I am sending out a special blessing to all of you who are mothers. Below you will find my thoughts on the importance of being loved and nurtured by mothers. I lost my mother when I was only 24 years old. I still think of her often and will always love her deeply - flaws and all. I know she did the best she could do.

My mom - Evelyn

While I have not had any birth children, I have a strong mothering instinct and cannot help myself from feeding and loving the family and friends in my life.  As we move toward more inclusion of women in leadership, business, and politics, I believe the caretaker aspect of feminine energy will ultimately save the planet. Mother Earth needs all of us now more than ever.

  • A beautiful article about how to cherish your mother now, written by a woman who lost her mom when she was young.
  • This article made me stop and think - about my mother and what she was like as a young woman before I knew her.
  • In the next newsletter, I will give you a full review of the Dalai Lama's new book, The Book of Joy, that he co-authored with Bishop Desmond Tutu. But I just could not wait to share this list of the Dalai Lama's 18 Rules of Living.

Let Yourself Be Mothered

I have to admit that I used to dread Mother's Day. Having lost my mom when I was young, I went through many years where I would bring a bah-hum-bug attitude to all the hooplah about mothers I saw everywhere this time of year. I felt sorry for myself and a bit empty inside.

This changed one year when I had a true ah-ha moment. While I understood that I missed my mom, I dug a bit deeper and discovered what I really longed for was the feeling of being mothered. We all need to have that safe space and connection with someone who loves us unconditionally, supports our endeavors, and soothes our wounds.

While it is wonderful when that can be experienced with our biological mother, this is often not possible. We may lose our mother, as I did, or our mother may not be able to give us what we need. This does not mean that need goes away. It is a vital human need that yearns to be filled.

The really big breakthrough for me came when I recognized this need could be met by someone other than my biological mother. I had a very loving grandmother who lived many years after my mom. I am also was blessed with a wonderful mother-in-law who is a special friend and motherly figure and is still with me. And, most importantly, I could surround myself with loving and giving women friends who would be my safe place to land and would support and encourage me when I stumbled.

The key learning for me was to honor my need to be mothered and look for opportunities to reach out and let others fill that space in my heart. Yes, it means being a bit vulnerable, but that risk is so worth the reward of knowing that I have special mothers in my life. It also reminds me to reach out to others and offer a little extra dose of mothering to those in my circle.

So, if you have lost your mother or never really experienced being mothered, don't let that be the end of the matter. Look for ways to be nurtured and cared for by loving hearts. And if you are fortunate to still have your mother, take an extra moment or two to let her know how much you appreciate her. Don't assume she knows how you feel. Say the words and touch her heart.
