A message from your President...

Happy May!
A lot has been going on in the world of Health and Physical Education. Last week, members traveled to Washington D.C. for "Speak Out! Day." They were able to meet with members of Congress and network with fellow SHAPE America members in order to "speak out" in support of school health and physical education and ESSA funding.

The  Every Student Succeeds Act  (ESSA) identifies school health and physical education (HPE) as part of a student's well-rounded education. This means educators, parents and administrators all share a responsibility to provide kids with effective Health Education and Physical Education provided by trained and certified teachers. But several proposals in Congress would significantly underfund ESSA and threaten health and physical education in school. Take action by writing your representatives in Congress and asking lawmakers to fully fund Title IV, Part A grant at $1.65 billion, under ESSA. Be sure to ask four friends to join you in action!

This week is National Physical Education and Sports Week (May 1-7). Let's empower all children to lead healthy and active lives through effective health and physical education programs. Let us know what you are doing to celebrate!

Please invite ANOTHER HEALTH or PHYSICAL EDUCATION teacher to   join NJAHPERD .   Take the opportunity to extend the invitation so that they may experience the same representation and PD events you receive. REMEMBER: anyone who completes an American Heart Association JUMP o r HOOPS event receives a half price membership ($25.00).

Please take
advantage of all of our resources so we can keep our children physically active, enthusiastic and committed to making healthy lifestyle choices.

THANK YOU!
Dr. Laurie A. Cancalosi

As Advocacy Chair, I would like to thank Jackie Malaska and Lois Joyce who joined me at the 10th 2017 SHAPE America SPEAK Out! Day, in Washington DC. We were proud to represent NJAHPERD to interact with our Members of Congress to share the positive impact that school health and physical education have on our students here in New Jersey.

We met with Legislative Aides from the following Members of Congress: Senator Cory A. Booker, Representative Albio Sires, Representative Chris Smith and Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen. We dropped off "leave behind packets" with our ASKS to the offices of Senator Robert Menendez and Representative Tom Mac Arthur. All the Legislative Aides we spoke with said their Legislator SUPPORTS Physical Education and Health Education. Both Senator Booker's office and Representative Frelinghuysen's office said they will fully fund Title IV Part A in ESSA at $1.65 Billion, fully fund Title II, Part A in ESSA $2.295, fully fund Title II B in ESSA at $1.1 Billion for FY 2018 and send a letter to our state supporting Health and Physical Education in state ESSA implementation. All the other Aides we spoke with will bring it back and have a discussion with their Legislator. We will be following up with their offices within the next two weeks.

NJAHPERD would like to thank all of you who took the time out of your busy schedules and followed up with the email Action Alerts we sent you by sending a pre-written letter using SHAPE America's ACTION CENTER which you can continue to do. Or you Tweeted your Congress Person or posted on your Facebook page. Please continue to keep the pressure up by calling/e-mailing the Congressional Offices Congressional Directory as they continue to work on the Budget for 2017-2018. The more pressure we put on them as constituents the more they will pay attention to the importance of Health and Physical
Education. Remember ESSA funding was a bipartisan Congressional intent.

I have a SPECIAL ASK: NJAHPERD needs an ESSA TASK FORCE for our State Legislative Districts to keep our Federal Congressional Legislators and Senator Booker and Senator Menendez up to date on what is going on in New Jersey regarding the ESSA Federal Law and maintaining the Bi-Partisan funding that was promised for Title I, Title II and Title IV A & B.

Please contact me at [email protected] or contact the NJAHPERD office at 732-918-9999, if you are willing to serve on a Task Force to visit or call our elected members of Congress when they are back home. We need to keep the lines of communication open for our profession. We do not want to be forgotten or left out.

Thank you,

JoAnn Doherty

ESSA Updates

NJAHPERD has been keeping you informed about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) through our FYI newsletter, emails and through sessions at the recent convention. We have been attending stakeholder's meetings and voicing our concerns of the importance of health and physical education. Now it is your turn! Your voice needs to be heard so that our students receive the programs they deserve!

You need to start the discussion NOW with your administrator to ensure the your Health & Physical Education program receives funding, along with the other "well rounded education" disciplines.

School district and school administrators will make the decisions about how ESSA funding is allocated within districts and schools, and which programs are ultimately funded. They must be a key advocacy audience. Since health and physical education are NEW to the list of subjects for which funding can be used, it's likely that they will NOT receive funding at the school district and school-level unless YOU are a strong advocate.

Make time to meet with your principal and ask to be a member of your district's ESSA Committee.

Some discussion points:
·          All ESSA funding must support academic achievement for students. Remind administrators about the link between health, physical education, physical activity and academic achievement, behavior in the classroom, discipline referrals, etc.
·          Share any personal stories about how health and physical education has positively impacted students in your school.
·          Come to the meeting with a specific funding request including an estimated dollar amount for a specific curriculum, equipment, professional development event, training, etc.

If you have any questions or need more information, visit the website or contact the NJAHPERD office.

