Where

A new restaurant called Republic at Arlington will replace the shuttered Leek American Bistro in Ballston at 801 N. Quincy Street. Executive Chef and operating partner Alan Newton describes the concept as "modern comfort food with some international flair." He said customers can expect high quality, made from scratch food in a casual setting. The restaurant expects dinner entrees will be priced at $20 or less and lunch dishes from $10-15. The bar will feature craft beers and a drink menu selected by patrons popular vote. Newton described the restaurant design as "industrial vintage with a slight touch of neoclassic twist." Unlike Leek, he said, the new restaurant will not have tablecloths. Renovations are underway inside and the owners expect to hold a grand opening event in the spring.

Minds

Ballston is home to many great minds and unfortunately we lost a very dedicated leader of the Arlington & Ballston community. Terry Holzheimer died suddenly on Saturday, March 1, 2014. He had been Director of Arlington Economic Development (AED) since March 2005.  A veteran of the department since 1996, he previously headed AED's Business Investment Group, focusing on business retention, recruitment, and economic research. He also was responsible for Arlington's small business development efforts through AED's BizLaunch Center. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting one of the organizations that Terry was passionate about. The family has selected three causes that were of particular interest: Youth Leadership Metropolitan Washington, a scholarship that has been established in Terry's name at the Arlington Community Foundation, and Bowen McCauley Dance.
