Take the Bite and the Sting out of Working Outdoors
Working outside puts workers at risk for countless hazards. One group of hazards that doesn't get as much attention are biting and stinging insects and animals. Here is how you can protect yourself from mosquitoes, spiders and ticks:
  1. To protect yourself from biting and stinging insects, wear long pants, socks, and long-sleeved shirts
  2. Tuck pant legs into socks or boots
  3. Wear high boots or closed shoes that cover your feet completely
  4. Wear a hat
  5. Use insect repellents that contain DEET or Picaridin
  6. Check before drinking from cups, bottles or cans. Stinging insects are attracted to sweet drinks
  7. Avoid wearing heavy perfumes or scented lotions or soaps
  8. Avoid fire ants; their bites are painful and cause blisters
  9. Severe reactions to fire ant bites (chest pain, nausea, sweating, loss of breath, serious swelling or slurred speech) require immediate medical treatment
Treat other, less serious bites and stings with over-the-counter products that relieve pain and prevent infection
