Dear Friends,

At a recent meeting of our Worship and Music Committee of the Session, we approved the creation of a “Lay Liturgist” program for the 11:00 traditional service of worship. Lay liturgists have a long and important history in worship leadership in Presbyterian congregations. In fact, the role of lay leaders assisting in worship leadership can be traced back hundreds of years. With both ordained clergy and a lay liturgist leading worship, a congregation tangibly reflects our biblical belief in the “priesthood of all believers” wherein there is no hierarchical distinction among believers in the body of Christ (1 Peter Chapter 2). So, also, as the Apostle Paul so eloquently described in 1 Corinthians Chapter 12, each of us may indeed possess distinct spiritual gifts, but we need each other equally! In the context of our corporate life together through worship, we may serve the church in distinct roles, but everyone is the same before Christ – in need of His grace!

So, what, then, does a “lay liturgist” do in worship? Here are several examples. The liturgist could help lead the unison prayer of confession and read one or more of the scripture lessons for the day. He or she, might also lead the congregation in our affirmation of faith for the day (the Apostles’ Creed or Nicene Creed). The lay liturgist might also introduce the offering and/or offer the prayer of thanksgiving following the offering. These worship leadership tasks could expand or contract based on the comfort level of each particular liturgist. The lay liturgist is not expected to help plan worship items, or to pray extemporaneously, but rather to lead the congregation in worship using prepared texts and prayers already selected for the day.

There are two necessary qualifications for a lay liturgist. (1) The desire to serve the congregation through service in corporate worship. (2) A willingness to prepare and practice speaking publicly.

As with all public speaking, one key element of leading public worship is to be sufficiently familiar with your material in order that the congregation can focus on the act of worship, not the person leading worship.

I have had the pleasure of working with lay liturgists in two of the churches I have previously served. Serving in this way can be richly rewarding for those who are willing to serve. I look forward to this opportunity here at Trinity. Once we have identified who would like to participate in this “Lay Liturgist Cadre”, we will create a schedule for assisting in worship leadership. It may be that the same person may serve through an entire month, or it may be that we will schedule folks by the week.

If YOU would like to serve as a lay liturgist, please speak with me, and/or send me an email at mvmason@trinitytr.org . If you would like to learn more about what is involved before volunteering, please contact me and we can discuss the particulars.

Blessings,

                  Marc
