Macomb/St. Clair team competes at State 4-H Horse Judging Contest

From left to right: Sharon Torello, Audrey Beaudin, Erin Carbury, Felishia Block, Sara Scott, Jaelyn Sutphin, Hailey Moses, Madilyn Morris, Shauna McIntosh, Breanna Ngow, Carrie Brown, and Sam Enright, with Coach Lucy Brown in front.

Macomb and St. Clair County 4-H Horse Judging Team members experienced much success at the State 4-H Horse Judging Contest held at MSU on March 26th. The twelve project members were split into three teams, finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the state with some great individual results as well.

The combined Macomb/St. Clair team of Audrey Beaudin, Felishia Block, Hailey Moses, and Sara Scott ranked second in reasons and overall. They will go on to represent Michigan at the American Quarter Horse Congress judging contest this coming October, in Columbus, Ohio. Individually, Felishia finished 8th overall and 9th in reasons, in the senior division.

The St. Clair County team comprised of Shauna McIntosh, Breanna Ngow, Jaelyn Sutphin, and Sharon Torello ended up 3rd in the state, both in reasons, and in their overall score. This team will go on to compete at the Eastern National 4-H Round-up in Louisville, Kentucky in November. Individually Jaelyn finished 7th overall, and Shauna finished 9th. Additionally, Breanna went a step further, performing additional requirements to compete in the FFA division as well, where she placed 6th individually and was a member of the second place FFA team.

The final St. Clair County team of Carrie Brown, Erin Carbury, Sam Enright, and Madilyn Morris finished 4th in the state. While they don't have the opportunity to go on to the national level this year, they'll continue to practice this summer, ready to step in for any of their team mates, if needed. Individually, Madilyn placed 6th in the reasons category among very strong competition.

A great contest was had by all Macomb and St Clair County team members, with everyone finishing in the top 20. Audrey Beaudin, Sara Scott, and Erin Carbury also gave up their novice year and jumped straight into competition with seasoned horse judging project participants. This meant they had to give an extra set of reasons, and compete in a tougher pool of contestants, but they rose to the challenge, turning in fantastic individual scores.

The horse judging project will begin accepting new members this fall. Meetings are held the first Monday of every month from October through April at Goodells County Park, with additional meetings and clinics to be determined. As project members will tell you, they learn not only how to judge horses, but also public speaking and decision making skills, along with tips to improve their own horse show performances. Members who just want to learn, and don't want to compete are accepted as well. 4-Hers need not have a horse to participate in the horse judging project. Anyone interested can contact coach Lucy Brown at 586-855-3215 or [email protected] for more information or to be placed on next year's contact list.
