Executive Director's Letter

Dear Library Patrons,

When Otis Library reopened to the public in the spring of 2007, it could be stated with little fear of dissent that libraries were designed specifically to draw people to them, that the edifice defined the limitations of the service model. There were exceptions, but generally the public was expected to transit to the facility in order to partake of the services. Much has changed in the intervening years and outreach is now a significant and growing part of daily activities at Otis Library. The reasons for this evolution reflect larger changes in demographics and society.  At both ends of the age spectrum, there are significant populations with limited access to transportation or who are unable to avail themselves of it. Therefore, our children's staff now schedules regular visits to 8  area preschools, bringing programs and materials to 300 students who might otherwise not experience the benefits of early reading. At the other end of the continuum are services for older adults and residents who are unable to leave home or health care facilities. A staff member now makes deliveries to individuals and 3 convalescent homes and assisted living facilities. In July and August our portable libraries, ensconced in their distinctive green carts, appear at the Parks and Recreation Department and Mohegan Park Beach providing the public with a wide selection of reading materials. There are also outreach activities that cultivate patrons among New Americans, recent arrivals in Norwich and veterans.

The Friends of Otis Library help us achieve great things. Most recently, the Friends presented the library with a check for $6,165 to support early literacy programming, adult programs and the continued availability of the popular Pronunciator foreign language software. In addition, April's spring book sale earned $4,406. Both results are most welcome and are an affirmation of the Friends support of Otis Library's services and programs. Thank you to the book sale committee for their hard work and to the public who support this biannual event.

Otis Library is constantly evolving to meet the needs of residents. At the library and in the community you will find exemplary programs and excellent customer service.

Robert Farwell
Executive Director
