From the Board Chair, Tom Denio
Hello fellow members and friends of 2U. If you did not open Monday's e-mail from Rev. Robersmith, please start there. Given the news, it seems appropriate to make two points. First, why do UU (and some other) churches hire interim ministers instead of moving right along and choosing a new settled minister? Second, this is an important time for all of us to pull together.

First, the short answer is because it works. Per the UUA, "Congregations doing at least an 18 or 24 month interim have a much greater success rate (90%) at calling a minister following their interim than congregations doing only a single year of interim ministry (56%)."

From the Transitional Ministry Handbook -

For twenty-five years now Unitarian Universalist congregations, many of the mainline Protestant denominations, and synagogues of all traditions have depended on interim ministry to deal with the phenomenon of transition. They have done so largely in response to an important Alban Institute study which established the fact that congregations not hiring an intentional interim minister during a ministerial transition often find themselves having called an "unintentional interim minister" instead. At best the next minister will have heavy going. At worst the minister will not last. And indeed, among Unitarian Universalist congregations the practice of hiring an interim minister following a ministerial departure is almost universal.

... interim ministers both carry out the normal responsibilities of congregational ministry, including worship and pastoral care, and also assist the congregation in addressing the following interim tasks:
  • claiming and honoring its past and engaging and acknowledging its grief and conflicts
  • recognizing its unique identity and its strengths, needs, and challenges
  • understanding the appropriate leadership roles of minister(s), church staff, and lay leaders and navigating the shifts in leadership that may accompany times of transition
  • renewing its vision, strengthening its stewardship, preparing for new growth and new professional leadership, ready to embrace the future with anticipation and zest
  • making appropriate use of regional, UUA, and other outside resources
Regarding the second point, imagine church life and our collective involvement in the larger community as a giant mural or tapestry (for you weavers). Many painters, brush strokes, colors, and assemblers of scaffolding are needed to design and create the mural. It is a mural that is always evolving and changing as faded sections are repainted and completely new parts of the wall are opened up. If the minister is our chief artist, we now must all pitch in to advance the beautiful painting and engage the new lead artist. Doing so will enrich the work and ourselves. If Michelangelo had left Italy in 1509, do you think the church would have stopped work on the Sistine chapel ceiling? Of course not! And neither should we! Whether it is something like helping with 2U's hospitality, yardwork day on Saturday, June 3, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, adding good cheer to the senior luncheon, or continuing your work on a particular committee, please pitch in!

See you at church! Oh, and this Sunday is our Annual Meeting right after the service. Lunch will be provided.
2U  Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 21
Please plan to join us for our annual 2U congregational business meeting after service on Sunday, May 21 in the sanctuary.

As per one of the seven principles of Unitarian Universalism, "the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large," the annual meeting is the time in the life of our congregation when we gather to exercise the democratic process in our church. Additionally, our church bylaws state that it is the member's "right and responsibility to contribute to the democratic life in the community." In order to conduct the business of the congregation, there must be a quorum (25%) of members present. Come and be a part of our church celebration and the planning for next year!

The purpose of the meeting is to:
  • Provide a review of the 2016-17 financial status and accomplishments
  • Approve the proposed 2017-18 church budget
  • Elect new church leaders
LUNCH WILL BE SERVED! SO, DON'T BE LATE!

Celebration Luncheon on Sunday, June 4th!
Please stay after the service on Sunday, June 4th for a luncheon to celebrate the successful completion of the 2017-18 2U canvass! We will have a delicious brunch (including vegetarian food) that you will not want to miss.

The planning team is requesting support for clean-up after the event - please contact Maureen King at [email protected] if you are available for clean-up, or if you would like further information about the luncheon.
2U Yard Days!
The growing season is upon us and that means: it's time to dig in the dirt at 2U! Mostly, we'll be weeding. Please join us for yard days on Saturday, June 3 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and/or on Sunday, June 4 following the service. Bring your gardening gloves and weed diggers if you have them. All ages are welcome. Stay tuned for additional yard days later in the summer. Contact Monica Drane at 312.550.3412 with questions.
Parking at 2U
Parking on Sundays at Illinois Masonic has now changed! Please use the new parking stickers located in the red folder at the Welcome Table to use on your parking receipt when exiting from the parking lot. Please see someone at the Welcome Table on Sundays if you have any questions!
Gay Pride Sunday at 2U
2U will be a busy church this June 25th! The Lemonade stand out front, the parade around the corner, and our service in the sanctuary. Rather than making you choose, we will be providing a simplified service that will Charge the congregation to take our values out into the world. To be involved in presenting this service, email [email protected] . To participate in the lemonade stand in front of the building, email [email protected] .
World Music Concert Series at 2U!
2U is pleased to offer our first World Music Concert Series! With performances by Chicago World Music Chorus, Ensemble Alioni, and Marianne Parker (produced by Crossing Borders Music), this series will bring delightful and powerful music to all audiences. The concerts will be held in the congregation's sanctuary at 656 W. Barry Ave. in Chicago, offering a historic and acoustically rich setting for traditional and composed music from around the world. All concerts are free!

