Alamo Colleges District - Northwest Vista College Named Number One Community College in Texas
Northwest VIsta College moved to the top of the Best
Community Colleges in Texas list for 2017.

The Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Alamo Colleges District - Northwest Vista College (NVC) is ranked as the best community college in Texas for 2017 by BestColleges.com. This is the first time that the college has earned the top spot on the state list. The previous two years, the college was listed second on the Texas list of community colleges.

The ranking is based on key performance indicators such as acceptance, retention, graduation, enrollment rates and loan default percentages as a measure of graduates' success. The data comes from the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Educational Statistics. It includes the Integrated Postsec-ondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and College Navigator.

NVC has seen a 51 percent increase in students earning associate degrees from 2015 to 2016. More than 17,000 students attend the college, pursuing associate degrees, certificates and transfer credit.

NVC is also listed among the top 25 community colleges in the nation for Hispanics, according to Hispanic Outlook on Edu-cation magazine. Hispanic enrollment at NVC grew from 44 percent in 2005 to 62 percent in the 2014-2015 academic year. The number of associate degrees earned by Hispanic students also grew from 44 percent in 2005 to 62 percent in the 2014-2015 academic year.


Alamo Colleges District - San Antonio College Recognized Nationally for Online Learning
Alamo Colleges District - San Antonio College has been recognized for the excellence of its  online programs.


Alamo Colleges District - 
San Antonio College (SAC) has been recognized by the Community for Accredited Online Schools, Accredited-SchoolsOnline.org, as one of the best colleges offering online learning in the nation. As a leading resource for campus and online learning, the site released its annual ranking for the 2017 school year, honoring SAC multiple times for their excellence in online learning.

To qualify, schools must hold public or private not-for-profit status in addition to institutional accreditation. Top schools are determined by a scoring system that uses value-based methodology, analyzing several qualitative and quantitative data points. SAC's 2017 awards were for: Best Online Schools in Texas  and Best Online Associate Degree, along with numerous awards for individual programs and degrees. For the full list, click  here.

Team Advances
to National Finals

A local team of students from the Alamo Colleges District Alamo Academies is headed to Baltimore, Md., as a finalist in the national championship round of CyberPatriot IX- National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.  The national competiton will take place in April. This is the sixth year and now two years in a row that the Alamo Academies team has earned a spot at the national competition. They also earned the Mayor's Cup for the sixth year. 

Since 2009, CyberPatriot's National Youth Cyber Defense Competition has challenged teams of two to six students to harden simulated computer systems and resolve real-life cybersecurity situations faced by industry professionals.

The competition provides students hands-on experience securing computer networks while educating and motivating them toward careers in cybersecurity and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Led by Academies Coordinator Alyssa Trevino, San Antonio College Computer Information Systems (CIS) Department Chair Troy Touchette and SAC CIS Faculty Member Mike Matuszek, the Alamo Academies National Finalist team is one of just twelve teams to advance from a pool of more than 2,200 Open Division teams.
