CELEBRATING COMMUNITY AND CALLING
Throughout April and early May, we held many meaningful celebrations at Muskingum, from Inauguration Week through Commencement, when our Class of 2017 became the newest members of our Long Magenta Line. They will now follow their calling beyond our University, serving others and making their impact on the world, just as you have done.

INAUGURATION WEEK
The week leading up to the Inaugural Convocation was full of wonderful performances by our students in the Spring Musical Pippin, the community worship service Rhythms of the Spirit: Faith, Learning and Service, and the Student Honors Recital. Our students shared their creative art works during the Senior Art Show Opening and we all enjoyed Student Appreciation Day in the Quad Center together.

A standing-room-only crowd was inspired by the inaugural lecture of the
J
ohn Glenn Distinguished Lecture Series in Earth and Planetary Sciences on Wednesday, April 5. Dr. Scott E. Parazynski, a veteran of five Space Shuttle missions, physician, explorer, and entrepreneur, described his STS-95 crewmate John Glenn as "an American patriot and personal hero of mine," and provided firsthand insights into the frontiers of space, world exploration, and technology development. The new annual lecture series was
established and endowed by
Bill Lovejoy '51 and his late wife Martha Johnson Lovejoy '52.

The Student Scholarship Showcase highlighted our
students' original research achievements, featuring 36 poster presentations and filling the lobbies and atria of Boyd Science Center and Caldwell Hall. Nineteen majors were represented, including biology, chemistry, physics, nursing, athletic training, education, business, communication, political science, and psychology.

I
was honored by the presence of our campus community members, trustees, alumni, friends, and guests who gathered on Friday, April 7 for the Inaugural Convocation. It was so very meaningful that our nineteenth and twentieth Presidents - Samuel W. Speck, Jr. '59 and President Emerita Anne C. Steele -participated in the ceremony led by Chair of the Board of Trustees Hal Burlingame '62. Together we celebrated Muskingum's long-standing history of community engagement, service, and exploration and looked toward a future where we will continue to create outstanding new opportunities and experiences for our students. We have only just begun to write the next chapter in Muskingum's story - and in the stories our students will write upon the world!
Inauguration Week ended on Saturday, April 8 with a community service project at the New Concord Area Pool, a community festival held on our campus, and the 5th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta on our campus lake.

Mary Hetrick Kaufmann '87 was the featured speaker for our
25th Graduate Commencement on
May 4. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for her impact on others in the worlds of business, education, and community service. Our graduates received Post-master's Educational Specialist, Master of Education, Master of Arts in Teaching, and Master of Information Strategy, Systems and Technology degrees during the ceremony in Brown Chapel.

Wildlife conservationist, global explorer, and media personality Suzi Egli Hanna '69 was the keynote speaker for our 172nd Undergraduate Commencement
on May 6. She shared the inspiration behind her work with the assistance of animal ambassadors from the Columbus Zoo, including a penguin, a sloth, and two cheetahs. Suzi was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for her lifelong commitment to educating others about the animal world, impacting wildlife conservation on every continent, and providing humanitarian support to the remote mountain villages of Rwanda.

SPOTLIGHT ON ATHLETICS
We celebrated our 2016-17 Fighting Muskie student-athletes at the second annual Golden Hook Awards. The Muskingum Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which represents all 21 varsity sports at the University, honored individual athletes and teams in 12 categories for their accomplishments throughout the year. The Muskies were proud to host two
OAC Championship Events this spring. The two-day Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Johnson Family Track in McConagha Stadium showcased our state-of-the-art track facilities to top student-athletes. Senior Julie Fobes finished third in the 5,000-meter run and second in the 10,000-meter run, and senior Tristen Wiles finished third in the javelin. The Muskies also hosted the OAC Men's Golf Championships at River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ohio, in a three-day tournament featuring the top 40 golfers in the league. Senior Luke Janci finished tied for 12th to lead the Muskies.

EXTENDING THE LONG MAGENTA LINE

It was wonderful to see mulitple generations of Muskies represented - and hear many great Muskie stories exchanged - during the 2017 Annual Legacy Luncheon. Our current legacy students were joined on campus by their families, the Alumni Council, and members of the Board of Trustees for the April 8 event.
|
The first
Muskie Preview Day for members of the incoming Class of 2021 was held on April 21. Our newest Muskies completed a
variety of orientation tasks and began to meet their new classmates. The Preview Days will continue throughout the summer, as we prepare for the Fall 2017 semester. You can help us recruit new Muskies at any time by visiting our

SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Did you know that Graduate and Continuing Studies offers a variety of professional development opportunities throughout the year for teachers, coaches, nurses and business people? Our Accelerated Summer Programs for Educators are starting soon. We offer credentials for intervention specialists, in gifted education, for educational leaders, and in TESOL - Teaching English as a Second Language. The highly desirable reading endorsement is available fully online, and many of our programs are available at different locations across the region including Columbus, Cleveland, and Akron/Canton.
