Happy New Year and Welcome Back!

Here's hoping that our students got some well-deserved rest over the two-week break. They earned it. I have commented before that our trimester system, and the natural breaks it offers, comprises an important part of the soul of our schools. So, now we are back, refreshed, and ready to go!

Our boys' and girls' basketball and soccer teams are up and running for the winter season. Varsity boys' basketball will be defending their state championship and the girls will hope to convert their state runner-up medals to winners' medals this year. No pressure!

Also upcoming are robotics tournaments, Classical Night, Fathers' Breakfast, International Week, High School 101 (for 8th grade families), Quiz Bowl Night, College Nights, and a host of other events and activities. This year's gala, "The British Invasion," is on Saturday, May 5, a date worth putting on your calendars right now! Check out the full calendar by clicking the button below.

On the business side, note that you will receive reenrollment contracts for the 2018-2019 school year by email no later than Friday January 19. The board has kept tuition increases to approximately 7%, which keeps our tuition firmly at the median for Los Angeles independent schools. We have actually been underpricing for the past few years compared to other great local independent schools, and we must keep pace in order to maintain competitive compensation levels for our talented, dedicated teachers. It costs several thousand dollars more than the tuition payment to educate each student here, a gap that you always help make up with generous tax-deductible donations to the Husky Fund. Thank you! (Have you made your donation to the Husky Fund yet this year? We look for 100% participation in a 100-day period, which, this year, finishes on January 19.)

We are seeing a second record year for applications in all grades so please do get the enrollment contract and deposit back to the business office by the deadline. Returning families retain priority for places until that deadline, after which we open spots up for new families. We expect to see wait lists in a number of grades again this spring.
As the new year begins, we are delighted to welcome back new, proud, faculty mothers Emily Wratschko and Ana Alejandre. At the same time we say a fond farewell to Admission Director Ryan Tillson who is moving on to some interesting and exciting business ventures. We thank him for the good work he has done in our admission office for the past four years. Please direct all upcoming admission inquiries to Shannon Kitani [email protected] or me for the time being.

Happy New Year and Go Huskies!

Support Varsity Girls' Basketball!

Join the RHP and Ren community at Blaze Pizza on January 10, 2018 and support Varsity Girls' Basketball! Present the flyer (linked below) in hard copy or on your phone between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and a portion of your purchase will be used to support our schools.

We hope to see you there. Go Huskies!

Thank You to the RHP & Ren Community for Holiday Donations!

We received a nice thank-you from Harbor Interfaith Services for the 55 bags of  groceries we donated to their program to help families in need in the South Bay.  We also provided toys for children in foster care through a program set up by the Sandpipers of Manhattan Beach.  Thanks to all in our school community for their generosity.

Thank You For Supporting Our Schools With a Gift to
The Husky Fund

By now we hope everyone has seen the Husky Fund tower in the parking lot, counting down our 100-day campaign and tracking participation by grade level.  Thank you to everyone who has already made a gift or a pledge to The Husky Fund.  With every family's participation, we will make our goal of $750,000 in 100 days.  Gifts paid prior on or before December 31, 2017, will receive tax letters for the current year.  Payments may be made through our website, via the link below, or by check delivered to the Development Office.  If you wish to make a stock contribution, or to arrange a pledge to be paid over time, call the Development Office to work out a customized plan. A gift to The Husky Fund is an investment in the education of all our students, and the dividends contribute to a lifetime of success.

Ervin Whitfield

" I was aware that not everyone has the same start in life, but never thought about the effects and struggles on a day to day basis. I realized life is easier now than it ever was before. And the opportunities I was given, there would be others who wouldn't have the same. But, as I kept thinking, a greater realization came and something I think you should know. Even though we all don't have the same start in life, it is our choice to make our lives better or question why me. "

Christopher Kent

"Thank you for everything that you have done for me. Dad, if you didn't show me music, I wouldn't have ever touched a trombone or sung for fun. Mom, if you never taught me how to cook sukiyaki and meatloaf, I probably would have cup noodles for dinner every day. Dad, if you weren't the one to teach me how to drive, I would have probably crashed already. While I definitely will still make mistakes, I still love you so much for loving me for who I am."

Trimester II kicked off with another round of the Husky Buddy Olympics. Students took part in trivia and relay races in their Husky Buddy teams.

7th Grade Future Cities students are hard at work planning their city for the competition.

8th Grade Science went on a field trip to see Body Worlds at the California Science Center.

8th Grade Science students also built their own Wind Turbines in-class.

Mr. Purdy taught a special Yoga class to 9th grade PE students as a part of "Life In Balance Week."
