Cold hands and sweaty palms. That's all I could think about going into my very first job interview. I was 15 ½ years old and applying to be a cashier at our local TG&Y (a long ago version of 99 Cent Stores). I was absolutely terrified of that first handshake. But, as soon as I sat down in front of Mr. Pettiway, Assistant Store Manager, I began to feel better. Thirty minutes later, when I walked out of the store with a job, I was exhilarated. Yes, my hands were still cold and sweat had spread to other parts of my body, but I had done it - landed my first job!
Earlier this month, ITEP held its annual Mock Interview Day for our 2017 Internship Program. As I greeted the students waiting to go into their very first interviews, there were quite a few cold, sweaty hands in the group. But what a transformation when they emerged! You can see it for yourself in the smiling faces of our students below.
Unlike me, ITEP students aren't walking in to the world of work alone. They have a caring community made up of mentors, guides, and role models who are with them along the way.

The Smiles on Their Faces After Interviews = Priceless
One after another, 150 students completed their final interviews of the day and left the building. They left with a sense of accomplishment and pride in having survived what for many young people is the single most nerve-racking event they will face in their emerging careers...the interview.
After a year's worth of workshops on d
ressing for success, networking, building their personal brand, and more, this month's mock interviews were one of the final steps in preparation for the
ITEP Internship Program
.
Hailing from across all of greater Los Angeles, the students who participated in this event will utilize the feedback and interview strategies learned during their final internship interviews in June.

How a T-shirt Brings Curriculum to Life
From raw cotton to a finished product waiting to be purchased on a store shelf - there's a lot to learn from the journey of a cotton t-shirt. This is the premise behind the "Follow the T-Shirt" project currently being implemented in Ms. Finley's International Trade class at Phineas Banning High School. ITEP and industry partners are helping bring the concepts of supply chain management and goods movement to life. Earlier this month, 36 students toured APL's Global Gateway South Terminal at the Port of Los Angeles, followed by a tour of the Marine Exchange of Southern California. These experiences provided them with a first-hand look into the transportation of goods, such as cotton t-shirts. Stay tuned for more updates on this project.

A Job for a Day
ITEP students from Phineas Banning, Narbonne, and San Pedro high schools
received
an opportunity to explore first-hand some of the many industries and career paths available to them, including those in international trade and logistics, during our annual
Job Shadow Day
. Students did not simply observe, they received a chance to roll-up their sleeves and work, ask questions from industry experts, and hone their networking skills.

| SouthBay Pavilion sponsors a social media campaign contest with 27 ITEP students from Carson High School. |

|
After months of preparation, five groups of ITEP seniors from Carson High School's Global Business, Law, and Government academy presented their social media marketing campaign ideas for the SouthBay Pavilion at the final judging held on Tuesday, April 18th. Each group developed an innovative social media campaign that maximized reach and awareness, increased mall foot traffic, and was developed within a set budget.
The old adage in advertising is "Humor Sells" and this year's winners took that strategy to heart, producing an amusing YouTube video, which featured original music and lyrics.
The winning group received a cash prize of $750. The second-place winners received $500 for an influencer marketing strategy that focused on creating a YouTube celebrity meet and greet event at the mall that could be promoted via both Twitter and Facebook. The third place winners of $250 came up with the novel idea of hosting various food eating contests at the mall and promoting them via Twitter.
A special thank you to the SouthBay Pavilion, especially Sweeney Montinola; Dr. Sarah Brown from the Center for Powerful Public Schools; the panel of judges who selected the winners - Julie Cruz and Cheryl Roberts from the SouthBay Pavilion and Tamala Lewis from the Stub Hub Center; and all supporting teachers and faculty at Carson High School, especially Ms. Green.

Surprises, Tears, and So Much Inspiration: A Night to Remember
On March 23rd, more than 760 ITEP partners, students, alumni, and friends joined in celebration of student achievements at the 17th annual Oceans of Opportunity event at Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles. Over the course of the evening, 28 students were honored for their passion, perseverance, and commitment to academic excellence. The scholarships for the night totaled over $14,500 and the event culminated with an acknowledgement of the five special honorees featured below.
From all of us at ITEP, thank you for making this our most successful Oceans of Opportunity ever. The partnerships that are formed through these events and the lives that are changed is what this is all about. We look forward to seeing each of you again next year.

The touching video created by Ms. Finley's students to celebrate her achievement as Educator of the Year was a beautiful testament to her commitment to students and her unwavering support of their dreams and ambitions.

Staff Spotlight: Belén Bernal
Meet Belén, ITEP's new Operations Manager.
Belén has over ten years of experience working in the non-profit and public sectors. She has promoted access to social services, civic engagement, and legal services while working with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, Community Lawyers, Inc., and the Oldtimers Foundation. Belén has been recognized for her public service and was appointed to serve on her local city council in 2015. She remains involved with groups and organizations that seek to build a better and stronger network of resources for the local community.
