Happy Mother's Day
Maria is 103! Here she is celebrating with her family...
below, she shares some tips for longevity.
Living to 103? Here's Maria's keys to longevity:
Go to bed early, never on a full stomach, but eat a BIG breakfast every day - eggs, toast, and fruit.
She's never smoked, and
tastes wine, but doesn't really drink it.
And exercise... at Friendship Center she walks laps around the patio with her walker.
Her daughter adds, "Her positive outlook is a big factor in my mom's long and happy life!"
Dear Friends,
Around Mother's Day, we think of our moms and other beloved relatives who've made our lives so rich. It can also be a poignant time for those whose parents are aging and needing more care, as it may feel that roles from earlier in life have been reversed.
Maria's situation is different than many of those we serve in that she has not been diagnosed with any memory loss. However, just as with any of our members, the structure of our program provides social contact and activities during the day to keep her lively and engaged. Though she lives alone, Maria is not lonely-she is the matriarch of a big happy family, with three daughters and a son, 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren!
In addition, Maria accomplished a longtime goal late in life--at 85 she received her high school diploma. One of six siblings, born in Texas, she made her way to California at 16 to find work. Maria got a job as a nanny with a lovely family in Hope Ranch, traveling with them all over the country by train. As wonderful as this was, it meant she never finished high school. After Maria's husband, Aldo, passed away about twenty years ago, one of her daughters suggesting looking into getting her diploma, which she did, with great pride, through Adult Education.
We are in awe of Maria's vitality and vigor, and delighted to have her here with us at Friendship Center, where she can maintain that energy as she heads for birthday number 104 in August!
Your gift in memory or in honor of a loved one will assist us in continuing to provide affordable adult day services for the 82% of our members and their families who qualify as low-income. With a sense of pride in our work, we thank you for contributions, which make a big difference to the safety and quality of life of these most vulnerable members of our community.
From the heart,
Kathy Marden Heidi Holly
Board President Executive Director
