Book Reviews
Dangerous Ends
By Alex Segura
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
In this third in Alex Segura's Pete Fernandez Mystery series, Fernandez has settled into an easy, if somewhat boring life as a P.I.The days of chasing murderous killers are behind him. Or are they?
Pete hesitates when his partner Kathy Bentley approaches him with a potential new client, because the case involves Gaspar Varela, a former Miami police officer serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife. The client, Varela's daughter, supported her father's claims of innocence.
As Pete and Kathy wade into the case, they also find themselves in the crosshairs of Los Enfermos, a bloodthirsty gang of pro-Castro killers and drug dealers.  They find themselves entangled in something even older and more surprising--a bloody, political hit ordered by Fidel Castro himself, that left a still-healing scar on Pete--and his dead father's--past.
Dangerous Ends is a fast-paced, engaging read with memorable characters, a twisty plot, a climax complete with a machete, and a setting so well-described that it could be an additional character. This reader was thoroughly absorbed in the story from page one.  PGW, Signed: 24.99

Proving Ground
By Peter Blauner
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
Finally, after over a decade, a new crime thriller from Peter Blauner.  The story opens with Natty "Dread" Dresden coming to NYC for his father's funeral, a murder victim.
Natty is an army veteran with both medals and scars from his service in Iraq.  He enlisted partly as a reaction to his father David, a civil rights attorney leaning heavily to the left.  Despite the strong father and son rift, Natty becomes involved in the murder investigation.
Complications multiply due to David Dresden's focus on past lawsuits against the police department and a current case involving the FBI.  Ben Grimaldi, David's lifelong friend and law partner, has always been close with Natty, but his alliances come into question as well.
Lourdes Robles, a rising star in the detective division, is partnered with veteran detective Sully, who will retire once the murder investigation is done.  Add in a PTSD psychologist with her own demons, Natty's mother with her own secrets and several supporting characters, for a wonderfully strong cast of characters that drives the story with just enough dialog.
Proving Ground is a top notch urban crime thriller, written in Mr. Blauner's fine style.  It is billed as the first in the Lourdes Robles series, so this reader is hoping that there will not be another 10 year wait for Mr. Blauner's next book.
Highly recommended.  If you are a fan of Dennis Lehane, Richard Price or Don Winslow, start reading immediately! Minotaur 25.99

Imperfect Defense
By Gregg E. Brickman
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
Sophia Burgess, an emergency department nurse, discovers the battered body of her elderly friend, Millie Peers, then cares for Ralph Hoffman, a hard-of-hearing and blind senior who may have been pushed down a flight of steps.
Ralph lives with his daughter Melinda Silebi, her husband Franco, and their adult son, Gabriel. Franco, a powerful businessman and a hospital board member, says Ralph fell attempting to go downstairs without help. Later, she learns that Ralph's wife, Lorraine, an Alzheimer's victim, tumbled down the same stairs to her death a few months earlier.
While Detective Ray Stone, Sophia's on-again, off-again fiancé, investigates Millie's murder, Sophia becomes convinced someone in Ralph's family abused him.
As the tale unfolds, Sophia confronts one stone wall after another, as forces block her access to information and spur her desire to uncover the truth. This makes for an compelling story.
Gregg Brickman has mastered all the tools for keeping the reader riveted. Her characters are engaging and believable. Her depiction of the hospital setting is informed and enhanced by her years in nursing. Brickman writes what she knows and does it well. The police procedural aspects are likewise well-portrayed. The relationship between Sophia and Ray is complex and enjoyable to read. It is a privilege and a pleasure see these two characters in their work and at home. As the story builds to its climax, so does the reader's appreciation of Gregg Brickman's talents.
Highly recommended. Signed: 12.99

Justice Secured
By Randy Rawls
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
Out of curiosity, Josh Hawkins, South Florida PI and ex-Army Special Forces officer, responds to a strange summons and learns that an undercover government task force wants him to pursue an "untouchable" and "invisible" crime lord. Josh's task: make him disappear, technique not to be questioned. Josh resents the assumption that he is an assassin-for-hire, but loyalty to his government drives him to accept. When the crime lord learns of Josh's mission, the odds change, turning Josh into both the hunter and the hunted. In this war between good and evil, is compassion to be ignored?
Randy Rawls is a writer whose work shines especially bright when his protagonist is faced with a conflict. There, the author shows us, not only the tension building in the plot, but the character's reactions to it. In Justice Secured, Hawkins is faced with just such a conflict, and Randy Rawls displays Hawkins' dilemma and its resolution with great finesse.
Also worth noting are Rawls' depictions of the characters, who seem to leap from the page. Although Rawls takes the reader into a world few have experienced, his "people" are lifelike and intriguing to follow through the book. His description brings the South Florida setting to life as well.
If you are seeking a suspenseful read with believable characters and an intriguing plot, Justice Secured is for you. Signed: 12.99
