Member Spotlight

Tanya K. Kearney is the president of the local ANAC chapter in Norfolk, Virginia known as The First Virginia Chapter. She is the director of the HIV/AIDS Resource and Consultation Center, responsible for programs and conferences that provide HIV education for providers, health care professionals, case managers, consumers, outreach workers, students, communities, churches and more. Tanya has been trained in cultural diversi ty and is identified as a Safe Zone contact for the LGBTQ community. 

She has a PhD in General Human Services and her Doctoral research addressed quality of life for people living with HIV.  Tanya is an active member of her church, serving as trustee, secretary for the Annual Family & Friend Day, member of Women's Usher Board and is a b oard member for a local nonprofit, Teens with a Purpose.   Her ANAC chapter members describe her as "the go to person to get things done. She has the ability to multi-task and is truly effective in activity and outcome."

Earlier in 2017, ANAC membership voted to expand our base and create the partner member category of national membership. This level is open to non-nurse members of the healthcare team, educators, administrators, pharmacists, epidemiologists and others who support our mission and vision. Partner members may vote in all ANAC elections, serve on national committees, hold local leadership and up to two seats on the national board.  
Education

May is National Viral Hepatitis Awareness Month.   Raising awareness of viral hepatitis as a major public health threat in the United States, particularly the HIV-positive population is critical. Nurses can play a role in encouraging testing to help identify the millions living with these often silent infections. According to the  2015 surveillance data  compiled by the CDC, the number of new (acute) infections of HBV and HCV are rising in the U.S. 

Research

ANAC Nurses Selected to Join the NIH's Adolescent HIV Implementation Science Alliance (AHISA)
Dr. Ann Kurth (Dean and Professor, Yale University) and Dr. LaRon Nelson (Dean's Endowed Fellow in Health Disparities and Assistant Professor, University of Rochester) were among 15 investigators chosen as founding members of AHISA. AHISA is an initiative of the NIH Fogarty International Center designed to maximize the impact of research on HIV program outcomes for youth in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Kurth's research is focused on HIV testing and linkage to care for adolescent girls in Kenya. Dr. Nelson's work is focused on stigma reduction strategies to improve treatment engagement for adolescent MSM in Ghana.

New York State STD Conference

The NYS Department of Health Clinical Education Initiative STD Center of Excellence will hold its Annual NYS STD Conferences on Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Conference & Event Center at Niagara Falls, Niagara Falls, NY.  This free, full-day conference will focus on the latest STD clinical and public health information. 30-30-30 Campaign

2017 is our 30th anniversary! In recognition, we've launched a one-time fundraising campaign called 30-30-30   with a goal of raising $30,000 from members, $30,000 from organizations and $30,000 in   Board of Directors donations.
