The district Staff Recognition Reception & Program will be at
5 pm Wednesday, May 17, in the EHS commons
. The program will recognize district length-of-service awards, special awards received by staff during the past year, and the retiring employees. As of today, we have 27 employees retiring.

opens at four locations May 30

d a mobile food trailer has been added. Free breakfast and lunch will be served to anyone 18 and younger on weekdays at EMS, Riverside, Village & WA White schools. The food trailer will serve meals from the Emporia Public Library and possibly one or more locations. Watch for the MealSpot mobile locations on Facebook.com/MealSpot. Locations also will be announced on KVOE shortly before 7 am each weekday.

TPA Advisory Council
Superintendent Kevin Case updated the board on discussions with the recently appointed TPA Advisory Council.
The advisory council's charge is to provide input to the board of education regarding possibilities, direction, needs and aspirations for TPA. Council members are:

The council will continue to meet and work with Tammy Torrens, who will be serving in a dual capacity for the 2017-18 school year. Tammy will be an instructor for the 6-8 TPA program along with devoting the other half of her day to program development for a school of choice to open in August of 2018.
Adult Education Report
Jason Hendry, director of the Flint Hills Technical College Adult Education Center, presented information on how the .5 mill tax levy for adult education is used. The half mill is levied through USD 253 to help support the GED and ESL programs offered through the Adult Education Center.
Bond Refinancing
The board approved a bond purchase agreement to refinance existing bonds. The sale will save $233,875 in interest. The board also approved a new IRS-required policy and compliance procedure resolution related to the refinancing. This is the fourth refinancing of the 2000 bonds, which has resulted in $2,013,074 in interest savings
Other Board Business
- Accepted a $25,000 grant from the Jones Foundation to the EHS Spartan Stop
- Accepted a $6,118.20 donation from the Timmerman PTO to purchase a two-year site license for online literacy resources.
- Approved changes to EHS course offerings for 2017-18 that provide more flexibility for students to meet graduation requirements
- Approved an agreement to continue the JAG program at EHS for two years with the district contributing $13,000 per year
- Approved the purchase of warranty services for wireless controller and security firewall
- Reviewed the 2017-18 student handbooks
