Our
Chamber Steel Shoot Challenge,
presented by
Bluegrass Hearing Clinic, was held May 6 at Sugar Creek Range. The winning team, Cook's Rookies, will have the
traveling trophy on display for the next year. Please see pictures and more on the day below.
Other projects underway include a new
Idea Festival and Career Maker Faire which will expose students to career and college opportunities in the our region and innovation in select career clusters and STEM disciplines. We will be sharing more information with our business community as we develop this event, which will be held at Centre College on November 14. We will be advancing the regional economically and academically by bringing hundreds of 8th-12th grade students for an exciting day of networking and relationship building. Business will be invited to set up "TO DO" exhibits and to provide something students can do, see, feel, touch, smell, or provide an experience or a demonstration. The focus will be on career clusters in STEM, Health Care & Human Services, Environment and Natural Resources, Manufacturing & Business, Education, Architecture & Construction, Agriculture & Food and Arts and Humanities. Students will also be invited to present TED-type presentations to foster creativity, curiosity, innovation and transformational learning based on career clusters and life experiences. Watch for more information on this collaborative effort of the Bluegrass Higher Education Consortium and managed by Bluegrass Tomorrow. This is the second IF Bluegrass Student Day (the first was held at EKU.)
Watch for information on a
Disaster Prep/Recovery presentation in August or September. The U.S. Small Business Administration and the I.R.S. are working with me to bring this workshop to our area.
We are also beginning discussions with our local ASAP group to offer another
Substance Use workshop for the business community this fall. Resources and a keynoter will share information for businesses on this tough issue facing all of us.
Work is also underway by the Chamber's Workforce Development committee for our
10th Annual Teacher Academy
program June 6-8.
The goals of the
Teacher
Academy
are:
-
To increase awareness among educators of career opportunities and required skills of jobs
in local businesses and industries;
-
To provide educators with "real world" examples of the application of academic content
and soft skills taught in the schools; an
-
To expand collaborative relationships among school systems and the business community.
Again this year, we are extending an invitation to
educators
from school systems in the seven county region surrounding Danville (Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Lincoln, Marion, Mercer and Washington counties), in addition to Danville Independent, Burgin Independent, KSD and Danville Christian
Academy
. Also invited to join us are those serving on site based councils and school boards. This is a regional effort because 64% of our workforce is from our surrounding area.
The 2018 Danville Livability Magazine planning is underway. The magazine gives a look at our community through articles and photography showcasing our quality of life and economic development opportunities. 5000 magazines are printed annually and used by numerous organizations, including the chamber, tourism, Main Street programs, economic development office, city and county governments, real estate offices, the hospital, etc. to promote the region. Chamber members are promoted and included in two directories (alphabetically and categorically) in the back section, as well. We hope you will consider advertising in this unique publication that promotes our communities.

Ephraim McDowell Health held an open house to introduce the community to its new Women's Breast & Health Center Thursday, May 11. The center offers a new approach to the early detection of breast cancer. The Women's Breast & Health Center is located on the second floor of Ephraim McDowell Diagnostic Center at 101 Daniel Drive in Danville.
This state-of-the-art facility offers a spa-like environment where patients will enjoy the benefits of changing rooms, warm robes, and a private locker to secure valuables. Another feature is a tranquility area for patients to enjoy that includes plush chairs, a foot rest, and complimentary coffee, tea or water. Services provided are state-of-the-art 3D Tomosynthesis mammograms, bone density analysis and ultrasound. In many cases, test results may be available before patients leave.
The Women's Breast & Health Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. With your physician's order, you can call (859) 239-1282 to schedule an appointment for a mammogram, bone density test or ultrasound of the breast, abdomen, pelvis or thyroid.

Mark your calendar for June 20 as the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce hosts a follow-up Community Forum. The meeting will be to share work underway since issues were identified in a February 21 Workforce Development community forum. That meeting was to invite dozens of interested agencies and individuals to meet and discuss issues and resources in our community. As a result of facilitated small groups, a list of issues was developed and the Chamber's workforce committee prioritized those and began work on two. This meeting continues the discussion and shares the work underway on developing a pre-employment training course and the implementation of a resource list into the Bluegrass and Heart of Kentucky United Way's 211 Resource Directory. The meeting will be held at the Boyle County Fire Headquarters, located at 1500 Lebanon Road, and will begin at 8:30 a.m. |

Congratulations to the 2016-2017 Leadership Boyle County graduates. Besides the Graduation certificate, they also received citations and commendations from the Kentucky Senate, the Kentucky House of Representatives, the Boyle County Fiscal Court and the City of Danville. All were also commissioned as Kentucky Colonels.Each graduate also received a LBC pin and a LBC t-shirt. Small group projects were presented by the class on the last day and included: a Sunrise Leadership project that will teach life skills to boys who are living there; an LBC Alumni Project; a 4 Our Kids 3K run; and a new publication/map called Boyle County: Off the Beaten Path that features our rural part of the county, including agriculture.
