Forum showcases student contributions to water and food security
The Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute hosted its third annual Research Forum on May 11 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus Union. Sixteen University of Nebraska graduate and undergraduate students provided engaging presentations highlighting the impacts and outcomes of their research projects over the past year. The projects included developing hybrid wheat, conserving water in meat processing, investigating the impacts of agricultural runoff in larval fish, mitigating the risk of waterborne illness in Tanzania, using wireless underground sensors for real-time precision agriculture, creative storytelling for conservation and science literacy, examining the political complexities of water networks and more. The institute's student support program provides funding to DWFI Faculty Fellows advising students who are working on projects that align with the institute's mission to help ensure a more water and food secure world. Thank you to all of the students, staff, faculty and others who participated in this year's event.

View the presentations on DWFI's new SlideShare platform, as well as photos from the forum on Facebook.
Nebraska researchers join national team studying psychology of water use
Six University of Nebraska researchers will join colleagues at Penn State University, Arizona State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service to develop a model for engaging communities and stakeholders to ensure adequate supplies of good-quality water both for and from agriculture. The USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture has awar ded $2.2 million for the first year of a planned four-year, $5 million project to the 18 researchers involved.

Nebraska researchers participating in the study include:
  • Chittaranjan Ray, director, Nebraska Water Center
  • Mark Burbach, environmental scientist, UNL School of Natural Resources
  • Jessica Grosskopf, crops-economic risk management extension educator, Panhandle Research and Extension Center, Scottsbluff, Nebraska
  • Faculty Fellow Lilyan Fulginiti, agricultural economist, UNL Department of Agricultural Economics
  • Faculty Fellow Richard Perrin, agricultural economist, UNL Department of Agricultural Economics
  • Faculty Fellow Daran Rudnick, irrigation management specialist, UNL Department of Biological Systems Engineering