Sunday, May 7th at 5:30 pm
Chicago World Music Chorus

We bring you South African songs of protest and celebration; traditional and modern songs from Caucasus Georgia, Cuba and Zambia, a Turkish Sephardic folk song, and traditional and modern American shape note hymns, including Far Heaven - a wonderful Don Jamison re-imagining of an Issac Watts text.

The 50-strong, non-auditioned Chicago World Music Chorus, directed by Mollie Stone and Patty Cuyler, spans ages from teens to eighty. We meet once a month at 2U and boast singers from throughout Chicago. Our one-set concert will be under one hour in length.

Sunday, May 21st at 3 pm
Ensemble Alioni

Ensemble Alioni is a vocal ensemble founded in 2008 with the purpose of researching and sharing the ancient choral folk music traditions of the Republic of Georgia through performing and teaching. Ensemble Alioni has performed at the Chicago World Music Festival, the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival, the Museum of Science and Industry's "Christmas Around the World" series, and for academic gatherings at DePaul University and the University of Chicago. Georgian polyphonic singing has been included by the United Nations on their World List of Intangible Masterpieces of Humanity. Alioni periodically hosts Georgian music parties and teaches songs, spreading awareness of these unique musical treasures. Visit Ensemble Alioni, learn more about us and hear song samples at alioni.org .

Meditation and Passion: Uncovering Piano Masterworks of Haiti

Meditation and Passion: Uncovering Piano Masterworks of Haiti  will allow Chicagoans to discover Haitian piano music, a repertoire unknown to all but a handful of scholars for the last century. Pianist Marianne Parker will perform the program, bringing to life the fruits of decades of scholarly work. The program will include romantic and modernist works by Emile Desamours, Ludovic Lamothe (known as "Black Chopin"), Edmond Saintonge, and Carmen Brouard.

We hope to see you there!
Thanks from the Guests At Your Table
This message is my huge thanks, on behalf of the UUSC, to the donors to the Guest at Your Table program of the Unitarian- Universalist Service Committee this winter. (Also: apologies for my delay, both in this report and in getting your checks to UUSC. I'm mailing the checks and their report on 5/4/2017. If there is any difficulty getting your check honored, which I doubt will happen, the UUSC will unfortunately contact you; you can yell at me when you see me.)

The total raised by 2U donors was $397.05 That is about ten times the amount we have raised in each of the past three years. Special thanks for her extra efforts go to Alicia Obando, our Life Long Learning staff, for making GAYT a program that could touch families with children as well everyone else. Anyone who gave $40 or more should begin this year to receive periodic UUSC newsletters. Thank you for supporting this multi-faceted UU expression of our principles.

- Linda Groetzinger
Family Choir at 2U
The purpose of the Family Choir is to promote unity through music. We will perform unison music, and music with simple harmonies, which will allow voices of all abilities and ages to sing together. Every person is invited to sing in the Family Choir: Children do not have to have adults in order to sing, and adults don't have to have children to sing. The Family Choir will be singing two songs on May 28 for the RE worship service. We will have 3 rehearsals, each for 15 minutes following worship on May 7, 14, and 21.
Thanks,
Amanda Thomas, Director of Music
March to Springfield to Protest Budget Crisis
Illinois' budget crisis is destroying the pillars of our society  -- public education and our social safety net. That's why ONE Northside and Fair Economy Illinois are marching from Chicago to Springfield. We're marching to tell our state elected officials to do their job: pass an Illinois budget that puts people and the planet first!

We have a bold vision for a budget that invests in communities throughout Illinois and invests in the health of our planet. If millionaires, big corporations, and the big banks paid their fair share in taxes, we would have more than enough money to fully fund the services and programs we need and deserve.

Join us for the kick off event on May 15th at noon at the Thompson Center and the closing day of action on May 30th in Springfield.

Sign up here  < https://tinyurl.com/march2springfieldONS > to join us. Learn more about the march at  marchtospringfield.org  and on our  facebook page . Any other questions? Contact Hannah at  [email protected].

Can't make the march and want to help? You can donate here to help cover the cost of food for people on the march.

Thank you for your help.
2U Member Survey
In an effort to get to know our congregants better, and to learn what motivates you to be a part of the 2U community, the Fundraising and Marketing committee is launching a survey. This survey asks basic demographic information about you and your household members (this information will be kept private), as well as questions regarding your training, work and volunteer involvement, and the activities that are of interest to you at Second Unitarian Church.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the survey - it will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

If you have any questions about the content of the survey, you may reach out to Susan Zeigler at [email protected].
