Greetings art educators! We have returned to our classrooms, studios, creative spaces, and most importantly our students! 2017 is in full swing and
off to an immensely exciting and busy start! The Florida Art Education Association held their annual board meeting the end of January and prepared for the upcoming calendar year and beyond. We had an extremely productive meeting focused on the mission of the organization and how to best serve our members. Several marvelous ideas were brought to the table and we look forward to incorporating the new ideas while fine tuning our current programs.
Save the date for the 65th Annual FAEA Conference October 19th-22nd
in St. Petersburg, Florida. The theme for this year's conference is The Power of Art and plans are moving forward to make sure it meets your every expectation!
Congratulations to Linhdan Do (student) and Judy Elkins (teacher) from South Dade Senior High School. Linhdan's submission was selected as the winner of the 2017 Youth Art Month Flag Design Competition. The artwork will be transformed into a flag and displayed at the 2017 NAEA Conference in New York, NY. Look for the Florida Youth Art Month Flag and student art exhibition in the commercial exhibition hall.
We hope to see Florida well represented at the upcoming National Art Education Association Convention. The Convention will be held March 2-4 in New York City. Your NAEA Convention registration gives you access to hundreds of concurrent sessions presented by art education professionals from all over the world! Additionally, you can choose to enhance your experience by purchasing tickets for special workshops, events, and tours.
Check out FAEA's Facebook page for details of our annual group photograph. If you are presenting at NAEA, please email

It is time for the 2017 K-12 Student Art Assessment and Virtual Exhibition. Submissions will be accepted through April 10, 2017. You don't want your students to miss the opportunity to be a part of this digital exhibition. Sargent Art will generously sponsor prizes. Check out the new prize structure for 2017 including a cash prize for the overall winning student and classroom art supplies for the overall winning teacher.
Beginning next month, FAEA will accept
nominations for the 2018 Board of Directors. FAEA is seeking dedicated members with exceptional leadership skills who are willing to step into this respected role. Members who serve on the board of directors have a wonderful opportunity to help make important decisions and shape the future of FAEA. Details and directions for nominations will be announced in the next few weeks.
Next month we celebrate Youth Art Month! Participating in Youth Art Month is a great way to advocate for arts education. Although Youth Art Month is celebrated during the month of March, art achievements from any time of the year deserve recognition. Celebrations can be as simple as a single class learning activity that focuses attention to the value of arts or celebrations can involve collaborations which result in multi-school art exhibits. Please send a picture, description, or article about YAM to your FAEA Division Director. We will feature Youth Art Month activities on our social media outlets next month.
The next few months are filled with exhibitions, professional development, and celebrations! Be sure to check your email, follow us on social media, and read all communication from your Division Director because FAEA has many enticing programs, events, and opportunities forthcoming.
