A Note from the President

Dear PPRA Members,
I love watching PPRA members interact. Senior PR pros mentor recent graduates. Fellow members assist each other at major events. And we recommend one other for job openings. I also love that we celebrate and spotlight our PPRA members at every stage of their careers.
That's right - it's PPRA awards season! It all kicks off with one of our signature events, the
Hall of Fame luncheon, during which we will honor our friend Dr. Bill Cowen. A true "triple threat," Bill is a respected practitioner, professor, and philanthropist. On May 24th, we'll celebrate his accomplishments during a fun-filled event featuring two-legged and four-legged guests!
At our Annual Meeting this spring (details to come), we will turn the spotlight on PR's rising stars. Now is your chance to nominate talented students and young professionals for the Dr. Jean Brodey Student Achievement Award and the Fast Track Award. Nominations are due May 5th.
Lastly, it's also time to nominate candidates for the 2017-18 PPRA Board of Directors. I can personally attest to how fulfilling it is to serve on the Board. Contributing to the future of PPRA is rewarding and exciting, but it's also a lot of work. I hope you will consider joining in this effort and nominating others who are eager to contribute to the success of our PPRA community.

"The NFL Draft is Coming"
This past weekend, Philadelphia welcomed the NFL Draft, a multi-day experience that was projected to deliver over $80 million in economic impact to our city. In preparation for the big event, PPRA members gathered on March 23rd to learn from
Alethia Calbeck, Director of Communications for the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, for a sneak preview and a discussion about how the #NFLDraft will positively impact Philadelphia.

Careers 101: From College to Career
On April 20th, students convened for our annual Careers 101 event where they learned from young professionals who represent various careers in the communications industry. Attendees engaged in a panel discussion and networking, and they had their resumes reviewed by a PPRA professional. PPRA is offering a "Members Only" behind-the-scenes experience at "The Q," Philadelphia's locally produced daytime program on Fox 29. Be part of the studio audience and hear from guests on a variety of topics, including music, comedy, and pop culture.
Following the taping, host Quincy Harris will meet with us and offer tips on placing guests/stories on "The Q." Register here.
On May 24th, we will induct a professional "triple threat'' into the Hall of Fame. Dr. Bill Cowen is a practitioner, professor, and philanthropist. A past president, he has been a passionate PPRA member for years, as well as owner and president of Metrospective Communications. He is the program director for the Department of Communications at Villanova and he finds time to support numerous charitable organizations in the Philadelphia region. - Annette John-Hall is now at WHYY reporting for Keystone Crossroads.
- Gabriel Escobar, former managing editor for news, is now the editor and vice president of Philadelphia Media Network. He will oversee the entire news report for the Inquirer, Daily News, and Philly.com and report directly to Stan Wischnowski.
- William K. Marimow is now Philadelphia Media Network's editor-at-large and vice president. He will serve as a lead writing and editing coach for the investigations, power and policy, and regional coverage teams of reporters, as well as a newsroom contact for the Philadelphia-based Lenfest Institute for Journalism.
- Michael Days is now Philadelphia Media Network's editor for reader engagement and vice president, becoming the public face of PMN as he meets with readers to discuss to how the organization can best serve the community.

New Positions & Hires, Clients, and Endeavors:

Kate Johnston has accepted a position as Marketing Service Line Specialist at Mercy Health System/Saint Mary Medical Center. She will be responsible for marketing planning, research, and strategy, including earned and paid media to build provider and consumer awareness and increase utilization and growth for service lines within the system.

Carole Felton Shore is working with the Department of Health and the Montgomery County Immunization Coalition, spreading the word throughout the Commonwealth of PA regarding new legislation mandating that every school-age child from K - 12 throughout the state be fully immunized by the first day of school in September.
Awards & Speaking Engagements

On April 7th, during its national annual convention, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society awarded its 2017 Board of Directors Alumni Achievement Award to Dr. Jacob Farbman, APR, New Jersey Council of County Colleges Director of Communications and The College of New Jersey public relations professor. Since Phi Theta Kappa's founding 99 years ago, and of more than three million alumni, Dr. Farbman is only the 23rd person to receive this prestigious honor.

Matt Cabrey will serve as the commencement speaker for Penn State Brandywine's spring 2017 graduation ceremony. A past PPRA president and our 2011 Hall of Fame inductee, Matt began his college career at this Delaware County campus before attending the University Park campus, where he earned a B.S. in Journalism and a minor in Sociology.

Ike Richman, VP of Public Relations, Comcast Spectacor, was the keynote speaker at the Eastern Regional Meeting of PRSSA in April on Temple's campus. He also spoke at his alma mater, The University of Maryland, on April 20th.

Gloria Hochman will be giving a keynote address at The International Conference on Bipolar Disorders on May 7th in Washington D.C. She will be discussing the making of "A Brilliant Madness," the book she co-authored with the late actor Patty Duke. Gloria will also be presenting the Stan Hochman Compassion for Kids Award to broadcaster Larry Kane, NBC10's Vai Sikahema, Jeff Gammage of
The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Irv Randolph, editor of
The Philadelphia Tribune at the National Adoption Center's Celebration of Family Wednesday on May 12th at Citizens Bank Park.
Notable Media Placements:
- Member Kerry O'Connor pitched and promoted Einstein Healthcare Network cardiology research fellow Dr. Aditi Kalla's research showing a connection between cannabis and heart failure. The story was picked up locally, nationally, and internationally by CBS3, Philly.com, Vice.com, Washington Post, Men's Health, Daily Mail, and pro-cannabis outlets such as Elevated Nation.
- According to Bill Wedo, Communications Manager at Studio Incamminati, School for Contemporary Realist Art, a four-hour Facebook Live figure-painting demonstration scored big numbers for the little art school. Dubbed "The Dream Stream: Three Artists, Three Perspectives," the event drew 10,000 views, 80,000 impressions, 4,800 Likes, Comments, and Shares, and an average watch time of one hour, 46 minutes. The five-camera production included running commentary from faculty members, who also answered online questions for viewers from 16 countries.
- Michael Kleiner and John Shiffert (Michael Kleiner PR & Web Design) had an article published in the Mid-Atlantic Society of Association Executives News Briefs and MultiBriefs: Exclusive, Top 10 Tips for Dealing with the Media.
Events, Openings, and Opportunities:
- Visit Bucks County is ramping up for National Travel & Tourism Week May 7th-13th. The Convention & Visitors Bureau will be celebrating with pop-up parties at attractions, lodging properties, and restaurants; giving away five 'Tourism Week Awards'; hosting a celebration event at the Visitor Center; hosting a free ticket raid on social media; and launching their Snapchat channel (@VisitBucksPA!).
