"It was an ideal spring day, a light blue sky, flecked with little
fleecy white clouds drifting across from west to east. The sun
was shining very brightly, and yet there was an exhilarating
nip in the air, which set an edge to a man's energy."

- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Resist Empathize Act Discuss

Each month we're going to highlight a few books on a subject of particular relevance.

May: Mental Health Awareness
Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, & Me, by
 Ellen Forney
Cartoonist Ellen Forney explores the relationship between "crazy" and "creative" in this graphic memoir of her bipolar disorder, woven with stories of famous bipolar artists and writers.  Shortly before her thirtieth birthday, Forney was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Flagrantly manic and terrified that medications would cause her to lose creativity, she began a years-long struggle to find mental stability while retaining her passions and creativity.

Other reads:

   Furiously Happy, by Jenny Lawson
In  Furiously Happy , #1  New York Times  bestselling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a  terrible  idea.

But terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.

Thirteen Reasons Why, by Jay Asher
Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker-his classmate and crush-who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah's voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out why.

The Round House, by Louise Erdrich
One of the most revered novelists of our time-a brilliant chronicler of Native-American life-Louise Erdrich returns to the territory of her bestselling, Pulitzer Prize finalist The Plague of Doves with The Round House, transporting readers to the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. It is an exquisitely told story of a boy on the cusp of manhood who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a terrible crime that upends and forever transforms his family.

Upcoming Events
This month's Local Author and Small Press Book Fair will take place on May 6th from 11:00am-1:00pm.
In addition to our two author readings, we'll be having giveaways and other fun surprises for children of all ages and the young at heart!
New Release from Natalie Goldberg: The Great Spring

Local author Natalie Goldberg will be joining us to discuss her new book,  The Great Spring: Writing Zen and This Zigzag Life , on  Thursday, May 11th at 6:30pm . Natalie will be introduced by Michele Huff, author of  Transformative Negotiator: Changing the Way We Come to Agreement from the Inside Out.

From beloved writing teacher and author of the best-selling Writing Down the Bones: a treasury of personal stories reflecting a life filled with journeys-inner and outer-zigzagging around the world and home again.

Here, Natalie Goldberg, "a writer both energized and enlightened" (Julia Cameron), shares those vivid moments that have wakened her to new ways of being. We follow alongside her mapless meanderings in the New Mexican desert and her pilgrimages to Bob Dylan's birthplace and to Larry McMurtry's dusty Texas ghost town of rare books. We feel her deep hunger while she sits zazen in a monastery in Japan, and her profound loss when she hears of the passing of a dear friend while teaching in the French countryside.
