Friends of Parks and Recreation
Calligraphy Workshop

On May 21, join the South San Francisco Friends of Parks and Recreation and former White House chief calligrapher, Rick Paulus, as he gently introduces the finer details and mechanics of Engrosser's Script. Among the pointed pen hands, Engrosser's Script stands out for its elegant strength and formality; it has been used to inscribe presidential appointments for over 100 years, and is the primary script hand used in White House entertaining.

Beginning with an informative observation of a wide breadth of pointed pen style hands and the tools employed in their creation, we will then narrow our focus as we assemble our pens and put them to paper! Inspired by the Zanerian School's "Roundhand" or "Engrosser's Script", we will begin by practicing the surprisingly few basic strokes required to create a miniscule alphabet. After a series of exercises designed to familiarize the eyes and the hand to these new shapes, we will move on to majuscule letter forms and numbers, thus laying a solid foundation to developing an elegant script hand. From there, it is a mere 9,996 hours of pure calligraphic joy until mastery is achieved!

Registration for this one day event is being accepted by mail or over the counter at the Recreation Office, 33 Arroyo Dr, South San Francisco. Register early, as this is expected to fill up quickly!  Check out the event page for more information, the registration form, and a copy of the required materials list. Proceeds benefit parks and recreation programs in South San Francisco.

Thursday, May 11, 6:00 p.m. Prohibition in San Mateo County
Presented by Carmen Blair, Deputy Director,  San Mateo Historical Society (Held offsite at Armstrong Brewing CO.) In the 1930s, mobster Sam Termini called San Mateo County the most corrupt county in the state.  With rumrunners landing Canadian whiskey on isolated beaches, moonshiners operating in homes and a multitude of speakeasies, the county earned a reputation as one of the "wettest" in the state during Prohibition.  Carmen Blair, Deputy Director of the San Mateo County Historical Association, will share Prohibition stories during an illustrated presentation. This event is co-sponsored by the Armstrong Brewing Company.

Sunday, May 21, 3:00 p.m. Presentation and Discussion:  BART,  The Dramatic History of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System
The discussion will be led by Mr. Bart himself the Official Historian, Michael C. Healy, author of the book, BART: The Dramatic History of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System. This fascinating book undertakes the massive task of chronicling  something the Bay Area takes for granted. Did you know that the original BART plan included Marin and San Mateo counties? Healy does a terrific job exploring both the grand plans and the hard realities of building one of the nation's first multi-county rapid transit systems.