Become a Healthy U School & Receive Partner School Benefits (value: $6500)

The New Jersey State Alliance, along with The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, is in the planning process to select the next cohort of schools to participate in the Healthy U program for the 2017-18 school year. Since 2012, the school-based Healthy U program has impacted 38,000 children in 70 New Jersey schools. Healthy U is based on the CATCH curriculum; research shows that students will be healthier and perform better in school because of the program.   To implement Healthy U, the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance partners a local YMCA with their local elementary schools to develop and implement a coordinated School Health Plan.
School selection for the 2017-2018 school year begins now. 10 new schools will be selected. If your school is interested in being a part of the program, contact Sue Cornell, Healthy U Director at [email protected] to learn about the programs resources and benefits. More details

Frequent, long-term instruction in physical education not only helps adolescents be more fit but also equips them with knowledge about how regular physical activity relates to good health, research at Oregon State University shows. The findings are important for several reasons. The study was co-authored by SHAPE America members Brad Cardinal and Marita Cardinal of Western Oregon University and Charles Corbin of Arizona State University.   MORE
Catching more sleep could help student-athletes catch more touchdowns, but some still argue sports schedules are a reason against moving back the first bell.   MORE
Young athletes who specialize in an individual sport - such as gymnastics, tennis and dance - were at higher risk for overuse injuries (i.e., gradual onset of pain and symptoms), compared to those who focus on a single team sport, according to a study. Acute injuries (i.e., from a single traumatic event) were more common in young athletes whose single sport was a team sport, especially football, cheerleading and soccer. MORE
6 Things Parents Should Know About Core Stability and the Development of Movement
New research over the past 20 years has taught us that core stability is not equal to the strength of stomach or back or hip muscles. Because we now understand that core stability has as much to do with the brain as it has to do with the muscles, we no longer think of it as a strength issue. MORE
A favorite childhood pastime - swinging on the playground swing set - also may be teaching kids how to get along. The measured, synchronous movement of children on the swings can encourage preschoolers to cooperate on subsequent activities, University of Washington researchers have found.   MORE

Core Poses
You might hear a lot of talk these days about the importance of the core. "Core strength" and "core stability" are just a few of the common terms that you have probably heard at some point in your yoga and fitness journey. The interesting thing is, that for all of the dialogue, there still doesn't seem to be universal agreement about what the core is. If you read and study for long enough, you will notice the definition of "core" tends to change based on the training method that you are exploring. Depending on what your goals are, you will have different experiences of the core, some of them more helpful or effective than others. MORE

Health Education Conference

Let us know what topics you want to hear about at the NJAHPERD Health Conference scheduled in December 2017.
In 2007, a group of students distributed pink shirts in solidarity with a boy who was bullied for wearing one to school in Canada. This event - which served as the original impetus for special days dedicated to raising awareness and uniting against bullying that take place around the world - led to the United Nations official designating of May 4 as Anti-Bullying Day. Today, let's take a look at where the issue lies one decade later.   MORE
Parents' advice can support or undermine targets of school bullying-prevention programs
Children who are bystanders to a bullying incident are more likely to intervene if their parents have given them advice to intervene and less likely to intervene if their parents tell them to "stay out of it," according to a new study published in the  Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, a journal of the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. The study suggests that culturally-consistent family components may enhance and promote the success of school-based anti-bullying efforts. MORE
How often do students miss school? Are they ready for college? Are they physically fit? Is their school a welcoming place? States are beginning to outline new ways to evaluate their schools, rather than relying just on traditional measures such as test scores.   MORE

One hour of running can add seven hours to your life. A new study soon-to-be published in Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases found that overall, "runners had a 3.2 years longer life expectancy, compared with non-runners." That's factoring in sex, weight, ethnicity, race, and even lifestyle decisions such as smoking or drinking.   MORE
Short-term moderate-intensity to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) leads to modest body composition improvements in overweight and obese individuals, according to research published online recently in Obesity Reviews. Based upon 13 studies, averaging three training sessions per week for 10 weeks, the researchers found that both HIIT and MICT led to significant reductions in whole-body fat mass and waist circumference. MORE
Family structure, including regular bedtimes, mealtimes and limited screen time appear to be linked to better emotional health in preschoolers, and that might lower the chances of obesity later, a new study suggests. The study - the first to look at the connections between early childhood routines and self-regulation and their potential association with weight problems in the pre-teen years - appears in the International Journal of Obesity.   MORE

The Future Direction of Active Schools

Active Schools, an a national initiative, will not offer direct programs and services to enrolled schools because Active Schools' organizational partners do so directly.   As such, starting June 1, 2017, Active Schools will no longer provide the school improvement process that has been connected to the physical education and physical activity component of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (AHG)'s Healthy Schools Program or SHAPE America's Physical Activity Leader (PAL) Learning System.   However, AHG and SHAPE America will continue to provide these excellent resources, and Active Schools will actively promote them.

In Active Schools' role as the hub for active school environments, it will provide an enhanced website that serves as a gateway to partners' programs, training, technical assistance, research/data/fact sheets, advocacy messages and campaigns, case studies/success stories, recognition programs, and the like.   Active Schools will also continue to enroll champions for school physical education and physical activity - working to attract a broad base of champions that include parents, principals, superintendents, school board members, medical and public health professionals, etc.   Active Schools currently has over 32,000 enrolled champions.

As school physical education and physical activity experts, SHAPE America's members and affiliate state associations will continue to be critical leaders for the overall Active Schools movement and network (of partners' networks).   In the coming months, as Active Schools communicates unified messages and conducts collaborative activities, we hope that SHAPE America members and affiliates will be ready and willing to continue providing the incredible support that has been given to date.

Our nation's children deserve active school environments and active, healthy, and happy lives.  Thank you for all you do for children!
