over, it is time to put those skills to good use. BIKE EVERYWHERE Month is here. Your Bike Everywhere 2017 Information and Calendar are attached or can be found outside the gym.

Students are invited to track and tally their bike minutes each day (to school or somewhere else they need to go). Completed calendars can be turned in to the Bike Everywhere box outside the gym by June 2. Mr. Pule will deliver prizes and add student minutes to the school total for Cascade Bicycle Club's area-wide Bike Everywhere challenge. Please remember to always bike safe and pono!

SAVE THE DATE: Bike/Unicycle To School Day, May 11
Mark Thursday, May 11 , on your calendar and bike to school with your Wildcat(s). A bike station will be set up to meet each Wildcat biker or unicycle rider with an incentive or two. Last year, 260+ Wildcats arrived on wheel/s on Bike to School Day. Let's push past 300 this year! Bicycle corrals will be set up to handle over flow.

PTA Seeking Nominations for Golden Acorn Award
Nominations for the Golden Acorn Award are due Friday. This award recognizes volunteers who have given outstanding service to children in the Whittier community. Please help us recognize and reward those amazing individuals within our school and community who meet the criteria for this award. Email your nomination along with a brief explanation for why your nominee deserves this recognition to [email protected].

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Final Community Mtg. May 24
The final PTA Community Meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, May 24. We will finalize the 2017-18 PTA budget. A full agenda will be posted no later than May 17.

Members will also be asked to vote on candidates for officer positions on the 2017-18 PTA Board. A Nominating Committee elected by the PTA membership in November has developed the following recommended slate of officer positions:

Whittier Staff Appreciation Week!

Whittier Summer Physical Education Enrichment Camp
Mr. Bryan Pule, Whittier's PE specialist, and Ms. Barbara Bruecher, Olympic View's PE specialist, will offer a 4-day (Mon., Wed. - Fri.) program at Whittier this summer.
 
Who: Students currently enrolled at Whittier (K-5th grade in 2016-17)
Where: Whittier Elementary School Gym / Playground
When: Mon., July 3 and Wed., July 5 - Fri., July 7 (no class July 4)
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Cost:  $60.00; a l imited number of half/full scholarships available 

Camp Objectives:  The program will provide a "success-oriented" experience with emphasis on individual skills building, small and large group activities, and the creation of a safe, cooperative environment where students will explore new challenges, improve skills, and participate in various healthy activities. It is our goal to build confidence, ability, and a true love of physical activity that will develop into a life-long habit.

Camp activities include:  Circus arts, health / fitness education, roller skating, jump rope skills, racquet sports, bonker ball, playground activities / games, team handball, pedometer use, bicycle safety / skills unit (B.Y.O. bike or use one provided), archery, and much more.

Volunteer Information
There is still time to help in 2017!
Team up with a friend and contribute your own flavor to the Whittier community. Volunteers are needed ASAP to fill the following school and/or PTA positions:
  • Lunchroom and recess volunteers, regular or once in a while; sign up online
  • 2017-18 Movie Nights Co-Chair(s), shadow in 2016-17

Required Volunteer Paperwork
To volunteer at Whittier during the 2016-2017 school year, you will need to complete the necessary paperwork. Printed volunteer packets are available in the office, or you can find the information and documents you need  here.

District News

School Choice Assignment
Open Enrollment for School Choice for the 2017-18 school year was February 13 to February 24, 2017. School choice applications will be accepted until May 31, but will not receive priority tiebreakers.  The results of Open Enrollment will be available online April 17 and sent out by mail to students granted new assignment in late April.

Summer Learning Opportunities
Seattle Public Schools offers several summer learning opportunities to help students engage in ongoing learning, enrichment, and skill building. To learn more about the opportunities available to elementary school students, click here.

Listed below are the first and last day of school and school break dates for the 2017-18   school year.

Additional dates of holidays, conferences, early release days, potential snow make-up days,   and the day between semesters will be included in the final approved calendar published in   June 2017 after the school board has approved the official 2017-18 calendar.

Students entering Kindergarten - 5th Grade are invited to join us for a summer full of engaging weekly themes, activities and field trips! Learn new skills, explore new friendships and provide your child a chance to grow and learn in a safe, fun environment.

Seattle Mariners Summer Baseball and Softball Camps
The Seattle Mariners are offering summer baseball and softball camps for kids in grades 1 through 5.  In Seattle, the camp will be held at Lower Woodland Park July 31   - August 3 . The camp will teach the game to all levels of players, providing an upbeat environment with a classroom extension philosophy .

All campers receive a T-shirt, expert instruction, lots of game play and plenty of surprises throughout the week. Additionally, the camp includes an exclusive   Safeco Field Experience .  For more information visit   www.marinerscamps.org or view the camp flyer.
