New Pioneer Athletic Center opens
Last week, the Pioneer Athletic Center officially opened with a ceremony and blessing by Fr. Adam Ahern. Students, faculty and staff, alumni, donors and parents were in attendance. The new entrance to the baseball and football/soccer fields and track includes restrooms, concession stand, ticket booth, and press box - all air conditioned (and heated in the winter).

Jack Koetter '72, who has overseen the implementation of the school's Master Plan, is glad to see the plan finally taking shape. 

"We're in the home stretch, but we still have some work to do," Koetter said.

The project began in 2014 when the soccer field was moved to the football field, which received a turf playing surface. Next, the baseball field was moved a few feet in 2015-2016. With those adjustments complete, a new entrance for both fields with updated accommodations for fans and eventually student-athletes is now in place.

"I'm glad to see this part finished," Koetter said. "I could see it in my mind when we started planning it that this would be a grand entrance to these new fields. But those other things had to happen first - the soccer field moved to the football field and the baseball field moved so this building could be built. Now it's here, and now you come in and there's that 'wow' factor."

Koetter is eager for the remainder of the project to be finished, which includes refurbishing the home side bleachers in Murphy Stadium and completing the other side of the PAC, which will feature locker rooms and a training facility once additional funds are received from donors.

"We still have the other side of the building to complete and the home football/soccer bleachers to be refurbished, but we're almost there," Koetter said. "To see this opened and people enjoying it, I'm really pleased with it."
Seniors honored at Rotary Club breakfast
This morning, the top 10 seniors in the class academically were honored at a breakfast meeting of the Clarksville Rotary Club. Those seniors are Juston Betz, Haley Brock, Hannah Hunter, Natalie Jacobi, Tony Kaiser, Claire Rauck, Elizabeth Scharre, Vonda Smith, Nicholas Tomlin, and Bayley Wade (not pictured). Additionally, Bayley and seniors Chloe Reisinger and Barrett Johnson each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Rotary Club to attend any college.
Art fair, Deanery musical this weekend
The talents of our Deanery youth will be on display this weekend in the Robinson Auditorium. On Friday and Saturday, Deanery performing artists from fifth through eighth grade, including some of our own junior high students, will put on Alice in Wonderland Jr. ( Click here for a cast list.) Director Mrs. Ellen Holifield said it's been a pleasure working with students from across the Deanery.

"The cast is doing a great job of pulling together for Alice in Wonderland," she said. "We have 53 Deanery students in the cast and six on our tech crew. It has been great working with all of them, and I'm excited for the future of Providence Theatre!"

Mrs. Holifield said audiences will enjoy this version of the classic story. "Audiences will love the modern take on a classic story, the bright characters, and the memorable music," she said.

Showtime both nights is 7:00 p.m., and tickets are $5 at the door. The Deanery Art Fair awards will be presented on Saturday before the start of the musical.

High school art show on Thursday
The high school art show and reception is tomorrow, May 11, in the Robinson Auditorium from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Congratulations to all students who entered a submission and especially those who received top honors.

Art teachers' work on display
Art teachers Mrs. Donna Burden and Ms. Stephanie Lebrun will have their personal art work on display at the Art Council of Southern Indiana's Pat Harrison Arts Center Gallery in downtown New Albany May 12-June 3. The opening reception for the Art of Education show featuring works by regional art educators will be Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Eighth graders enjoy end-of-year Deanery events
Yesterday, our eighth graders joined other eight grade students from around the Deanery for the annual Eighth Grade Deanery Mass & Picnic as they prepare for graduation from grade school. The students celebrated liturgy at Sacred Heart and enjoyed a picnic lunch at Vissing Park in Jeffersonville.
House of Faith wins House Cup
In the second annual spring House Cup competition, the House of Faith came out victorious in the student and faculty lip sync contest. The rendition of "A Whole New World" from Aladdin by House of Faith faculty Mr. Bart Makowski as Aladdin and Mr. Seth Blakeslee as Jasmine was a fan favorite and top with the judges.

The destination college for seniors Tori and Erica Denison was incorrect in the story "Senior receives full-ride Lilly Scholarship" in the previous issue. They are planning to attend the University of Southern Indiana. The article also omitted that the scholarship is administered by the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana. Senior earns Eagle Scout rank
Senior Andrew Boehm has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank issued by the Boys Scouts of America. Nationwide, only 6 percent of Boy Scouts achieve this rank, which requires the Scout to advance through the various ranks, earn at least 21 merit badges and lead a service project that demonstrates leadership, organization and other skills. At Providence, he is the seventh senior to earn the highest honor in scouting, including a senior girl who earned the Gold Award in Girl Scouts. Read more.

