I somehow managed to catch a cold this last week. Given a choice, I would rather have let it go. It always surprises me how exhausting it is to have a cold.
I'm right in the middle of a
lot of new product reviews. As you know, Apple released the new MacBook Pro laptop a couple of weeks ago. I borrowed a brand-new 15" unit from a friend and now I'm in the process of looking at new hardware from:
- Promise Technology
- OWC
- Highpoint Technology
- And cool new software from NewBlueFX and Audio Network
The shift to USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 has deep implications for media pros and I'm looking forward to writing what I learn in the next couple of newsletters.
Thinking of that, in last week's webinar -
Ask Larry Anything - I did an
update on HDR. The more I learn about high dynamic range media and its components of high-resolution, wide color gamut and greater dynamic range, the more complicated it gets. In spite of marketing which makes it seem that HDR is already here, full support for HDR will be a long, evolving process; probably taking 2-3 years. We are headed in the right direction, but we are a long way from achieving the final goal.
To that end, I created a short video slide show that describes where we are in the transition into HDR, specifically covering how the latest versions of FCP X and Premiere handle this extended range media. There were several things I learned that surprised me, so I recommend you watch the video - it takes 8 minutes - and will help put this whole issue into a current perspective.
And, unlike 3D and VR, I think HDR will last for the long-term. But it won't get here quickly.
Webinars, by the way, are taking a holiday break. We'll return with new material on Wednesday, Jan. 4. As always, I'll let you know what we are covering in upcoming newsletters.
Enjoy the season! I'll chat with you next week. In the meantime, edit well.
