Special Beacon Congregational Meeting
Important Votes Regarding the Capital Campaign

ATTENTION: Please note that this is the correct date; ignore the date cited on mailed post cards.

The Congregation will vote:
- To authorize a building-expansion capital campaign in spring 2018, which will determine the congregation's financial commitment for a building expansion.
- To authorize the withdrawal of up to $11,000 from the Building Reserve Fund to advance the building design from the current 10% level of completion to a more detailed 25-30% level.
The Building Reserve Fund exists for just such purposes as #2. This money is not taken from our operating budget. The $11,000 would permit the architect to develop a more detailed building design than we currently have, which would, in turn, allow the contractor to provide a more accurate construction-cost estimate. Any withdrawal from the Building Reserve Fund must be agreed upon by a vote of the congregation.
The Building Expansion Team understand the concerns expressed in the December 3rd Town Hall meeting about the amount of any required loan. The more detailed building design will provide a better idea of the loan amount needed to cover the difference between what is raised by the Capital Campaign and the total cost of the project.
If you cannot attend on January 7, please ask someone to vote for you by proxy, and notify Board Secretary Diana Roy by email ([email protected]) no later than Saturday, January 6 at noon. A member may represent no more than one proxy.

~ Community Action Committee ~
Thanks to Beacon's commitment to Share the Plate with approved community partners! For January's undesignated Sunday morning offering money beyond $300 will be presented to Sun Sounds of Flagstaff.
If you would like to nominate an organization to be a community partner, pick up the application in the CAC folder at the bottom of the office stairs. Information and instructions for Share the Plate partners are described on that form.
The CAC is comprised of Joanne Parkes, Sue Strobel, Lynda Dorweiler, Rev. Kevin Lawson and Rich Clark.

~ Social Justice Allies (SJA) ~
Sunday, January 21:
Regular 3rd Sunday SJA meeting following the service (about 11:15) in the Purple Room.
Following that SJA meeting: UUJAZ Executive Director Lisa McDaniel-Hutchings will facilitate a Zoom electronic training session in preparation for Day at the Legislature (see below). Because We don't yet have the exact time of the training session, but we're promoting a 1:00pm start time.
Monday, February 19 (Presidents' Day):
Day at the Legislature (DATL), an all-day gathering at the Capitol in Phoenix. It's both a statewide UU rally and an opportunity to meet in small groups with our respective legislators. Long-term Beacon member (now living in Sedona and active in their UU Fellowship) Carolyn Kavanagh has been asked to be the Team Captain for Northern Arizona.
Emergency Plan for Beacon
With congregations of all stripes feeling especially vulnerable these days to serious unexpected disruption--or worse--SJA agree that it's prudent to develop clear systems for protecting people participating in our activities at Beacon. While a Beacon policy on Disruptive Behavior (Section 200.8) was approved in 2015, attention to highly dangerous emergencies is scant.
Our aim is to present a proposal to the CLC and the Board of Trustees at their January meetings the 17
th
and the 24
th
respectively.

Plan to join attendees from 185 PWR congregations as the four districts of the Pacific Western Region convene in Portland, Oregon,
April 27-29, for the 2018 Regional Assembly. Three dynamic speakers will address the theme,
Stories of Hope, Courage, Resistance, and Resilience. The Rev. Dr. William Barber, a national figure in civil rights activism, will be in the pulpit for Sunday's worship service. Saturday's keynote speaker will be Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, the first Indian-American woman to be elected to U.S. Congress. Jayapal has spent the last twenty years working internationally and domestically as a leading advocate for women's, immigrant, civil, and human rights. The Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray, UUA President, will speak at Friday evening's opening ceremony. Frederick-Gray will share her emerging vision for the future of the UUA and the wider movement.

~ Religious Exploration ~
Looking forward to seeing you for RE on Sunday January 7!
- Pre-K to Grade 2 children are introduced to their own conscience as an inner voice that can guide them to make choices that effect goodness and justice.
- Grades 3 & 4 are encouraged to join a very special Google Group created just for them. (Let me know if your child is in that age group and you did not receive an invitation.) Here they will find fun family activities that will prepare them for the lesson on Sunday. This week we will talk about the courageous leader, Harriet Tubman.
- Grades 5 to 8 we will begin our new curriculum titled "Building Bridges: A World Religions Program." We will start our journey this week right at home and learn about Lydia Maria Child, a famous radical and reformer.