Junior is national gymnastics champion
For junior Madison Roehrs, a competitive gymnast for SIGS, her years of hard work have paid off. At the end of April, she won National Bar Champion and National Floor Exercise Champion at the Eastern Junior Olympic Level 9 National Championships in Lansing, Mich. The competition is the pinnacle of competition for Junior Olympic Level 9. Read more.
Students to be honored at NTSPY banquet
Senior Claire Rauck has been named a finalist for NTSPY player of the year for Girls Basketball and to the News & Tribune All-Area First Team. Teammates junior Hannah Wolford and seniors Cheyenne Brooks, Mia Fougerousse, and Olivia Jenkins were also named to the All-Area Team -- Hannah to the second team, Cheyenne to the third team, and Mia and Olivia honorable mention.

Boys Basketball seniors Juston Betz, Eli Coker and Alex Judd were named to the boys' News & Tribune All-Area team, Juston to the second team, and Eli and Alex honorable mention.

Student-athletes recognized by the News & Tribune in all sports will be honored at the NTSPY Awards banquet on June 20 at Eastside Christian Church in Jeffersonville.

Courier-Journal Southern Indiana Player of the Week
Sophomore Joe Wilkinson was nominated Courier-Journal Southern Indiana Player of Week for hitting three home runs in the last week of April, including two homers and five RBIs against Crawford County.
Tennis court receives new windscreens

Cross Country, Dance coaches needed
The Providence Athletic Department is searching for a Boys & Girls Cross Country head coach and a girls' Dance Team head coach and assistant coach for the 2017-18 school year. The Cross Country coach position requires a strong knowledge of cross country running and proper training and knowledge of injury protection at the high school level. The individual needed also must be proactive in building on the program from the New Albany Deanery level. Additional skills include: organization, communication, detail-oriented, cross country contacts and a team player.

Final exam schedules
The last BLUE Days sessions for the school year are May 15-16. O n May 22, the school day begins at 8:00 a.m., and final exams for seniors begin. Final exams for underclassmen begin on May 23 at 8:00 a.m. Students are in school for a full day during final exam week. The last day of school for the 2016-2017 school year is May 26. All library books and school books must be returned before the end of the school year, and all outstanding accounts, including lunch and tuition, must be paid.

Concerns over teens viewing 13 Reasons Why
Parents of youth and teens who are reading or viewing the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why will want to view a very important webinar from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis Youth Ministry Office. The webinar also provides information on teen suicide prevention.

Despite its TV-Mature rating, the Netflix original series has become popular among middle school and high school-age students. Based on a young adult novel released a decade ago, the mini-series depicts high school student Hannah Baker and the ramifications of her suicide. She leaves behind 13 tape recorded messages detailing why she took her own life and who was "responsible." Her former classmates are left to piece together Hannah's final weeks.

Suicide prevention groups, youth leaders and educators have expressed concern that young people watching the show might see suicide presented as a viable or romanticized option. The show's content is extremely graphic, with disturbing scenes in each episode.

Mary Rezac writes in an article for Catholic News Agency:
"Suicide prevention groups and youth leaders have raised concerns because the show is particularly popular among a teenage audience, and teenagers are a vulnerable population."

The webinar also provides additional resources for parents.

Alumni singers needed for Baccalaureate Mass

Alumni return to share info on their careers
Over the next several weeks, various alumni will visit Providence to talk about their careers with students in Freshman Focus. Last week, Clarksville PD Reserve Officer Tyler Ash '10 spoke to the class about careers in law enforcement. Other visitors will include Jimmie Guilfoyle '05, Clarksville Town Court judge; Ashton Cash '14, who completed college in three years primarily through online courses, and Tom Upton, a Clarksville firefighter and present parent. 
Alumni Association sponsoring Texas Hold 'em Night
The Alumni Association will host a Texas Hold 'Em Tournament on June 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church's Walpole Hall, 1840 E. 8th St. in Jeffersonville. Registration is at 6:30, and the buy-in is $40 for 5,000 chips with one $40 add-on for 10,000 chips. Concessions will be available for sale throughout the evening. Proceeds support the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. The public is invited, and alumni are especially encouraged to attend.

Brothers enjoy sport of collegiate fishing
Wade Brown '11 was looking for a student activity to join as a University of Louisville college freshman when he stumbled upon the Bass Fishing Club. A year or so later, he finally convinced his twin brother, Trent '11, to join too. Over the next six years, they formed friendships and found internship opportunities through the collegiate fishing club, which competes in national tournaments with other college teams. Read more.
Landon Carrico '16 is HCAC Freshman of the Year
Landon Carrico '16 has already made his mark on the Hanover College men's tennis team. In his debut season, he was named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. He joined the team in the No. 1 singles spot and compiled a 16-6 overall singles record and 7-1 record in the HCAC. A significant victory was handing the HCAC's three-time Player of the Year his only conference singles loss this season.

Landon joined the top doubles spot later in the season, going 3-2 in conference matches and 3-6 overall. He also earned all-HCAC honors for his performance this season.

Mary, our model and mother, by your obedience and patience you have taught us how to be true children of God. Please help us by your powerful assistance to overcome all our weaknesses, and to fulfill perfectly our tasks in life.

By your compassionate aid may we ever stand in spirit with you beneath the cross of Christ so that we may also rejoice with you in your divine Son's triumphant victory over sin and death.
