Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend in Lakeside Chautauqua
Over Memorial Day weekend, join us in Lakeside Chautauqua as we remember the sacrifices of U.S. military men and women and honor those retired and in active duty. Lakeside will also kick off the summer Chautauqua experience with several religious, educational, cultural and recreational programs.
 
A schedule of events is listed below. The holiday weekend also includes full service hotels, complimentary shuttles and recreational activities, such as miniature golf, shuffleboard, tennis and a small children's pool and splash park. Most businesses will be open.
The Drowsy Lads 
8:15 p.m. Friday, May 26
Hoover Auditorium

Lakeside's first concert of the summer will feature The Drowsy Lads, an Irish band founded in 2003 that has become a musical favorite in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio. The group creates their own spirited arrangements and original compositions with a mix of bluegrass and classical music.
"Beauty and the Beast" (PG)

Movie Tickets: $7/adult, $3/youth (under age 12) 

Orchestra Hall will feature "Beauty and the Beast," a live-action drama full of adventure for fans of the original animated film. After her father goes missing, Belle (Emma Watson) leaves her small village in search of him and finds a dark, forbidding castle. Inside resides Beast (Dan Stevens), a young prince who was cursed and can only be freed by true love. With the help of some living antiques, also imprisoned from the curse, Belle comes to learn that true beauty is found within. (129 mins)   
Master Planning Presentation & Workshop

Lakeside Chautauqua is conducting a formal master plan with MKSK, an urban design, landscape architecture and planning firm. All are invited to an Introduction & Ideas Workshop to provide ideas and feedback for the planning process. This will ensure that Lakeside has future programming spaces, recreational facilities, green spaces, accommodations, retail, transportation and parking solutions, as well as the best use of its existing buildings.
Lakeside Plant Sale & Gardening Demonstrations

Pedestrian Walkway on Walnut Avenue, between Second & Third Streets
   
The Lakeside Plant Sale will feature a large selection of plants to enhance shady nooks and others that thrive in garden hot spots. Annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, colorful hanging baskets, pots and pre-planted container gardens will be for sale. Lakeside will also be selling the same fertilizer that the Grounds Department uses. All proceeds will help keep the Lakeside grounds beautiful throughout the summer.
 
In addition to the plant sale, there will be one-hour gardening demonstrations provided by Corso's Flower & Garden Center, Barnes Nursery and Lakeside Chautauqua's Master Gardener, Loretta Wilken.  
Family Discovery Program: Monarch Madness

Rhein Center

Stop by the Rhein Center to learn about butterfly gardens and take part in activities to promote the habitats of the endangered monarch butterfly. 
 
Activities for all ages include making a plantable butterfly that will grow flowers and attract butterflies, painting a "resting rock" to attract butterflies to muddy spots, finger (and toe) painting a butterfly picture, making a butterfly treat and helping to plant Lakeside's Butterfly Garden.
Always ABBA

Join the band Always ABBA for a special ABBA tribute concert in Hoover Auditorium. Forty years after their debut, ABBA continues to spark an undeniable vitality in audiences of all ages with their timeless tunes, including "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me," "Super Trouper" and "Mamma Mia."
Hoover Community Worship Service & Additional Sunday Worship Services

The Rev. Doug Johns will serve as guest preacher at the Hoover Community Worship Service over the holiday weekend. His sermon, titled "Who am I?," is based on Jeremiah 1:4-40 and John 15:16-17. Children's Church will also be available. The guest preacher is supported by Bob & Becky Brymer.
 
The names of those buried in the Memorial Garden at Chautauqua Park, and those who have died during the 2016-2017 year, will be read aloud during the service.
 
In addition to the Hoover Community Worship Service, the Pavilion East Deck will hold Dockside Worship with Eucharist, led by the Rev. Irwin Jennings, at 8:30 a.m. The Lakeside United Methodist Church will also hold a service, led by the Rev. Vernon Shepherd, at 9 a.m.
 
