Oakland Raiders
Beast Mode, Redux
|
The Oakland Raiders are hoping their new teammate, former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch (24), still requires three tacklers to bring him down, as seen in this 2015 game against the San Francisco 49ers. Lynch and the Raiders agreed to terms on a contract last Wednesday that allows him to come out of retirement and play for his hometown team. Beast Mode and the Black Hole? A marriage made in heaven. © 2017 Kenny Karst Photography.

San Francisco Giants Updates
|
The San Francisco Giants relied on their All-Star catcher, Buster Posey, to preserve a dramatic 2-1 victory over their SoCal rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers, at AT&T Park on Monday night, April 24. First Posey threw out Chris Taylor trying to steal second base to end the eighth inning. One inning later Posey caught Justin Turner off second base to end the game, with Adrian Gonzalez at the plate. Photo by Rich Yee. |
San Francisco Giants Update:
Sunday afternoon's game against the Padres epitomized the Giants season so far. Ty Blach pitched seven scoreless innings, and the Giants scored two runs to take the lead heading into the final frame. The bullpen couldn't finish the job, however, with closer Mark Melancon giving up a game-tying homer in the 9th inning to former Giant Hector Sanchez. The Padres hurt the bullpen again in the 12th, with a three-run homer by Wil Myers off of George Kontos to seal their victory. The Giants finished their 7-game home stand with a 3-4 record, with the bullpen being responsible for three of the losses. Nonetheless, there were bright spots throughout the week, including the return of Michael Morse, the addition of Christian Arroyo to the roster, and a pair of quality starts by Matt Cain. After a 9-17 record for the month of April, the Giants will try to flip the script and gain momentum in May. Hopefully this will begin on Monday, when the Giants start a three-game series with the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Oakland
starting pitcher Jharel Cotton went six strong innings on April 22 to help the A's post a 4-3 win over the visiting Seattle Mariners. Cotton was traded to Oakland from the

Oakland Athletics Update:
The A's had a tough week of division play, facing the Angels and Astros on the road. The A's were swept in Los Angeles and lost two out of three in Houston during a week that saw the A's struggle to bring in runs. Jesse Hahn was impressive in his start against JC Ramirez of the Angels, allowing only one hit while striking out six in eight scoreless innings. Kendall Graveman also put up a quality start in his return from the DL, allowing two runs over six innings. Both of these pitchers ended with a loss on their record, however, with the Athletics only producing one run in each game. It was more of the same against the Astros, with the one win coming courtesy of Andrew Triggs. Triggs struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, dropping his ERA to 1.84 for the season. The A's rotation will get more help next week with the long-awaited return of Sonny Gray, who is expected to start Tuesday against the Twins. The A's finished the week with an 11-14 record, good enough for third place in the AL West.

Sports Prep Star -- Taliyah Miles
Sheldon-Sacramento
-- Softball -- Senior
The Delaware State-bound senior pitcher earned Most Valuable Player honors in helping lead the Huskies to the title at the 23rd Annual Livermore Stampede Tournament held April 6-8. Miles was the winning pitcher in all of the team's contests, which included a 5-1 win in the final over Foothill-Pleasanton and a 7-1 win over Heritage-Brentwood in the semifinals. Both opponents were ranked within the top 15 of the SportStars NorCal Top 20 upon entering the tournament. Sheldon entered the tournament at No. 2. Miles did major damage at the plate as well during the Stampede. She homered in the win over Heritage and went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI on a double and sacrifice fly in the final. The victory marked the third time Sheldon has won the renowned NorCal tournament.

Marshawn Lynch, prior to Cal's game last fall against Washington, recreates
his memorable golf cart drive of 10 years earlier, after the Golden Bears beat Washington. (Lynch had scored the winning touchdown in a 31-24 overtime victory and hopped in a cart to celebrate.) His mother, Mama (Delisha) Lynch, said afterwards she was "...shaking like a leaf on a tree," with her son at the wheel.

Marshawn Lynch's Best Mode
By Dave Newhouse
Marshawn Lynch has come back home to Oakland, but only in a professional sense. Oakland has been his true home all along, but his football travels relocated him to Buffalo and Seattle. But with his recent trade from the Seahawks to the Raiders, he is experiencing an emotional homecoming.
But which Marshawn Lynch will he allow the Raider Nation to see and hear -- the reluctant interviewee of his previous two pro stops, or the other Marshawn Lynch, outgoing and engaging? Yes, there is that other Marshawn Lynch, whom I encountered at Cal from 2005 to 2007. I covered the Golden Bears in football during those years for the now defunct Oakland Tribune. And Lynch was a joy to be around, always forthcoming and -- believe it or not -- available to be interviewed. I can't remember him ever turning down an interview request. Or a photo request. He even agreed to remove his shirt to show off a tattoo across his back that was a tribute to his mother. He was delightful to be around, even educating yours truly on the hip language of the day: "Chillin'," etc. You could ask him almost anything, even about his academics at Cal. He said he was getting B's in his classes, which ended in his junior year when he left early for the NFL, becoming the 12th overall player taken by the Bills. I don't know how he could have been more honest about his life without it becoming an open book. I even recall his discussing being shot while riding with some friends on their way to attending a graduation ceremony at Oakland Tech, several years after Lynch had attend the same high school. My last conversation with Lynch was immediately after his draft selection party, held at Oakland Tech. I read later about his hitting a pedestrian while driving in Buffalo, which might have factored into his sudden unavailability to the media, a pattern which then carried over to Seattle. Even though he has lots to discuss as a five-time Pro Bowl selection, a six-time 1,000-yard rusher, an All-Pro in 2012, and a Super Bowl XLVIII champion, he chooses to be perceived as Marshawn the Mute, the intensely private football hero. I've heard through the grapevine -- there are grapes, indeed, in Washington state -- that Lynch was the most popular player in the Seattle locker room.
I was visiting the Seattle area after the Seahawks won the Super Bowl, and watched the parade on TV as Lynch sat on the hood of the lead bus and threw Skittles to his adoring fans. Then I saw him blow off reporters afterwards.
But that parade offered a rare appearance of Marshawn the Mirthful, the same fun-loving running back who drove an equipment golf cart in Memorial Stadium after he helped Cal beat Washington. I've got to believe that's the real Marshawn Lynch, now masked in disguise. I hope he reappears in Oakland and reveals his true identity. He's 31 now, with maybe two productive years remaining because of his physically demanding Beast Mode way of carrying the football. There's an old saying in sports: He's trying to say hello when it's time to say goodbye. In other words, when your career is over, don't try to become someone you haven't been. Marshawn Lynch is a good man with a lot to say. He just needs to say it while anyone is willing to listen. After his career is over, it may be too late.
Dave Newhouse's journalism career spans more than half a century, including 45 years at the Oakland Tribune before his retirement in November 2011. His twelfth book, co-authored with Eddie Hart, will be published this spring:
Disqualified: Eddie Hart, Munich 1972, and the Voices of the Most Tragic Olympics.
Dave grew up in Menlo Park, graduated from San Jose State, and has radio and television experience in addition to his work as an award-winning sportswriter and columnist.
