Easier Green Building Compliance

From the Editor
Several years ago the USGBC, ASHRAE and the ICC signed a memorandum of understanding around the relationship between each of their green building documents. The ICC has the International Green Construction Code (IgCC); ASHRAE has their Standard 189.1 on High-Performing Green Buildings; and USGBC has LEED. Their agreement takes another step toward integration this summer as recently announced when the 2018 draft of the IgCC is "powered by 189.1" - a phrase that signifies the technical content of the IgCC will be the ASHRAE 189.1 standard. Once published, USGBC has announced they will review and compare it with LEED with the outcome likely being a mapping of the IgCC with LEED credit compliance. Read more below.

GREEN BUILDING NEWS
ICC Partnership With ASHRAE, AIA, USGBC And IES Means Higher Performing Buildings Will Be Easier To Achieve
ASHRAE.ORG
A unified green building code that could become the foundation for LEED certification was created in 2011, thanks to a partnership among ASHRAE, the International Code Council (ICC), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). That effort got a boost in August 2014, when ICC and ASHRAE agreed to align the technical requirements of ASHRAE's Standard 189.1 for High Performance Green Buildings (189.1) with ICC's International Green Construction Code (IgCC) into one single model code. This integrated document, coined the "IgCC powered by 189.1," will become the 2018 version of the IgCC (2018-IgCC), due to be published in summer 2018. It is anticipated that this new document will become the foundation for achievement of credits under LEED. Read more here .

PRODUCT NEWS
Manufacturers are increasingly working toward undertaking life cycle assessments of their products. It's no small task, but now the Slag Cement Association has made it a little easier for concrete products that incorporate slag cement. Read more in the article below. ~Tina

Calculator Performs Life Cycle Assessment for Slag Cement Concrete
CONCRETE PRODUCTS
Slag Cement Association has posted a free, downloadable calculator with which concrete producers can quantify and interpret cradle-to-gate life-cycle assessments (LCA) reflecting the environmental impact of mixtures with and without slag cement. Calculations are based on the industry-average Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for ready mixed concrete that incorporates industry-average EPDs for slag cement and portland cement in the United States. The calculator also allows users to evaluate how different concrete mixtures affect whole building impacts based on a typical case study project. Read more .

CA Introduces Bill to Require Greenhouse Gas Reporting
LATIMES.COM
A California lawmaker wants state officials to consider greenhouse gas emissions when making new purchases, a proposal that would add a new wrinkle to the bidding process for government contracts. Assembly Bill 262 would require reporting of greenhouse gas emissions for concrete, steel, asphalt and other materials purchased by the state using an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) or similarly robust form. Benefits of Extended Producer Responsibility Models
KNOWLEDGE@WHARTON
Extended producer responsibility has led companies to make a greater effort to utilize packaging and materials that are recyclable and include the cost for disposal in the retail price, according to this article . States such as Rhode Island have proposed passing laws regulating EPR, but national regulations on the practice don't exist.

ISO 14001 Could Improve Sustainability in Supply Chains
TRIPLEPUNDIT.COM
A significant number of global supply chains did not meet minimum environmental compliance standards in 2016, according to this article . To improve sustainability efforts, suppliers could implement the International Organization for Standardization's 14001 standard, which provides companies with a framework for establishing an environmental management system.

Symposium on Building Science and the Physics of Building Enclosure Performance
ASTM.ORG
To be held October 21, 2018 in Washington, DC, this symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on current research, both nationally and internationally, regarding building science and the physics of building enclosure performance, with an emphasis on testing and assessment of heat/air/moisture transfer, energy use, and the environment. It will also explore the growing influence of building science on material selection and detailing in both new construction and the adaptive re-use of existing buildings. For more information on the objectives and abstract submission please visit: http://www.astm.org/E06_D08CFP1018 .

Symposium on Whole Building Air Leakage: Testing and Building Performance Impacts
ASTM.ORG
This Symposium, to be held April 8, 2018 in San Diego, CA, shall provide for the exchange of ideas on current air leakage research relative to modeled or measured performance; a forum to review and discuss and focus attention on trends in whole building air leakage, in design criteria, construction, and performance verification; and identify new opportunities for new and revised standards and/or their incorporation or adoption into design criteria and regulations. For more information on the objectives and abstract submission please visit: http://www.astm.org/E06CFP42018 .
