Nonresidential construction activity in Pittsburgh through the first four months of 2017 has been increasing steadily, reaching $1.17 billion after building permit research for April was completed. With the heaviest months of construction still to come,Tall Timber Group predicts that the pipeline of projects bidding or under construction foreshadows the highest volume of contracting in 2017 for more than 25 years. 

Project News  

Penn State is in the midst of selections for a couple of mid-size design-build projects. The  long list of engineers and contractors has been set  for PSU's $40 million waste and water treatment plant at Main Campus. Penn State is also taking design/build proposals on a new $35 million parking garage at the Hershey Medical Center campus. PSU is seeking architects for its new $250-350 million Innovation Pavilion at Hershey and a $30 million renovation to the Willard Building at University Park.

In hospital news, Turner Construction was selected as CM for the $111 million UPMC Hamot ICU tower in Erie. UPMC also awarded Landau Building Co. the contract for the emergency dept. and OR/Peri anesthesia expansion at its Horizon Shenango campus in Farrell. Proposals are due this week for the $75-80 million St. Clair Hospital expansion.
 
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has moved the first project of the $98 million C-17 Bed-down at the 911th Airlift to the active stage. The RFP should go out before Memorial Day for the $18 million program to modernize three hangars. PJ Dick was awarded the contract for the Podium Plaza at One Oxford Centre. The $8-10 million renovation is part of Shorenstein's $50 million investment in One Oxford. Turner was selected for the $2.5 million lab fitout for Perkin Elmer at 250 Industry Drive, and started work on the foundations for the $21 million Carnegie Science Center expansion. Allegheny Construction Group also started work on the first phase of the major renovation of the Rivewalk Corporate Center and Terminal Building that McKnight Realty is developing on South Side.  Bids are taken from Burchick, Jendoco, Mascaro, MBM, Jendoco and Rycon on the 90,000 addition to Bechtel's facility at 135 Jamison Lane in Monroeville.

Gretchen is a Pittsburgh native and has over 30 years of experience serving medical, educational, and community clients. Gretchen earned her Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Cincinnati.
 
Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. announced that Michael Babusci was hired as Transportation Practice Area Leader.  In this role, he will oversee the delivery of all roadway, bridge, and traffic engineering services to clients throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Babusci previously worked as program manager for the Allegheny County Department of Public Works.  Babusci has more than 30 years of transportation engineering and management design experience.
