BR-R-R-R-R-R-R!
Well, the weather outside is certainly
frightful, but we're hoping this newsletter will provide you with some interesting information and perhaps even some entertainment during this very cold, snowy and blustery time.

Stay inside and stay warm!

Oh - and Happy New Year!!
Livable Communities Trends

By Janet Sharma
Coordinator, Age-Friendly Englewood

In November I was fortunate to attend, courtesy of AARP, the 2017 Livable Communities Conference in Dallas.  During two days chock full of engaging speakers, workshops and site visits, I learned a great deal about what is going on around the country and the world that is helping to to make communities more livable for people of all ages.

Below are videos by just two of the outstanding presenters at the conference. One is about transportation, focusing on the advent of driverless cars (autonomous vehicles - or AVs).  The other is about walkability.

Robin Chase is the founder of Zipcar, which has revolutionized the car rental business in heavily populated areas through car sharing. She envisions a vastly different future in the way we will get from here to there.

Jeff Speck is  a city planner and urban designer who advocates internationally for more walkable cities.

AARP has a wealth of information about livable communities on its extensive website.    Click here to check it out!

It Takes a Village!

As many of you know who are reading this, Englewood   is a great place to live, raise a family, build friendships, engage in community activities and reap the benefits of excellent health care, cultural and commercial resources.

Many older adults in our area hope to remain comfortably in their own homes and continue to enjoy Englewood and all it offers.  What may help is developing a "village." By working together, residents can achieve the goal of establishing networks of community support and services that best serve our evolving needs.

All those who are interested in sharing ideas, concerns and information are invited to join a group of like-minded seniors for an organizational meeting:

Tuesday, January 16th
10:00 A.M.
Englewood Public Library

The goal is to develop a plan and outline strategies to make a truly Age Friendly Englewood a sustainable reality for all.

Coming Soon!

Age-Friendly Englewood is publishing a comprehensive Directory of Services for Englewood's senior adults!  We are currently compiling listings of the wide variety of low-cost, nonprofit and government services in and near Englewood.

We are also accepting advertisements from local businesses and providers of services to older adults.  If interested, respond soon as we are just about ready to go to press.

Afraid of Falling?

The Dutch Have a Solution!

The Dutch, like many elsewhere, are living longer than in previous generations, often alone. As they do, courses that teach them not only how to avoid falling, but how to fall correctly, are gaining popularity.

Bergen County is blessed to have a really fine Division of Senior Services,
