Dear Friends:
With Spring Break behind us and Spring Tourism season in full swing, we are reminded how important it is for our own DC students to get to experience our member's museums, theaters and cultural venues.
Our collective work for DC students, is vital and essential. We are reminded how important it is for us as a community to support each other to ensure that students have sustained access to transformative high-quality arts and humanities experiences and programs. Our most sincere gratitude to each of you who collectively work with us to bring education opportunities to DC public and public charter school students. Thanks to our membership and program committees, we're looking at our Collective Impact and how we can best serve you our community of practice. We look forward to sharing more at our next members meeting.

Hope from The Hill: Federal Arts Funding to Receive a Boost in the
New FY2017 Budget!
Encouraging news thanks to our friends at
Arts Action Fund
"Congress has reached a bipartisan agreement on a bill to fund the nation's federal agencies and programs for the remaining balance of the current FY2017 fiscal year, which ends on September 30, 2017. None of the nation's arts and cultural agencies nor programs incurred a budget cut. In fact, many of them received funding increases for this year"
Next Steps:
- FY2017: Both chambers of Congress will next vote on this bipartisan Omnibus Appropriations bill before it proceeds to the President's desk for him to sign/veto by this Friday, May 5th. Despite the President recently proposing funding cuts to many of these cultural programs (i.e. $15 million cut to NEA), it appears that he will sign the bill.
- FY2018: Please note that the FY2018 appropriations bill for funding the federal government from October 1, 2017 through September 30, 2018 is still very much in play and going through the legislative process. This is the bill that the President recommended eliminating the NEA, NEH, IMLS, CPB, etc. We remain focused on getting all of these agencies fully funded as well in the coming months.

NEW and improved data collection method for the
School Year 2015-2016 Members Map!
As you may know, we've released the data collection for the 2015-2016 school year's Members Mapping Project. We need the whole arts and humanities education community to participate!
Collective Impact | Collaborative Effect
The goal of the DC Collaborative's Members Mapping Project is to illustrate our members' individual as well as our community's collective reach among DC public and public charter schools. This data will help to seed our community's Collective Impact work featuring shared measurements and collective voice, and it will provide information essential in our advocacy efforts. While we understand this is a detailed request - it is so very important for all of us to participate. Making the case for our community in helping to serve all DC students is only as good as the data that you provide.
This is a resource for your organization to show your outreach through a visual representation of your educational offerings to DC's public school system. You could use the map as a development tool to assist you in advocating for support.
What Info Do We Need?
As with previous years, we are collecting information on all of the programs/workshops that your organization provides to DC Public School and Public Charter School students and teachers for the 2015-2016 school year. This includes both in-school (field-trips and residencies that take place during school hours), and after-school or summer programs, along with professional development opportunities. We will be collecting 16-17 School year info as soon as this school year concludes!
We are collecting additional information on which teaching artists your organization works with and we are creating a new community calendar.

A Trip to Freer|Sackler for the "Look and Discover Museum Tour"

On March 30th, Karen Daniels and her 1st and 2nd grade classes from Fillmore Arts Center (pictured above) went on the Look and Discover Museum Tour at the Freer|Sackler Museum. This program is part of our Arts and Humanities for Every Student Program March Lottery and runs through the end of the school year.
In this program, students spent time exploring the museum's gallery looking closely at artworks depicting various styles and cultural traditions from the permanent collection. They also took a look at Japanese paintings from the special exhibition
Inventing Utamaro: A Japanese Masterpiece Rediscovered (April 8-July 9, 2017). The lively and engaging docents helped students describe what they saw and consider how the elements of art-line, color, shape, pattern, etc.-helps us to understand individual artworks and the cultures that produced them.

Programming Committee
The Programming Committee is open to members, partners and educators. The Committee will assist the DC Collaborative team in furthering their mission of equity and access to quality arts and humanities education for all students and teachers in the DC public education system (traditional and public charter). The Programming Committee will analyze and evaluate the quality of arts and humanities education experiences, develop opportunities for mentorship and program improvement and inform the Arts and Humanities for Every Student policies and procedures.

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is open to members and partners of the DC Collaborative and will assist the DC Collaborative team in increasing services for membership by recommending content and helping to lead parts of membership meetings and content forums; participating in developing advocacy messaging; analyzing membership categories and dues structure; exploring the benefits and responsibilities of membership; increasing membership and nurturing membership renewal; and ensuring that general membership is representative of organizations located in all wards of the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, and Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland who are serving DC Public and Public Charter School students and teachers.

Lorraine S. Dreyfuss Theater Education Fund Application
Applications Due June 1, 2017
The Lorraine S. Dreyfuss Theater Education Fund aims
to promote arts engagement among early career artists and arts professionals. Arts organizations of all disciplines (including, but not limited to theater) with a strong history of training emerging artists and arts professionals through either classroom training or pre-professional internship programs are encouraged to apply for up to two years of funding. Organizations will then
bestow scholarships upon recipients who otherwise would not be able to be part of their programs.
To apply, please submit up to two pages describing why
your organization needs this financial support, including a brief history of education efforts and programs at your organization, and
the selection process of the scholarship recipients. Organizations must be based in the DMV region.

DCPS Arts Updates |

DCPS Music Festival on Millennium Stage
Volunteer Today!
More than 60 ensembles comprised of over 1600 students and representing 30 schools will perform on the Millennium Stages at the Kennedy Center for the 2017 DCPS Music Festival. This three day event bring people together from across the city to celebrate the work of teachers and students in music education. Ensembles perform for a panel of professionals and are evaluated based on their technicality and creativity of their performance. Ensembles range from ukulele to orchestra, performing works from Bach to rap.
