February, 2017

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The rain will stop soon. At least that is what the forecast predicts. My appreciation goes to our Public Works staff for their tireless efforts in dealing with the mudslides and flooding in our city. In some areas of the hills, staff is out in the field monitoring earth movement every four hours during heavy rains, weekends included. They are committed to protecting your safety and I am grateful for their diligence.

I am trying to figure out how the new federal policies regarding Sanctuary Cities and immigration will impact Berkeley. As a city, we reaffirmed our sanctuary status and our commitment to our core values of acceptance, tolerance, and equality. We will protect our residents regardless of immigration status. However, I do not yet have a clear understanding of what that actually means if we are faced with a raid by ICE, as happened last week in Southern California. I will be participating in a working group convened by the Mayor and School District to discuss these issues. In addition, I will be attending sessions hosted by Congresswoman Barbara Lee. If our new president holds to his word, we will be losing federal funding for health and housing programs. Later in the Spring I plan to host a community town hall meeting so that all your questions about our goals and policies regarding sanctuary status can be addressed. In the meantime, I am trying to gather information and learn as much as possible.

Please email me if you have any questions, and include your phone number. I have a dominant right hand injury that makes typing a challenge for now, so phoning is the best way for me to communicate with you.

My best regards,

As you probably have discovered, Andronico's is now owned by Safeway, and both the Shattuck and Solano stores are being renovated. Councilmember Hahn, who now represents District 5, has requested that I pass on notice of this meeting to residents in my district who might be curious about the future of the two sites.

Your Voice Matters Provide Input to Help Guide City Government Priorities

Use the City's new online engagement tool - Berkeley Considers - to provide input on the Berkeley Strategic Plan, a blueprint to guide City priorities for improving our service to the community.

The survey, which will take less than 10 minutes to complete, is an opportunity for you to communicate what you think are the most important issues facing the Berkeley community. The input from you and others will inform the goals and priorities included in the Berkeley Strategic Plan, which will serve as a guide for how we allocate our time and resources over the next two years and beyond

Access the Strategic Plan survey on Berkeley Considers through Tuesday, February 28 th
servicesSERVICES FOR OUR VULNERABLE POPULATIONS
The Housing, Health and Community Services Department has recently published a presentation for Councilmembers. I am sharing it with you here because many of you have expressed interest in knowing more about what the city is doing for our vulnerable populations, including the homeless and the mentally ill. This is the most comprehensive overview of the City's programs that I have received.
