Rector's Ramblings

In the midst of this season of graduations, I had one of my own. I officially graduated from physical therapy after seven weeks of therapy for tennis elbow! There wasn't a ceremony, nor were there any caps or tassels in sight, but I did get a t-shirt. ...And the therapist called it "graduating," so that must mean I did, right?

Actually, I'm quite pleased to have graduated and that the elbow is feeling better. I don't play tennis, but a combination of overworking the arm muscles while paddling and a sharp crack on the elbow last year, led to a year of pain and permanent damage. If you noticed a weakening of my hand-shaking grip on Sunday mornings over the last year, that was the reason. The before and after strength tests of my grip are pretty dramatic. Shaking hands on Sundays was one of the most painful parts of the whole ordeal. I avoided using my right arm for most things, but shaking hands with the left wasn't going to work.

Worship

Music Weekend With Marty Haugen

May began on a high note when liturgical composer Marty Haugen came to Christ Church for the weekend of May 5-7. From the X Church style worship service on Friday, through the Saturday discussions and workshops, to the Sunday morning worship services in the Parish Hall and Church, moving, thoughtful and evocative music was presented and enjoyed by all who heard it. Photos from the weekend may be found here.

Busy Bags Are Here!
Busy bags are now available for your young children to enjoy during our Sunday services. Just pick up a bag from the basket in the church, let your children explore the contents and return the bag at the end of the service.

Outreach

Help Us Recognize the Street Beat Graduates of 2017
This year there are nine graduates from Safe Harbor's Street Beat program! Street Beat is an outreach and support program for teens living on the streets in which the y oung people receive help completing their education, planning for careers and maintaining housing. Street Beat's mission is to increase young people's safety, well-being and self-sufficiency and to help them build permanent connections with caring adults with the goal of getting off the streets.

Anyone wanting to help celebrate these kids can do so by giving them graduation cards. Some of them are going to college, others into the military and one to technical school. The best route for a gift for them is a gift card, if anyone wants to include a little something in the graduation cards.  Gift cards from Walmart or Target would be most useful.

Safe Harbor is having their graduation party on Thursday, May 18th at  6:00 pm. We  will deliver the cards that we collect between now and then to the party organizers. Any cards that come in after the party will be delivered to them in the weeks to come. You may drop off graduation cards to the church office in the Parish House.

Here is the list of this year's graduates:

Help Wanted - And Needed
GEM (Glynn Episcopal Ministries) needs your help with our summer reading and  meal pack program at St. Athanasius. Each Friday, beginning on June 2, GEM will host  an afternoon of fun, food, and reading for children in the St. Athanasius neighborhood.  In addition to a meal pack similar to those distributed each week-end at schools,  children will receive a light supper, and will be able to select free books to take home.  Many of these children have no books in their homes. It is thrilling to see their excitement about the books that they can chose. So - GEM needs books - gently used or new. Please bring them to the Christ Church Parish Hall. And - GEM needs YOU.  Please consider volunteering to help with activities for one Friday or for many. Time for worker bees is from 4 to 6 pm. Blessings and fun will be unlimited. For questions and to sign up to help, please contact Becky Matthews at 912-268-2689.

Handmade for the Hungry

Glynn Visual Arts supports our local food bank, America's Second Harvest, through their pottery program in which they offer classes for students to come in & make a bowl then donate it to the Handmade for the Hungry/Empty Bowl Project. America's Second Harvest is instrumental in providing food for the Backpack Buddies program.*

After the bowls are made and donated, the project culminates with a soup dinner at GVA on October 17th, 2017 in which individuals may come in & buy a hand made bowl to take home & receive a soup dinner & all the fixin's. All proceeds for sales of the bowls & dinner are donated to America's Second Harvest.

All classes are on a Tuesday evenings,  6:00 - 7:30 pm, June 13th or 20th,  July 11th or 18th and
Aug 15th or 22nd.

Cost:  $25 per person and all  materials are included.
To pre-register for classes, click here.

*Since May 2015, the Christ Church Backpack Buddies have placed 154 orders totaling 139,292 pounds of food!  We obviously could not operate this program without Second Harvest!!

Senior Adult Vacation Bible School
Senior Adult Vacation Bible School is coming to Epworth By The Sea from May 22 - 25. We invite the members of Christ Church to join with us for this event. Ed Kilbourne is a very popular leader and we look forward to his unique brand of ministry.
Over the years Ed has been recognized and acclaimed for his ability to use his gifts as a musician and communicator in concert and worship settings. Following his graduation from seminary, Ed set out on a professional career, making over 8,000 appearances during the last 40 years in every region of the country. He has over 23 recordings.  Lutheran Bishop of the South Carolina Synod, David Donges, introduces Ed as a cross between Garrison Keillor and Jimmy Buffett.
Attached is information for the full program. Monday evening's concert, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings sessions are open to commuters. Fee for the 4 sessions is $100. Registration is required. Please call Epworth at 912-638-8688.
