2017-18 Economic Forecast
Will the Trump administration disrupt the economic expansion?
University of Oregon Economic Professor and Oregon Economic Forum Senior Director Tim Duy has an answer to that question. Learn what he has to say by attending  the SEDCOR May Economic Business Forum  noon  to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the  Broadway Commons,  1300 Broadway St. NE in Salem.
With the economic expansion entering its eighth year this summer, the question for many economists is - will it continue or stumble?
Duy will review the current economic environment and explain his outlook for the next year for local, state and national economies. He will explain the signs the eight year expansion is drawing to a close and whether the Trump administration will push that timing forward or pull it back.  Duy has worked for the U.S. Department of Treasury as an economist in the International Affairs division and later with the G7 Group. He is a prominent commentator on the Federal Reserve, and MarketWatch describes his blog as "influencial" and The Huffington Post identified him as one of the top 26 economists to follow on Twitter.  To register for the lunch, go to SEDCOR's webpage www.sedcor.com  and click on Calendar of Events.

Henningsen Cold Storage opens new warehouse June 1
The Henningsen Warehouse has been built as an innovative hub for manufacturers and forward distribution, providing state-of-the-art infrastructure in a vastly growing region. The new facility is in the Mill Creek Corporate Park in Salem.
The initial phase, construction of the multi-temperature facility, will serve as the backbone of this food manufacturing and distribution complex. Future site plans include individually-managed pods earmarked for repack operations all the way to full food manufacturing. The 6 million cubic foot cold storage facility is designed to meet growing energy efficiency and distribution demands through flexible racking design, taller roof clearance, variable speed drives, underfloor heating from reclaimed compressor heat, and LED lighting throughout the warehouse. Co-located food companies will benefit from direct access to the cold storage warehouse, eliminating inefficient shuttle services. This warehouse proves Henningsen is actively partnering with its customers, and is built to handle your company's 3PL requirements with ease and efficiency. Located on the Interstate 5 corridor, and augmented with Henningsen Transportation Services, this facility offers a local, regional and nationwide reach to deliver your products to the hands of your customers.

Bond feasibility study
A Citizens Facilities Task Force has finished reviewing the Salem-Keizer Public School District's Long Range Facilities Plan.
The plan outlines improvements needed at schools and facilities.  Projects include  enlarging many school facilities to relieve crowding and prepare for future enrollment, adding space to the Career and Technical Education course offerings in high schools, adding science labs to middle and high schools, enhancing safety and security, and increasing seismic safety. The cost of needed work is estimated from $671 to $766 million.  The school board received and accepted a report from the volunteer task force that recommended the board pursue a general obligation bond to fund needed projects. The school board instructed district staff to conduct a bond feasibility study. The study is ongoing and results are expected in May.  Once the study is complete and the school board has reviewed the results, the board will decide when or if it is appropriate to place a bond on the ballot, and the bond amount.  For information about facility needs in Salem-Keizer Public Schools, visit  www.salemkeizer.org/district/citizens-facilities-task-force  To receive periodic news from Salem-Keizer, please email Karma Krause at   [email protected]   to subscribe to the district's E-Updates bulletin.

Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge
The city of Salem opened the Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge to the public on Friday, April 28. The bridge will remain open until June, when it will temporarily close to allow the contractor to safely remove the temporary work structures in the Willamette Slough and finish concrete walls, sidewalks and landscaping. The final construction phase must wait until June due to environmental regulations and requirements limiting access in the Willamette Slough. The city staff expects to hold a Grand Opening ceremony in August to celebrate the official and permanent opening of the bridge. First envisioned in 1975, the Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge and Trail is the last critical link in connecting 1,300 acres of parks and nearly 30 miles of trails between South Salem, Downtown Salem and West Salem. When combined, this acreage is larger than New York City's Central Park. To learn about the project visit  www.cityofsalem.net/mintobridge
