Te Deum, God We Praise You!
A Prayer for Eastertide and Baptism
"Lo, the apostolic train join your sacred name to hallow;
Prophets swell the glad refrain, and the white robed martyrs follow;
And from morn to set of sun though the church the song goes on."
Holy God, We Praise Your Name
ELW 414, vs 3
Dear Friends of Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church,
The Latin words of the Te Deum are traditionally ascribed to Sts. Ambrose and Augustine in 387 AD for the occasion Augustine's baptism. St. Ambrose was the Bishop of Milan where he encouraged many young men to become priests. Augustine was a promising candidate, in spite of his wanton lifestyle, so finally, at the age of 31, Augustine converted to Christianity and consented to be baptized. The words of the Te Deum follow the outline of the Apostles' Creed, the traditional creed used at baptism.
Calling on the name of God, Te Deum, the hymn proceeds to name all those who praise and venerate God, from the hierarchy of heavenly creatures, the seraphim and cherubim, to those faithful departed already in heaven, the apostles and the martyrs, and to the Church the church on earth that spreads the gospel throughout the world. The hymn then returns to its creedal formula, naming Christ and recalling his birth, suffering and death, his resurrection and glorification, and proclaim that "in God, we have our hope."
In the ancient cathedrals of Europe, the Te Deum was sung at the close of the morning service along with a chanted Easter blessing. This was to serve both as baptismal remembrance and to recall that in the water of baptism, we are given the Easter promise of life eternal. Water was often splashed over the parishioners as they sang the Te Deum. Throughout the season of Easter we will be closing our worship service with a hymn version of the Te Deum, and a baptismal remembrance. (Don't be surprised if you feel water dripping on your brow.)
A festive performance of Mozart's Te Deum will be performed by our choir, strings, brass and tympani for Ascension Sunday on May 21st. Maestro Mischa Santora, the Artistic Director of the Minneapolis Music Company and the former associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, will conduct the ensemble.
Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

MOTHER'S DAY AND FLOWER BOMBING SUNDAY, MAY 14
|
While walking the pilgrim trail of El Camino de Santiago in Spain, David Cook marveled at the 500 miles of sunflowers. They faced the sun and they were like humans. Their almost human faces inspired to create his own unique art form- "flower bombing." They came to life in his head , as he stayed up all night for four days in a row, painting
flowers manically. That is the genesis of his work that will be installed for our Mother's Day worship service at Lake of the Isles. Join us and experience the color of Minnesota artist David Cook, the Flower Bomber.

According to the Book of the Apostles, on the 40th day of Easter known, Jesus ascended into heaven. The church celebrates this day either on Ascension Day, which is always a Thursday, or on the closest Sunday. We will celebrate Christ's Ascension as a part of our worship service on Sunday, May 21st. The choir will perform Mozart's Te Deum, and the children will send off dove shaped balloons.

SUNDAY SCHOOL SERVICE DAY SUNDAY, MAY 21 "KIDS HELPING KIDS" |
We are getting ready for our 2nd annual service day in Sunday School! We have studied many stories where Jesus taught us to love one another and take care of each other, especially those less fortunate than us. Now it is time to put this learning into action!
On May 21, our kids will assemble art kits for kids attending Camp Noah, a day camp for kids who need time to process, play and heal after having experienced a disaster, and we are also making after school snack packs for families in need who use CES as a resource for services. Our goal is to make 100 + packets for both organizations.
How can you help?
We appreciate your generous offering to help us purchase the supplies needed for these two very important service projects. Please return the offering containers no later than May 14. If you didn't pick up an offering container, no worries! Just identify your offering check or envelope to go to the "Sunday School Service day". It is our hope to raise $400 to have enough funding for supplies needed for the art kits and snack packs.
Thank you so very much for supporting our Sunday School kids at LOTI!
