                                                                  13th May 2017

Dear Parents,

There has been great excitement building all week for our oldest pupils - the SATs are done and they are looking forward to their residential trip to Thorness Bay on the Isle of Wight.  We hope they all have a great time and we look forward to hearing all about their adventures 'overseas' - well almost!

Thank you to all those who signed up for Grounds Day and we hope that when you come in on Monday, we will have made some headway in creating the nature trail.

The auditions for 'The Wind in the Willows' went really well and the children were well rehearsed, confident and enthusiastic.  Thank you for your help preparing them.  It has been really difficult to choose but we are announcing the cast next week; trying to be fair whilst offering as many pupils as possible an opportunity to take part.  The performances will be during the week of 26th June.  We will confirm dates and times next week as we are having to work around transition sessions for Seniors schools.

Please can I remind you of the school's policy of not bringing in toys.  We have been aware of fidget spinners in and out of the classroom - great for home but quite a distraction to learning!  Also, the amount of Pokemon cards in the playground is outnumbering the children - so again please could they stay at home!  Thank you for your support with this.

Have a good weekend

Jan Caddy
Form 6 this week
Our residential trip to Thorness Bay on the Isle of Wight has finally arrived!  Bags are packed ready for a fun packed itinerary. We will report back on our adventure!

In the remaining two days, we will be completing our 'Lost Hobbit' tale in English as well as reflecting on our residential trip, particularly through our geographical comparison of the Isle of Wight and Southampton coastline in topic.

In Maths, we are moving on to pie charts and line graphs whilst in Science we are tackling using classification keys and drawing the features of a plant accurately.

And in R.S., we are looking at how art has been expressed through a variety of different religions including Buddhism and Judaism.
Form 5 this week

Next week will be a most exciting week for the majority of Form 5 as they sail away to the Isle of Wight for our annual residential trip with Form 6. For those remaining it is business as usual.

On our return from the residential the whole class focus in Maths will be  applying our shape knowledge to take on a variety of puzzles. We will also be revisiting our previous work on area and perimeter to work out different shape problems.

In English we will be focusing on story writing. We're going to get into the nuts and bolts of putting a story together from the initial idea to the finished article.

In Science we will be investigating different forces and how they affect us. We will be planning and carrying out a number of forces' experiments to better our understanding.

Coming up in Form 1
Maths: This week the children will be looking at different ways of recording and presenting data. Form 1 will be learn how to create and use a tally chart to record results and how to transfer this information into a block graph. The children will also look at sorting different information using Venn diagrams.

English: We will be spending a final week on 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'. The children will conclude this topic by writing a poem based upon the sea and the seaside. We will be looking at a range of poetry and at recalling the key features that we use in a poem.

Science: This week we will be looking in more detail at some of the different body features that various animals have and at how these help them to survive. We will also look at how different creatures vary from us; recording a list of some similarities and differences between us.

Coming up for Form 3
This week in Maths, we will measure capacity in litres and millilitres and convert between whole or half litres and millilitres. We will measure length in metres, centimetres and millimetres, including measuring perimeters of 2D shapes. We will draw a bar chart where one square represents 2 units. We will also tell the time to the nearest minute, compare time durations and understand am and pm.

In English this week, we will start a new topic looking at adverts on TV and in magazines and how we are persuaded to buy what we see. The children will do their own piece of persuasive writing on children's toys. They will focus on describing the features of the toy and persuading you either to buy or not to buy the toy. We will make collages of the different types of toys advertised on TV's looking through magazines. Towards the end of the week they will justify their opinions & create a TV advert.

Form 3 will  do a workshop on seed dispersal as part of their trip to  Winchester Science Centre. The children will write up their final conclusions for the plant enquiries done at the start of the topic and finish the class display with a report on our trip.

We will practise improving our vocabulary using a thesaurus to find synonyms. We will learn to use a variety of different sentence openers to make our writing more interesting.

Our Maths topic this week will be addition and subtraction in the context of money. We will solve problems, including two step problems by applying the different addition and subtraction strategies that we have learned. We will use the class shop to practise adding and subtracting money mentally. The shop will have a sale with ½, 1/3 or ¾ off and may even put prices up by double!

In Science we will continue our new topic of living things and their habits. We will look in more detail at the life processes that are common to all living things. A lady called MRS GREN is going to help us remember the seven life processes!

Topic - This week we will learn about working Victorian children. We will find out about the different jobs that Victorian children would have done. We will explore why children had to work at such a young age and what their lives would have been like. We will also find out about poor Victorian children's housing and compare the conditions that these children would have lived in to the rich children.

Reception and Preschool in the coming week

In Early Years the children will read the story 'If You Plant a Seed' by Kadih Nelson.  This book reinforces kindness and the children will plant seeds of kindness in a class jar.

In Reception the children will be reading 'The Tiny Seed' by Eric Carle.  The children will be writing their own imaginative journey of a seed.  The children will be finding out more about a lifecycle of an animal of their choosing & creating a den for them using a range of construction materials.  The children will be investigating where seeds come from looking at a range of fruit and vegetables.  They will be observing, discussing and classifying seeds in a variety of ways.  In Maths we will be focusing on problem solving involving counting, addition and subtraction.

Preschool will be continuing with the lifecycle theme, by looking at books about animals and their babies.

Phonic of the week is: 'n' , 'th'

Letters and sounds focus: 'Alliteration'.

Form 4 this week
English: Form 4 will be reading and observing information texts on musical instruments where they will research a musical instrument of their own choice using books and the internet. We will be writing well organised and headed paragraphs that will include a range of complex sentences and the use of relative clauses.

In Maths Form 4 will be finding the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares. We will also find the perimeter of rectilinear shapes in cm by counting the edges too and look to efficient methods to calculate perimeter in cm and m of rectangles. Finally towards the end of the week we aim to be using co-ordinates in the first quadrant and join points to draw polygons.

Science: Pupils will be switched on this week as we create switches using drawing pins, card and a paper clip. These will be connected to a circuit with a light attached, and the light switch will be created, or a motor switch, possibly a buzzer switch too.

Topic: We will be looking at weather climates from around the world through biomes diagrams. These will help us locate where we would expect to find deserts, rainforests, polar and temperate climates to name a few, and look at the reasons why they exist there.
