Happy New Year

Happy New Year and welcome to the 2018 Winter Term! We hope that you enjoyed your winter break and are excited for classes to start next week. Please remember to pay attention to upcoming dates and deadlines.
New Office Hours

Please note that as of January 8, the Faculty of Arts and Science will be open over lunch. This means that our office will be open from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm daily.

If you are hoping to speak to someone about academic advice, please note the first two weeks of the winter term (January 8 - 19) are very busy in our office and you may be faced with long lines. We understand that many of you are trying to make course decisions by the add / drop deadline date (January 19), but if your questions can wait until after January 19, our lineups will be much shorter.

Note that from January 8 - 12, all advising will be on a first-come; first served basis.  If you wish to speak with an Academic Advisor, you will need to come in to our office and we will add your name to our list. Our office doors open at 8:30 am so come early!  The aim of first-come; first-served advising is to help as many students as we can during this week which means that these appointments should be brief (10 to 15 minutes). See our Winter Term FAQs page for more information on how academic advising will work for the next two weeks.

We are also excited to announce a new Live Chat feature on our website that may help get your questions answered if you're hoping to avoid lineups. Please see more about this below.
New Live Chat Feature on Arts and Science Website

The Queen's Arts and Science website is now using Live Chat, a feature that allows people browsing our website to chat with Arts and Science representatives through live support. So if you have a question you're hoping to get answered and want to avoid waiting in line, give it a try!
Winter Term FAQs

Have questions about the Winter Term? Please see the list below for answers to commonly asked questions.

When can I add a winter term class?
You can add winter term classes now.  The deadline to add a winter term class is January 19, 2018.  This is also the deadline date to drop a winter term class without financial penalty.

How much money will I get back if I drop a class?
If you drop a winter term class by January 19, you will receive a full refund.  If you drop between January 20 and February 2, you will receive a 50% refund.  If you drop between February 3 and March 2nd, you will receive a 25% refund.

When is the last day I can drop a winter term class or a full year class?
The deadline date to drop winter term classes and full year classes is March 2nd.

How do I change sections of my full year course?
If you want to change your lecture, lab or tutorial section of a full year class, you need to get permission from the department offering the class.  DO NOT attempt to do this yourself on SOLUS as you could mistakenly drop the class.

I am in first year and need some help with my courses / schedule. Who can I talk to?
First-year students can stop by our office in Dunning Hall anytime between 9 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday from January 8 - 19  to speak with a Peer Academic Advisor. The PASS advisors get quite busy during the first two weeks of term, so we recommend that you get to the office early for assistance.

The class I want to enrol in is full. Can I still enrol in it?
We know how disappointing this can be but we cannot over-enrol any classes.  Our course enrolment capacities are based on room size and strict fire code regulations which means we cannot over-enrol any classes.  However, if there is a waitlist available, you can add yourself to the waitlist by selecting "Wait List if Class is Full" when you add it to your shopping cart.

How can I add myself to a waitlist?
Add yourself to the waitlist by selecting "Wait List if Class is Full" when you add the course to your shopping cart. Make sure you proceed to "Finish Enrolling." To view your status on the waitlist, look under "My Class Schedule" (list view).

Note that waitlists are not available for online courses. If you find that an on-campus course that should have a waitlist is showing up as Closed, this means that both the course and the waitlist are at capacity and as such you won't be able to add yourself to the list.  For more information on waiting lists, please see https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/class-selection

Degree Check-in Station

Wondering if you're on track to graduate? Feel free to drop by our degree check-in station in Dunning Room 135 (in the Arts and Science Faculty office) between 8:30 am - noon and 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm from January 8 - 19. Note that the degree check-in station is not open over lunch.

You can also run an Academic Advisement Report to see what you still need to complete in order to meet your degree requirements. Watch the video below to learn how to do this.
