The Outliers is a fast-paced teen series where one girl learns that in a world of intrigue, betrayal, and deeply buried secrets, it's vital to trust your
instincts. In
The Scattering, the
second book of this compelling series about a world where one small group of people are blessed - or cursed- with an incredible power, Wylie finds herself confronted with a choice. She was willing to do whatever it took to help Cassie, but is she prepared to go to the same extremes to help complete strangers... even if they are just like her?

May Book Recommendations
-
by Benjamin Ludwig
I was not prepared for a voice like Ginny Moon. She is adorable, serious, and sentimental, and it was all too easy to fall in line with her world. When we meet Ginny, a fourteen-year-old girl with autism, she's living in the Blue House with her Forever Mom and Dad, her adoptive parents. But she can't give up the memory of her Baby Doll, who she left in a suitcase the day she escaped from her abusive birth-mother's home. Torn between wanting to stay in her safe Forever Home and returning to her past to protect the thing she loves most, Ginny becomes the center of a complicated, all-too-human world. And you see that world through her eyes, for better or worse. A quirky, heartbreaking, and triumphant debut.

Customer Review: A fantasy coming of age novel starring a brave heroine,
The Black Witch will enchant anyone looking for a vibrant new fantasy world to delve into. Elloren Gardner grew up far removed from the bustling, lumenstone-lit streets of Valgard and the destiny that her celebrated lineage has laid out for her. She has long believed in the legends and histories passed down to her, but when her eccentric uncle enrolls her in Verpax University, she faces people and facts that defy her expectations. As Elloren struggles to find her strength in a place where everyone seems to be working against her, she realizes the injustices of the world - and her ability to make a difference within it. Fantasy fans will appreciate the rich lore of Erthia, a world vividly rendered by Laurie Forests's detailed descriptions, complex characters, and tangled family trees. This intense, seductive novel gripped me from the prologue, and in today's political climate, it serves as both a warning of the dangers of prejudice, and a reminder of how much diversity can enrich our lives if we let it.

"I Lost My House": Experiencing Historical Dispossession Through Repossession in the City of Riverside
Saturday, May 27 at 6 pm
Join us in welcoming Isabelle Placentia, who will give a
presentation focusing on the demographics of the wards in Riverside and the frequency of foreclosures, redlining, predatory lending, and more in those wards.
Isabelle is an applied anthropologist currently working in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Her research interests include the political economy of housing at the intersections of race, class, and gender, the experience of foreclosure at the individual and community level, and how the impacts of being unhoused are embodied and reflected in the negative health outcomes. As a member of the UC Center for Collaborative Research for an Equitable California, she co-produces presentations with community partners that engage policy makers as well as the general public in examining the dynamic issues surrounding housing affordability, availability, and equity.

Wonder Woman Day
Saturday, June 3 from 2-6 pm
Yes, we know Wonder Woman Day is a promotion for the movie. But we also happen to think Wonder Woman is a character worthy of attention and thought, so we are teaming up with Visionary Comics, Ann Pfeifle, and Kim Earhart on June 3 from 2-6 pm to celebrate soldier and suffragette Diana Prince (aka Wonder Woman).
We're giving you plenty of notice to head over to Visionary Comics (located at 3257 Market Street #10 in downtown Riverside), purchase some Wonder Woman comics, and reacquaint yourself with this Amazonian superhero originally introduced in 1941. It'll give you a chance to discover the awesome new comic book store if you haven't already, and you can look forward
to creating your own zine in a workshop held that day (more information to come).
You'll also be able to read Jill Lepore's
The Secret History of Wonder Woman
in time for a discussion on Wonder Woman Day! Ann and Kim have graciously agreed to lead the discussion at 4:30 pm that day. Fun and interesting!

April Event Wrap-Up & Literary Travelogue Challenge
A huge thank you to our wonderful Cellar Door family for making all of the crazy events in April great! Congratulations to Tom Patterson and Chris Moffatt for winning the Guess How Many Pages book contest and Laura Simonette for winning the "Science is Real" Trivia Contest on Independent Bookstore Day.
Book nerds that we all are, we are completely taken with the Indie Bookstore Day exclusive Literary Map of the United States, so we'll post one in the store along with this summer challenge:
Traveling to a state, or multiple states, within the US over the summer? Check out the literary map and read the book suggested for that state - of course, you can read other states' books as well. Here's the challenge (and you can thank Steven for this, by the way):
if Cellar Door customers collectively read all fifty states (52 books), we'll have a Literary Travelogue party in the late summer or early fall for all who fulfilled the challenge.
Our Facebook page will have an Event set up so that you can post your comments on the books, photos of you and your book in the matching state, or whatever else will add to our literary travels. You can also post your photos and comments on Tumblr or Twitter using #cellardoorlittravel, or post photos to Instagram and tag us (@cellardoorbookstore). No matter where you decide to share your literary travels, we hope to have as much participation as possible!
And no, books you've already read don't count! Some of the books are kids' books, so involve the whole family.
Of course, we have all of the books available for purchase. Let us know which book(s) you're reading in-store or by emailing us at [email protected] and we'll mark them on the Literary Map!
(Psst... we still have the map and other Indie Bookstore Day items for sale! Get 'em before they're gone.)
