FUUSB Economic Justice Task Force Congregational Listening Session
Sunday, January 14, 12:30 p.m. in the Community Room

On Sunday, January 14 , FUUSB Economic Justice Task Force is holding a Congregational Listening Session in collaboration with Vermont Interfaith Action. We hope you can and will join us to share how you and your families and friends are faring in today's economy.

The headlines scream of skyrocketing stock prices, corporations sitting on mountains of cash,  and  stagnating wages and soaring housing costs, in Vermont and throughout the nation. We get a daily dose of news on healthcare cuts, tax cuts, and cuts to domestic programs, "welfare" and Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and food stamps all in the name of "reform."

But how are you doing? How is work going? Are you making ends meet? Living your dreams?

Your stories put a personal face on the policy decisions lawmakers make. On whether or not Vermont will increase the minimum wage; on whether or not we will ensure that no one loses pay or their job when they take care of their sick kids; on whether or not we will guarantee universal primary healthcare as a human right.

Vermont Interfaith Action-affiliated congregations all over Vermont are holding similar meetings; Montpelier's UU is holding one on the same day we are.

We can focus our congregation's justice work on the needs of our community if we engage with each other.   Please join and engage with us on January 14.

RSVP to [email protected] or call Gene Bergman, 598-3602 or 658-6289.  Childcare can be arranged so please let me know.

2018 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Keynote Address
The Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center announced that Academy/Emmy Award Winner Louis Gossett, Jr. will deliver the 2018 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. address. The annual event will take place  Sunday, January 14 at 3:00 p.m.  in the Sanctuary of the First Unitarian Universalist Society Meeting House.  The event is free but ticketed. There will also be a panel discussion on  Monday, January 15 at 12 p.m.  at the Fletcher Free Library, "Race, Crime and the Criminal Justice System," an examination of the disproportionate number of minorities incarcerated in Vermont.

The Society has been given a limited number of tickets to give to members for the January 14 event. These tickets will be available beginning on Sunday, January 7 in the Society Office on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are also available at the Fletcher Free Library, City Market, and the Peace & Justice Center.

Inside Islam: Film Discussion Series at FUUSB
The Sanctuary and Solidarity Task Force is sponsoring a film discussion series on Islam. This program focuses on deepening our understanding of Islam as a way to combat Islamophobia.

The two initial screenings offered in January and February examine the history of Islam and how the faith is understood and practiced by Muslims today. Each screening is paired with a group discussion structured to explore the topics of the film in more depth.

Click here for additional details including dates, times and a summary of each film. RSVP with Linda Graves at  [email protected] or ( 802) 578-8434.

Care Network Update
Please help provide some tasty cheer to FUUSB
families:
Please make a little extra dinner and share with one of the FUUSB families who need some loving support
during the cold darkness of winter. Contact Sarah Weber, Martha Molpus or any other Care Network Team
member if you know of a family who could use help.

*  Miriam (Tammy) Strauss is dealing with long-term health issues caused by being rear ended by a cattle truck.

John Lincoln had additional shoulder surgery right after Thanksgiving and his partner, Jill Stevens, also has some long-term health challenges. They welcome some assistance for several weeks as John heals. (Note:  Apologies to John for the last eNews blast in which I mixed up his last name. Thank you to Wendy Coe for catching my mistake.)

*  Elz Curtiss is caring for her partner, Lynne Matthews, and would love a meal on Mondays for herself. She is the sole caregiver for Lynne on the weekends, and so by Monday has exhausted her food stores and hasn't had time to replenish them.

*  Kathy Bonilla has been fighting a long-term health battle and she and her two granddaughters truly appreciate the help that a meal can be.

Property Team 2017 Project Wrap-Up
Hello All,

Both major projects initiated by the  FUUSB Property Team in 2017 have been completed at, or very close, to budget.

The replacement of the perimeter railing of the bell deck was completed on  July 28 by Red House Building at the proposed cost of $30,643.  The restoration and repair of the window sash within the Lantern Room of the Bell Tower was completed on  October 31  by Jeff  Fellinger  of Willard Street Traditions at a cost of $29,948, which exceeded the projected cost by approximately $1000. This overage was due to greater than anticipated repairs to the sash stiles, rails and  muntins

The Property Team and I were pleased with the work completed by all contractors involved, including Barrett's Tree Service (rigging of the bell deck rails) and  Demag
Rigging and Crane Service (rigging of the lantern sash). Personally, I was pleased beyond expectation with the quality of work and the professional manner in which it was executed by all involved.

Finally, I'd like to note that the Lantern Sash restoration project was the first project done in conjunction with the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation. As the FUUSB was a recipient of a 2017 Preservation Grant, the State of Vermont paid $14,471, virtually half of the total project cost. I'm hoping that this collaboration will continue, as our iconic and historic Meetinghouse will continue to need restoration and preservation work in the years ahead.

Best to all for a peaceful and wonderful New Year!

Facilities Manager

Christmas Eve Collection
null Christina Fulton, Director of Operations and Finance

Every Christmas Eve we give away 100% of the collection from all three services to four recipients. This year we collected a total of $7,793.13. This amount will be divided evenly between the Joint Urban Ministry Project (JUMP), Vermont Interfaith Action (VIA), our Partner Church in Transylvania, and our Discretionary Fund which serves members of our community in need. Thank you all for contributing to this annual practice of generosity; I know these recipients will be truly grateful for these gifts.