For those who wish to attend worship, a complimentary Church Pass may be obtained from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday; valid until 3 p.m. The pass includes admittance for guests and auto.
Lakeside Heritage Society: "The War Memorials: Monuments to Freedom"

Chautauqua Hall 

Following a brief remembrance of Marblehead Peninsula men who gave their lives fighting for our country, the Lakeside Heritage Society will feature The History Channel film "The War Memorials: Monuments to Freedom" (45 mins). This 1994 film provides a historical overview of Arlington National Cemetery, the Iwo Jima monument and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
Northern Cincinnati Youth Orchestra

Steele Memorial Bandstand/Gazebo

The Northern Cincinnati Youth Orchestra will perform a special Concert in the Park at the Steele Memorial Bandstand/Gazebo. Their repertoire is varied, embracing both classical and alternative styles of music while maintaining a level of excellence. The orchestra is conducted by co-founder Marva Rasmussen.
The Grass Roots

Hoover Auditorium

As a rock & roll band, The Grass Roots helped define the heart of radio during the 1960s and 1970s with their most popular hits, "Midnight Confessions," "Sooner or Later" and "Two Divided by Love." As members of the band have come and gone, current members now travel the country touring and paying homage to the original band.
Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony

Second Street & Pavilion Circle

This year, Lakeside Chautauqua will host the peninsula's Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony. The parade will begin at Central Avenue and Fifth Street, travel north on Central Avenue, west on Second Street and proceed to Pavilion Circle, located in Central Park, where the Memorial Day Ceremony will take place. The rain location for the ceremony is Orchestra Hall.
  
There is no charge for admission to enter Lakeside Chautauqua or for parking for the Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony. Guests may enter the gates between 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Admission & Parking
The Lakeside Chautauqua gates will be in operation from 7 a.m. Friday, May 26 until 7 p.m. Monday, May 29. A Daily Chautauqua Pass, which is a reduced price for Memorial Day weekend, is required to enter the grounds; $14.75/adult and $9.25/teen (ages 13-18) per day. Season Chautauqua Passes are also available.
 
Children age 12 and under and guests over the age of 90 are always free, but require complimentary passes, which are available upon entering the gates of Lakeside. A Partial Day Chautauqua Pass (valid 3 hours) is also offered for $7.50.
 
A Daily Auto Pass is required for Memorial Day weekend. To park on the grounds, the cost is $11 per day (complimentary shuttle service is available at select locations). Parking is also available at the South Gate Parking Lot for $5.50 per day (limited parking; complimentary shuttle service is available at the Welcome Center) and the Danbury School Parking Lot for $1.50 per day (limited parking; no shuttle service available). Season Auto Passes are also offered.

The Lakeside Heritage Society will host its annual recycle sale featuring housewares, linens, furniture and lawn equipment.

Memorial Day Weekend Sailing Race

Lakevue Marina (outside Lakeside gates)
The Memorial Day Weekend Sailing Race will offer two sailboat classes, 22' & above and 30' & above. This is a displacement boating event. Therefore, boats are required to have keels and a Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) rating.
Gentle Wellness Yoga

Upper Room
This yoga class  focuses on soothing, gentle movements, breathing techniques and the development of balance and flexibility. All are welcome. Instructor Diane Bielecki was trained by the Cleveland Clinic School of Yoga.

All are invited to dine at Hotel Lakeside for the Memorial Day Weekend Brunch. The buffet-style menu includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage gravy and biscuits, waffles, assorted cheeses, fresh fruit, assorted muffins, salad, vegetable of the day, potato of the day, chef's dish of the day, a meat carving station and assorted desserts. The cost is $22/adult, $11/child (ages 4-10) and children age 3 and under are free.

Enjoy the taste of summer at the Memorial Day Weekend Cookout. The menu of grilled favorites will include hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad, chips and cookies. Water and pop will also be available.
The Underground

Teen Center/Lower Pavilion Room
Located in the Lower Pavilion Room, The Underground (teen center) features comfortable seating, charging stations, Wii U, Xbox One, foosball and much more for ages 13-18. There will be limited programming for teens over the holiday weekend.
Wooden Boat Rides

Lakeside Information Center/Dock
Wooden boat rides aboard the Richardson Cruiseabout, Amazing Grace, will be offered. The cost for these
30-minute rides is $20/adult and $6/youth (ages 4-12). Children age 3 and under are not permitted.
