Featured Artist: Michael Lowenbein

To The Track By Michael Lowenbein
Michael Lowenbein (1935-2009) was born in New York and started painting at the age of 10 by copying the work of Old Masters. After graduating from the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan, he went on to Pratt Institute, earning a BA in Fine Arts. The army sent Michael to Paris for a two-year stint as an officer. While there, he ran the command photo lab and the people and scenes of Paris became the inspiration for his paintings.

A Connecticut resident for many years, Lowenbein combined his passion for painting with a career in commercial art. His work as an illustrator appeared on the covers of Reader's Digest and other magazines, in various children's books, and national advertisements for major corporations. He also spent four years studying portrait painting with artist Clifford Jackson.

Later in life, Lowenbein concentrated on his painting, accepting commissions and exhibiting in galleries and shows. He received awards at several Connecticut art shows and galleries, including Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan, Rowayton Arts Center in Norwalk, Betty Barker Gallery at Waveny Park in New Canaan, Wally Findlay Galleries in New York and Palm Beach, Florida, and Birdsnest Gallery in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Working primarily with oils, Lowenbein's favorite subjects were people -- adults and children -- and their pets. However, he was also adept in capturing the mood and character of the sea and land with his splendid seascapes and landscapes. He captured mood and character, no matter his subject.

To quote the late painter, "I paint the people, places and things I love. Knowing the subject is essential to achieving the feeling and subtlety I strive for in my work. Capturing the mood, place and time are very special to me. I only paint what is essential in a picture, leaving out as much as possible. What is not painted is as important as what is painted. If I am successful in inviting the viewer in to share and complete my vision then I have created a good painting."

Mr. Lowenbein's exhibit runs through January 31, 2018, and his paintings are available for acquisition. All are welcome and admission is free.
